Dad pulled the old 8th grade twice trick to get his son physically mature enough for freshman year in the Trinity League. Mater Dei, Bosco and Santa Margarita all had upperclassmen QB's in '14... Lowray at Mater Dei (Mizzou) Rosen and Costello (Jr) at Bosco and SMC. Doing 8th grade twice opens up Mater Dei and Bosco for him to come in as a 9th grader and start right away.

Crappy parenting IMO. Letting sports dictate when to move on to high school just puts the wrong message in the kid's ear. I'm actually glad that in PA now they start your eligibility clock in 7th grade. You only get 4 years of varsity, but you only have 6 years to finish school. Stops those 8th grade redshirts.

Yeah, I can't imagine holding my son back and making him repeat 8th grade with a bunch of kids less mature than him just to get him an extra year as a starter.

I get that it's a "business" decision, but would Daniels be any less heralded had he enrolled when he was supposed to and sat behind another QB for a year? Not only are you banking on your son being the star that you think he is, but you're also banking on those other QB's living up to the hype.

And even if it all goes as you thought it would, would JT really have been less heralded if he were part of the '18 class in the first place, to which he may now try to reclassify anyway?

Just seems icky or something, idk.

Step 1: Birth greatness
Step II: Start kindergarten a year late, i.e. "What a big 5 year old you have!"
Step C: Profit!

College is expensive, if it pays for school...

It has been demonstrated, apparently by NHL hockey statistics, that getting held back a year provides a significant advantage in sports. Lots of kids get held back, most just much earlier.

I don't have a problem with people deciding to start their kids in kindergarten a year late.

Holding a kid back in 8th grade is just weird to me, though. Totally different situation in terms of development and relation to peers.

I'm pretty sure South Carolina's QB reclassified... he went from being a potential EE to enrolling a full year early. Skipped his senior year.

Jake Bentley

Kind of weird, though, because he's 20 years old... that means he would have been a 19-year-old senior in high school the last half of '16, had he stayed. Some states have rules that say kids over 18 can't play varsity sports, I think, so maybe that fueled his track to graduate early.

Jake was one of those that had an extra year in middle school. One of the major factors in him reclassifying was the he was going to have to move and he wouldn't have played on the team he had spent the last couple of years with. His dad is a coach and got a job on Muschamp's staff as the RB coach. Oh, and it actually made sense for his dad to get on the USC staff as he was with Muschamp at Auburn and before that he was an extremely successful HS coach in South Carolina.

I remember that study and I'm pretty sure it said the opposite. Unless there were two studies with two different conclusions.

I was thinking Tipping Point, but it may be other places! It's pretty obvious, though, even without the stats. Like most kids, I was a whole lot more athletic than the year before every year between 8-18.

That's true, but you can't believe all the reasons people in the educational system give. The fact is, lots of kids get held back early in anticipation of this very situation, whether it is good for the kid in other ways or not. Just like some kids get medicated for the academic advantages, whether it is really "good" or "necessary" for them in the big picture or not.

Is reclassifying to 2018<strike> and EEing.</strike> **just read Biggins' story saying he'll enroll in the fall.

SC is such a joke as an educational institution. Kid decides mid year of Jr. year that he wants to enroll after just 3 years of HS. And were not talking Sheldon Cooper here either folks. I originally read he was enrolling in the Spring so that would have been worse but still, how do you call yourself a Top 30 university and admit average HS students after just 3 years and juco's who two years ago were too dumb to play at Idaho?

Moving on:

247 only rated him a 4 star and ranked him the #4 QB / #29 OA / #2 CA behind Tanner McKee.

Mods will want to move this into the 2018 section.

If you think I'd even mention a preference for a Cali prospect over a Catholic QB from Western PA you've been in the Whatcha Drinkin? thread too long. 3.5 seconds after I clicked submit, Lax would banhammer me so hard my screen would crack.

Phil is the best HS player in the country for ND regardless of position or class.

Lol he’s a 4.0 student that didn’t even get held back (he’s 17 right now).

He looks like he'll fit right in at SC. Spoiled children everywhere in So. Cal. must be prepping their douche after this announcement.

me9rob is a scrub.

I know you're gonna lurk and read this so let me lay it out for you. The school you like is a SHAM. They take juco guys that couldn't get into Cal State - Crapahola without two years in juco. And the reason they went juco in the first place? Because they weren't & aren't DI material unless they get their turd transcripts polished at GED Community College.

You wanna troll your rival's boards? stick to Wazzu or Oregon St. This site's way above your pay grade.

"Lol he’s a 4.0 student that didn’t even get held back (he’s 17 right now)" Really bro?

1. He got held back in middle school. He was in 8th grade when he announced (sorry "Committed" to Mater Dei) that was his last year with the IE Ducks. So basically he took 8th twice while he traveled around the country playing for his Dad and the IE Ducks.
The next year ('15) he was a freshman at Mater Dei. I lived in Laguna then, and saw him play live as a Freshman. So he's only been in HS for 2.5 years and will graduate in 3 yrs.

2. "He's only 17" - Hey Einstein, when you're a Sr. in HS, you're supposed to be 17 turning 18. His problem was he was 15 turning 16 his first year of HS instead of 14 --> 15 like 99% of kids.

Here's the proof.

8th grade from Dec-'14.

wow that's huge for USC. could legitimately win the job and take over for Darnold.

He's not going to be a big-time NFL prospect like Josh Rosen is or Trevor Lawrence will be, he doesn't have that sort of proto-type size plus the incredible arm talent, but he's about as polished as it gets for a HS QB.

He's more in the Matt Barkley or Jimmy Clausen mold, he'll more than likely be a great college player but he lacks the physical size/physical tools to be a #1 draft pick.

Nope. If any guy is going to be Drew Brees 2.0, it's this guy. And he's supposedly 6-2 in cleats. Will he be the #1 NFL pick over Trevor Lawrence? I wouldn't bet on that. Trevor Lawrence won't hit his stride until he gets to the league.

Don't sell Daniel's arm short either

The short QB stigma is wearing off. Lil Aaron Rodgers and his juco azz is doing just fine.

Just a PIAA rule. You play a varsity sport or enter 9th grade your 4 year clock starts.

Sorry. Late response

Not sure about wrestling.
I do know a kid my son went to school with was a very good wrestler. When he was recruited/slash following his club coach he played the 8th grade game so he graduates this year instead of last year.

Sorry but I'd take Phil over this kid any day of the week.

I agree. I'm "all in" with Phil... he's a great kid and exceptional athlete. I can't help but think a lot of the anger/narrative is in the speculation of ASB's commitment to USC as a result of JT's.

Would love to see Phil throw bombs to ASB but that train appears to be leaving the station. Regardless, I think we are in a great place and the staff has done an exceptional job with the 2018 recruits. Merry Christmas and Cheers to all!
