Love Quinn and Clausen. This is what I'll always remember:

Quinn put his team on his back and ran in the go ahead TD against USC in '05 himself.
Clausen tried to do the same against Navy in '09 and fumbled at the 1, eventually losing to Navy for the 2nd time since the 43 game streak was broken.
Quinn found ways to win against some tough teams and didn't lose any he shouldn't. Clausen lost to Air Force, Pittsburgh, BC, Syracuse, Navy, Pitt again, and friggin' Conneticut who was starting our former backup Frazier.

Both put up monster stats, but I'll take Quinn over Clausen every time.

If ND gets to a BCS game in 2009, Clausen is a heisman finalist.
23-30, 340 yds, and 5 TD's against Stanford to end the season and we lost. The defense gave up 18 points in the 4th Quarter. I'll never forget that game.

The end to that season losing to Navy, Pitt, UConn, and Stanford and feeling like we couldn't stop a JV HS team from scoring was so damn depressing. Just felt like ultimate rock bottom.

Are we forgetting about Clausen? If we’re looking at single season, I’d put Clausen’s junior year up against any ND QB.
Early that season, my buddies who aren’t ND fans were acknowledging that Clausen was playing his way to be a finalist for the Heisman. Then the losses just piled up. That SC game was a heartbreaker. They were finally competing w/ Poodle’s Trojans but spit the bit at the end. Still remember that hit that Robby Parris took after making a 1st down reception where his helmet was knocked off. And then Duval Kamara at the goal line…

I wouldn't want Sam to be like Joe. Joe kinda put up pedestrian numbers in college. I mean, after one game Sam already has more than 1/3 of the 11 TDs that Joe scored in his best year. How about best QB since Quinn?
All Joe did was win. 😉

Not all of that is Clausen’s fault. Charlie had a lot of internal bickering on his defensive staff that permeated throughout the team.

Once he matured a little, Clausen was a ballplayer. The fact that those teams sucked on defense and didn’t have the conditioning or character to close out wins was not at all on him. He gave what he had.

God that 2009 UConn game was just abysmal. One of the low points of my life as a Notre Dale fan and considering I was a student in the Davie years that’s saying something.

It's almost as if people are surprised he's good. Feels like a lot of ND people as well as national media types are figuring out Hartman is a lot better than they thought?

Let’s be real. No one watches Wake football but we know the ND scouting department does.

I think there’s a couple reasons for this.

1.) Irish fans, and media, have been so accustomed to QB play has been mostly mediocre. Ian Book had some great moments, but it was evident that his ceiling wasn’t a national championship. Coan had his moments as well, but his lack of mobility angered some fans. Now, here comes Sam Hartman. He has an ability that we really haven’t seen since Clausen.

2.) Hartman is part of a much better roster, compared to what he had at WF. Pretty much across the board. Hartman won’t be asked to throw the ball 40 times. He has a great running game to rely on and he has a defense that will not get Notre Dame in a shootout.

Combine these two, and I think this is why some people are caught off guard. A top 10 QB joined a very good roster/team that hasn’t seen this QB play since 2009.

On Pete’s podcast Sunday, he said Notre Dame will have a “puncher’s chance” against the big 3 if Hartman plays like this. No, Notre Dame had a puncher’s chance with Pyne under center. With Hartman, they might win one or two of those games by 10+.

Since Clausen, I watched every ND offensive possession with the nervous anticipation waiting for something, anything, to go wrong. That was the expectation. Good execution and points were the surprise, not the norm. About halfway through the 2nd quarter last Saturday, my internal voice started to change to be, "holy crap, this is what a competent QB looks like." I'm sure Hartman will have his bonehead moments, we all do. But I hope I can completely let go of the feeling that no matter who we play, points won't just be luck of mediocre defenses but rather, our offense is just better than their defense by a mile. Would be nice, for this year anyway.

Someone had bagged on Hartman's arm strength being his reason for less hype. I would suggest what we are seeing is "touch" which is a foreign concept to ND fans. Dude throws a catchable ball - the NFL get's boners over power arms that wash out every year. Tom Brady says "hi."

The dude is having himself a very good time. It's got to be so much more fun doing this than being the third-string/scout team QB for some grim-ass NFL team. He's a walking advertisement for staying in school and playing for a program like Notre Dame.

I didn’t remember the clip from watching the game and presumed it was from garbage time or something but naw it’s Angeli’s first meaningful snap of his career and Sam’s there doing that in the sidelines lol
