247Sports and Irish Illustrated reported earlier this week that running backs coach Autry Denson was heading to Tampa, Fla., for an in-school and in-home visit with Berkeley Prep five-star offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere. With the hiring now official, we’re now told that Quinn will join Denson today in Florida, as they look to make a big push toward landing the 6-6, 272-pounder.

While this will be the first recruiting visit between Quinn and Petit-Frere in Florida, it won’t be the first time they met. The two spoke at length during Petit-Frere’s two trips to Notre Dame, so there is already familiarity between both sides at this point.

You can tell instantly that Quinn is a very charismatic guy.

Sounds like ND is still very much in this, and his mother sees the value in ND's academics compared to the rest. Bama might be fading.

No hopes here but if he does join this class, I think most people's fears are greatly reduced regarding the future of the OL.

In fact, if we do land NPF and Brown, I'd have to call this the most complete class top to bottom I've seen in the Kelly era.

Only missing a dominant DE which are hard to come by.

ISD says we are still very much in it and people suddenly are giddy. Nothing at all has changed in his recruitment. We were very much in it a year ago, 6 months ago, a month ago. The problem is that Michigan, Bama, Florida and pOSU are still very much in it as well.

While losing HH probably hurt to a certain degree, ND was still going to be strongly considered given the high academic kid that he is and the quality OL program that we have.

This kid appears to be very thoughtful but gives absolutely nothing away. Not even his high school coach has any idea what direction NPF is leaning. Wiltfong repeatedly marvels at how he handles the media questions without giving anything up.

Some interesting info from 247's Ohio State guy Bill Greene, who has a 90+% accuracy rating and switched his CB from Alabama to foggy:

I know Alabama thinks they have this kid, and the majority of the 247Sports Crystal Ball forecasts are for Florida, but from what I'm told today from a great source I would not count out Notre Dame or Ohio State. I have removed my Crystal Ball off Alabama, and switched it to "foggy" right now, but I won't stay at foggy the closer we get to National Signing Day. Academics will play a huge role here, and that keeps Notre dame right in the mix, even with the loss of Harry Hiestand to the NFL. Ohio State has a great connection to Petit-Frere through Greg Schiano from when he lived in the area, so the Buckeyes are in this one I was told. Add in the fact that last weekend's official visit to Florida was not anything special, and the door is open for the Buckeyes to pull this one of the fire late in the process. I was told today that Bama is out, and they were always window dressing for this kid. Petit-Frere's head coach trusts Schiano explicitly, and this relationship can only help Ohio State land this big fish in the end. I will track this one throughout the weekend and all of next week, but make no mistake: Ohio State is in this one.

Accounting for some understandable pro-Ohio State spin, and that sounds pretty positive for us overall.

It always amazes me how schools perceive their recruiting strengths:

ND: B/c smart kids like us!
Bama: B/c we win titles!
Florida: B/c he’s local!
OSU: B/c our DC is buds with his coach!

Like, nothing from OSU about what might be best for NPF, just a string of adults who are going to steer this kid there.

Urban Meyer likes to wait for last, listen to what the kid says he wants throughout, and then craft his sales pitch accordingly. I bet the NFL kids get the "I'm not here for school" presentation, the academic kids get something completely different.

NPF and his mom will be convinced that Ohio State is Princeton by the end of the trip.

in 2016, after two seasons coaching Berkeley Preparatory School and sending two players to Davidson College in North Carolina, Schiano was hired by head coach Urban Meyer to serve as defensive coordinator/associate head coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes football program, replacing Chris Ash who, coincidentally, left Ohio State to accept the head coaching position at Rutgers.

Greg Schiano ended up staying on Ohio State’s coaching staff after a bizarre debacle with Tennessee that ended up with the Vols pulling their offer for the Buckeyes assistant to be their head coach.

But there’s no guarantee Schiano will be on Urban Meyer’s staff next season. There is “a lot of interest” surrounding Schiano for NFL defensive coordinator positions, according to FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman.

Schiano has been the Buckeyes’ defensive coordinator/assistant head coach in both of the last two seasons, but he has NFL experience. He was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012 and 2013 and also served on the Chicago Bears’ staff from 1996-1998.

Ohio State will be in OK shape if Schiano takes a job at the professional level, however. Earlier this week the Buckeyes officially announced the hiring of Alex Grinch, who spent the last three years as Washington State’s defensive coordinator. If Schiano leaves Columbus, it seems like Grinch — who is getting paid $800,000 in 2018 — would be in line to take over the title of defensive coordinator.

I bet he ends up in New England. Belichick has drafted a bunch of Rutgers guys, some who were there during Schaino's time. Bill will be losing Matt Patricia to the Lions after the Super Bowl (I believe he'll be the head coach), so the Pats will have an opening. That's my guess unless Bill promotes from within.

Greg Schiano was a volunteer assistant at Berkeley Prep for the 2014 and 2015 season. Otherwise known as NPF's Freshman and Sophomore years of high school. He was hired 12/11/15 by Ohio State to be the DC, but has remained really close with the Berkeley Prep staff and so the relationship with Nicholas Petit-Frere is quite strong apparently. Ohio State offered NPF only 2 months after Schiano came to Columbus and they've been on him for almost two years now. Having said all that, I thought this recruitment was supposed to be different than the average college prospect's because he wasn't going to commit to a coach and rather be looking for a strong academic school and good football program. I could understand losing out to Florida because they are a very good academic school, they're a 2 hour drive away, and they have a huge need for good OLineman right now, but losing to Ohio State would be tough because they are stacked at OLine in terms of talent, his best relationship is with a Defensive Coordinator who may leave in a week or a year from now, and Ohio State isn't in the same realm of academic prowess that University of Florida is, let alone Notre Dame.

Ok. Fact that Schiano actually coached NPF in high school makes it a little less skeezy. But still. Don’t choose a school for an assistant coach! Don’t do it Nick!

(especially when said coach would right now be coaching someplace else if not for an Internet outrage mob. Schiano is clearly not long for OSU.)
