The thing that always just killed me about Max was how horrible his instincts were. He was out of position and late on everything... or if he wasn't late, he was so early in run support that it became obvious he was just guessing and not playing the position correctly.

With his gifts, he should've had 6+ interceptions a year as a FS. No ball skills, always out of position. Top 5 most disappointing recruit for me.

The guy was basically uncoachable IMO.

Sampson said Allen's dad was decked out in ND gear at the Opening and says Allen is solid to ND. He also knows CB Tre Burton from the Atlanta area and Burton will visit end of month. Very good chance we land this kid. Now ranked as 7th best corner in Georgia and living here in GA. if you're getting the 7th best corner in this state you're getting a very good player.

ISD's Jamie watched Allen at the Opening, and said he did well enough to not hurt his stock, but he didn't move up for him, and that he wasn't very smooth out of transitions.

He needs to stop growing.

Haha! Rover.

The thing I never understand about football is why they train everyone up to their max weight. It makes sense if you are an OLinemen, or a DT, but what's the deal with safeties/WR/LBs etc.?

Tranquill is a great example. We started talking about him as too big and stiff for safety. He weighed like 225. Only in football would anyone ever be confused about why a 6'1" kid who weighed 225 lbs was having agility and injury issues.

The whole world struggles to put on lean muscle. It doesn't happen by accident. Football players have a specially created environment for doing just that. Tranquil is not 225 lbs. by doing lots of push-ups. Kawhi Leonard weighs that much at 6'7", and he is still very strong.

Why not concentrate a little more on speed? And less on heavy squats? Why not craft a training regimen that keeps your safeties a little lighter?

Because there are drills to help with speed and they're getting better in the refinement of the technique. People complained after the NC beat down from Bama saying how unathletic and weak our kids looked while playing the Crimson Tide. I will agree that there has to be a balance, but he's only still in HS, and there's plenty of time to work on his agility, especially as he's still growing.

I'm not talking about every player at every position. I'm wondering why they let certain skill players grow past their position profiles ("Depending on how he runs with that weight, he may be better suited for LB," or "He might grow into a DE or TE").

It makes sense if the bigger position is harder to recruit and you need bodies, like a DE, but it doesn't make sense to me when you have a fast safety who becomes an undersized LB (rover is one answer), or a fast LB who becomes a space eater.

But there is no need to compare to Alabama. When you are recruiting all Top 100 players, you get the VERY RARE kids who can actually run around comfortably with all that weight. Most kids either end up slowing down or getting injured.

How does this relate to Derrik Allen?

Just curious, not being snarky.

I'm also seeing what Lax is seeing. It looks like Mr. Allen is going to lift his way to linebacker size.

It made me wonder aloud why people treat those kind of transformations as inevitable.

Or maybe just have a Kam Chancellor back there?

ND likes where he is at physically and ballis is just having him working on maintaining his weight doing higher reps...allen mentioned this in an article

I don't remember where exactly, but I thought one of the recruiting services talked to Derrik about his expectations for the S&C program at ND and he said that he did not expect to come in and add weight, but rather that his body composition would be changed / improved, so I don't consider it inevitable that he gains much weight/if any at ND.

Also see Pand above.

much like the plan Daelin Hayes is most likely working off. There are a few other guys in the same boat i bet, Jamir Jones for one.

I haven't seen his work out schedule so I can't comment on that but it could simply be genetics. We can't forget, he was a Top 3 cornerback when the first R&R's came out. Then he was a top FS, next stop logically will be SS if he "out grows" FS. A SS with former Top rated CB skills would be awesome if you're FS is doing his part.

it's been noted too by the folks on the II podcast that Allen is not cut like a Kevin Austin type. He has a lot of toning up to do. I know muscle is heavier than fat but it should be a good transformation and help him get more explosive

However, he’s already started to get into not only Elko’s scheme, but also the training program of Matt Balis.
Notre Dame’s intention for Allen isn’t to get him much bigger than his current size, but instead to reshape what’s already there. In other words, the player who made that one-handed interception might end up getting more athletic than he already is.
“(Balis) already told me about my program,” Allen said. “Lots of high intensity reps, Maintaining weight, not going up, getting more cut up, more built. I like the
workouts.”

People really lack reading skills Pandfan. We've discussed this very thing on page 8. You and I both.
