I was not around back then but the fact that he was third string to start the 1977 season after he was injured the previous season seems to be an error in judgment by the coaches rather than a Joe Montana (arguably best QB of all time) problem, no?

Could be the others showed much better in practice which is why he was third string. After the third comeback, I'm guessing the coaches finally realized that he was a much better game player than he was a practice player?

Of course if Montana were playing today he’d probably have transferred to BC after two years on the bench and no clear path to playing time.

SIAP, or if I'm just ignorant on the topic/don't fully understand the transfer process, but why wouldn't BK block, or attempt to block, PJ going to BC? Knowing it is highly likely he will be playing against us in 2022, as it is his fifth year of eligibility, why would he let it happen?

IIRC, didn't he block Golsen from a potential Texas transfer since we played them the following year?

I have three theories.
1. 2022 is so far down the road he just doesn't care, doesn't want the headache.
2. He respects and cares about PJ enough that he just wants the kid to be happy and if that's BC, go ahead.
3. BK things so little of PJ and his abilities he could care less about potentially facing him in a few years. PJ won't be worthy to tie Buchner's shoelaces.

Am I over thinking this whole thing? Just seems odd we would allow a kid to transfer to a future opponent when he will still have eligibility.

I think more of #2 and #3. Plus he wants to be able to say he let the guy go where his GF goes to school at. Less PR problems.

Players no longer need permission from their existing school to transfer to a new school.

Thanks for the info. When did that happen? I remember the debate surrounding Golson and just assumed that was still in place.

So hypothetically, Dylan McCaffrey could announce a transfer to OSU, and scUM could do nothing to prevent it?

The portal was created to replace the old system where schools would have to ask permission to talk to a player under scholarship. Now the player entering the portal gives schools the clearance to communicate directly with them.

EDIT: As to McCaffrey, some conferences do have rules that prohibit TAKING a transfer from another member institution. So UM can't block McCaffrey but maybe the B1G keeps OSU from pulling him over. Since ND is on an island there's no rules preventing anyone from taking ND players.

It’s also just kind of a scuzzy thing to do generally, blocking a kid’s transfer.
Maybe if a serious player is jumping to your rival (tho Navy let Gilman come to ND). It might be worth the trouble and PR hit. But in this case it’d just look petty to keep a backup QB from going to BC because we play them in a couple years.

This is the interesting part. Navy and Ken N. would not endorse Alohi's waiver request for immediate eligibility. That's part of the reason why the NCAA denied it and he had to sit a year.

It will be interesting to see if ND supports PJ. If they endorse his waiver request then he may be immediately eligible at BC. I believe the other high profile transfers (Fields to OSU and Martell to UM) had the prior institution support whereas the ones who did not were not granted eligibility.

My thought: If we see PJ get immediate eligibility then it's #2 for sure - at the very least ND and Coach BK would have to support the transfer. The converse is not true - nothing else can be for ascertained definitely because the NCAA or other parties may intervene.

I think everyone agrees that BK should get credit for getting 4 star production from 3 star talents.

What many of us are frustrated with is the inability to get elite production from the elite talents. It's in a large part what holds us back from being a consistent playoff contender and championship caliber team.

im not disagreeing that our lack of elite QB play has been the big difference for a few seasons for BK/ND. The other years I dont know if it would made much difference, although it always hides some flaws.

I just wonder did the services/BK miss on their evaluations of some of those guys more than not developing them. I think we can all agree Wimbush wasn't actually the #5 prospect.

QB is the hardest position to evaluate. Look how many NFL teams miss and they have fully grown men with years of college film.

My biggest concern with him going to an opponent is not so much having to play against him as it is him giving up the secret sauce. Then again, all indications are he had no idea what the recipe was...

I’ve often thought about this and the possible impact. I would think the opposing teams can see every play the offense has run over any period of time they’d like. And the numbers can breakdown tendencies. So, it’s not like that information is hard to come by. However, the more time a defense has the more structural change they can prepare for even if it’s one game.

All this talk of recruiting and developing ELITE level QBs got me thinking about the NFL and where the best QBs played their college ball. It's quite interesting actually.
The powerhouse programs, the ones we as ND fans aspire to become, do not have a lot of QBs on this list. Clemson is the most interesting one in having Watson and then following that up with future NFL player Lawrence. That's the gold standard for back to back players. Other than that I am not sure who I would look at on this list and be envious of their QBs. Obviously Oklahoma, but that is a whole different story.

Recruiting, evaluating, and developing QBs is hard...

would be interesting to see their individual recruiting rankings, overall average recruiting ranking or bell curve.

I just mentioned this in previous post here - Not an easy position to evaluate and predict development.

One nitpick up front, Clemson didn't go back to back with Watson/Lawrence. Kelly Bryant was in between but I get your point.

As for the list, it illustrates one of my favorite points and that is... FCS (and below) put more QB's into the league than the mighty SEC. Great Twitter ammo as is LSU's inability to win a NC with an "SEC" QB. They've done it with kids from Ohio, Indiana and Texas.

My beef with ND in the BK era is when they do get an elite HS QB, they get little to nothing out of them. OF the 4 elite QB's BK's had his hands on, he got a season's worth of starts out of Wimbush. Would NFL success by ND QB's help? Yes. Look at OU. But I'd rather have OSU's QB room of Miller, Barrett & Jones regardless wht they were ranked and what they did/didn't do in the NFL.

so if BK can get a lot out of the "not elite" HS QB's he recruits but not the "elite" ones what does that mean?

Were the evaluations of those being "elite" wrong?
Do "elite" HS QB's not take to BK's coaching?
Sheer bad luck that the "elite" HS qb's that ND signed turned out to already hit their peak developmentally?
something else?

Just seems to me that the way he has maximized some of the qb play he has that its almost not solely Kelly's fault those "elite" ones havent worked out. But maybe I'm looking at it wrong?

QB rooms of Miller, Barrett and Cardale followed by Barrett, Burrow and Haskins. Real fair.

I'm gonna go throw a tantrum.

I think Kelly's 20+ years as a head coach prior to ND was huge in preparing him for the job. The one negative on Kelly's resume (IMO) was never having coached in any capacity at a big time school. I always wonder if his lack of experience with really high end talent (and egos) hurt his ability with elite kids. Seemed like many flamed out early in his tenure and then he just stopped recruiting that type of kid. Who knows.

What does he expect playing behind a starter who has had back to back 11 win seasons? I’m confident enough in the coaches that they would’ve played the better player and that is Book.

https://www.si.com/college/bostonco...art-quarterback-emmett-morehead-phil-jurkovec

Jurkovec, the transfer from Notre Dame, looks to be the primary signal caller moving forward. If he receives his waiver this year that will allow him to play immediately, he will have three years of eligibility for the Eagles and would most likely be the starter through the 2022 season. However, if his waiver is denied, he would have to sit out 2020, which would lose a year of eligibility and Hafley would only have him for two years. His waiver is clearly a big deal. There is a lot of excitement around Jurkovec, as he appears to be one of the most well rounded, dynamic and explosive quarterbacks Boston College has had in over a decade.

If Jurkovec's waiver is denied, that leaves a big question mark at a key position for this upcoming season. Would Hafley stick with Grosel, the starter for the majority of the 2019 season? Or is there another quarterback on the roster that would be a better fit for the new offense? Without a spring game this year, it's hard to evaluate what they might be considering there.
