2 were tips off of receivers on what should've been catches.

Another was just an insanely good break on Hamilton's part.

I'm more worried about our receivers dropping sh*t.

No

They were confirmed over throws by one person present.

Freeman called two of them "gifts" that bounced off receiver's hands.

Look on the positive side. Whether tipped balls over overthrows, Hamilton didn't drop them!

Does he move well enough to play nickel this year? Then start at safety next year obviously.

I was kind of hoping Tariq Bracy or KJ Wallace would lock down the nickel if Crawford lost a step. I was hoping we'd keep Hamilton at his best position - safety. 6'4" is awfully tall to play nickel.

Then again, it sounds like the coaches are considering keeping JOK on the field as he wouldn't be a liability in coverage. So many options...

Tim, Tim and Pete on the 247 podcast raved about him today. Said they haven't seen a player with his athletic ability since Jaylon Smith. Said they haven't seen any safety at practices make plays that he was making. The hype train is real on this dude.

Understand what you are saying about keeping Hamilton at safety. But, as long as Eliot and Gilman are healthy he won’t see the field unless it’s mop up duty. If he has th ability to play nickel and he is your best option then you start him at nickle and as the backup safety. If he is the best option at corner opposite Pride and you kick Crawford, Bracy, Houston, etc inside to nickel to get your best unit on the field then you do that. Again I have no idea if he has the movement skills to play nickel or corner. I’m just sayin if he is the best option at those positions you play him and he backups at safety. I think that is better then sitting on the bench all season and paying special teams.

Yeah, get all three on the field and keep Crawford with the CBs so the team doesn’t have to scramble for a replacement if he gets hurt.

If he's that good, he'll play at safety. They will sub more than they did last year because last year they didn't have enough quality and/or experienced depth to take Elliott or Gilman off the field. Look at the CFP, Gilman was hurt and he stayed on the field because there wasn't anyone nearly as good to come in for him.

But I agree if he's good enough to play CB or is the best nickel available, you play him wherever he can help the team the most.

Best idea I heard was on the II podcast. Bring Hamilton in when in nickle at safety and move Elliot to the nickle spot. I like the idea of getting Crawford, Hamilton, Gilman, Elliot, Pride all on in nickle. So many ball hawks and playmakers in that secondary.

I'm down with that.

At the end of the day, I want the best configuration out there. Whether or not each is at their primary position in that configuration is not important.

Yeah, exactly. Hamilton stays at safety and you move someone else built to play the nickel spot. Then leave your two most athletic LBs on the field (guessing JOK and Lamb) and you've got a whole lot of athleticism on passing downs.

They subbed quite a bit at both safety spots last year, and that was when they didn't really have great answers for backing up Gilman and Elliott. Hamilton will get plenty of time if they leave him on the back end.

I'm down for this if he's up to the task immediately, but I also wouldn't mind seeing him get the Shumate treatement and playing exclusively as the top nickel, where he's got help all around him in the event that he makes rookie mistakes.

I get nervous about the prospect of a true freshman being responsible for the deep part of the field, regardless of how well he's adjusting and making plays in practice lol.

I will say, though, that NorthDakota's observation on 'configuration' is interesting. More than a couple of the ND beat guys and bloggers have noted that ND seems to be trying to go to a positionless secondary, between the safeties and the nickel. You obviously can't do that with your corners, but if you eliminate the difference between 'field' and 'boundary' safety, and have three guys that can all rotate from safety-safety-nickel, that makes it much harder for the offense to key on an area, and makes it easier/quicker for ND to get lined up and take care of responsibilities.

I brought this up months ago and Lucky and others called me crazy.

Ha, didn’t call you crazy at all. Just noted that it seemed very cavalier to say “why doesn’t he just come in and start, from day 1, at Nickel.”

Had nothing to do with the position. In fact, I agreed with that notion. It had more to do with handing the keys to a position for a prospect that wasn’t even on campus at the time, seemed rather aggressive. And considering he’s not playing Nickel right now, seems like, at least initially, the staff likes other options better as well.

Read that he may start taking snaps at QB if BK wants him on offensive side of the ball.
