Reading between the lines, it seems like the staff is "Lamb or Bust" at LB (not counting Simon, he's in regardless).

I wonder if they revisit that with McGrone balling out against the best lol.

Not sure how much stock they put in these camps when it comes to recruiting players.

Probably zero, compared to their own film evals, in-person evals, and development projections.

But they didn't get a great look at McGrone in person, considering II was his first action post-injury, and he suddenly looks really good going downhill against really good RB's.

We're good with Ovi and Bo, especially if they get Simon as a Rover and Lamb to play whatever they need. There's just not much room to push for both Lamb AND McGrone, and that kind of sucks.

LB depth after this year isn't great. Ovi and Bo are nice additions and it seems like ND will land Simon, but it would be nice to land one more solid LB in this class. If we lost out on McGrone but got Lamb, that would still be a great LB class.

Probably. Recruiting sites put way too much stock in football in shorts.

Everyone in the country plays different competition, in different systems, with different coaches, with/without sped up film.

The Opening is the best way I can think of in comparing apples to apples for top tier athletes who aren't OL, and probably DL to a degree.

Let's not be bitter just because Michigan is getting another stud. If Franklin got a bump we'd be saying 'about time!'.

Wiltfong & Loy with the CB for Crusader to be McGrone's PR director in 4 years.

Better than Gant?

Who da thunk it?

I sense a little Wiltfong / Home market cooking and a lot of click bait opportunities with this move coupled with an ND v. Michigan battle and Columbus still on the sidelines just 175 miles away.

Agreed. Top 50 recruit deciding between regional powers sells better.

No. The best way to gauge how good a recruit is is at an All-American game. 40 yard dashes and 7on7 tournaments don't mean anything. I mean, when you're wearing shorts and don't have to worry about getting your head knocked off of course you're gonna look good.

Even if, they haven't happened yet.

So if you had to watch game film of a player in Wisconsin, and a player in California and decided which to offer by end of day, would you take that scenario? Or would you rather evaluate in person, over 3 days head to head competition at the Opening?

Give me the opening all day for anyone not an OL.

The Opening isn't the best place to evaluate because they're not playing football that weekend. I realized The Opening was flawed when Tori Hunter won The Opening MVP and then went on to have a mediocre at best college career.

If you're gonna adjust a kid's ranking off of The Opening, that's fine. But no kid I'd worth a 140 spot jump just because they looked good in shorts

He broke his leg... Positions that require speed don't always come back well from that. Here's to praying for Javon McKinley.

Tori Hunter was a stud in college. He was a low 4-star recruit, and was my pick to be the sleeper of the class (probably only Whiskey remembers this). I thought he'd be great in college, and I think the broken leg slowed him down.

Especially one Wiltfong can swing by, pick up and do daily updates on.

I predict 4 CB changes at the minimum.
I agree with you and Lax. Let's be honest these sites are setup to make money. Probably the most fair evaluater is Tom Lemming, but he is getting old school now and a bit of of touch.

But, to move up 197 spots to top 50 overall due to a performance in shorts is crazy. Especially for a kid who is only 6'1" at LB.

And Koon I think at these camps LB is the worst position to evaluate beside RB. LB's need to know how to tackle and most importantly read keys. The only thing you can determine at these camps for LB's is if they are athletic and can cover. Which will make an undersized player like Cam shine. I mean our safety commit is bigger than Cam.

McGrone's not undersized. 6-1.5, 214 is good size going into his senior season. He'll show up to college camp at 230ish.

Allen is 6-2, 211. He's roughly the same size. Allen's just the King Kong Bundy of safeties.

I agree that being 6-1.5, 214 is very good size for highschool LB with speed going into his senior year.

The question is whether he is actually that size. Most kids tend to shrink when they arrive on campus.

He's obviously big enough that both ND and UM want him.

I hear that. But no way anyone should get moved up 197 spots based on a camp performance.

That's what he measured in at the Opening. They seem to be as pretty honest

or maybe he was completely undervalued and his knee injury kept him undervalued. His film is as good as it gets.

I just love that he's ranked higher than Gant now so I can dig up some... "are you crazy" comments about me liking McGrone as much or more than Gant.

I do think he was underrated. But IMO he is not a top 50 player, while Allen sits at like 75.

I honestly don't really give a damn where these guys are rated. Yes, top players help us get to where we want to go, but nobody has been given a National Championship based on their recruiting rankings.

Bluntly, this is naive. There's a reason Alabama is so dominant and it's their, what, 8 out of 10 number one finishes in the past ten years?

Sometimes recruiting rankings fail you, and you get a bust. But when you're consistently pulling in 5 stars (a la Ohio State and Alabama) and you have elite athletes willing to sit on the bench, you can sub them in and process out the rest.

Agreed.

We all know, and have known, that McGrone is a stud. Elko and Lea know it. They're all over him and have been since before he was highly rated. Let the process play out. I don't believe ND is out of it at all. He just also happens to like Michigan. And to be honest...anyone without a bias against them would like what Harbaugh can pitch right now. The kid was excited by the Michigan offer just like he was excited about the ND offer. It's understandable and he's taking his time with a decision. That's all you can ask and ND is right in the thick of things. If he were as sure as some of you guys are about where he wants to go then he'd be committed already.

In reality, a lot of mega-teams like Alabama and Clemson don't win their first NC after the run of top-rated classes, it comes the other way around.
