The thing I think that is overrated with recruiting is the star system and the rankings.

Getting a ton of 5 *'s vs. getting 3 or 4*'s don't matter to me anymore.

What ESPN thinks vs. 24/7 is just an opinion vs. someone else's opinion.

I've seen many MUST GETS in recruiting and A-mon Ra is a must get.

this is true to a large extent. I think he is definitely going to be a very productive college player, and he's very refined and polished for a high school receiver, could walk in right away and play.

My whole issue with the star system is they dish out too many 5 star ratings. I don't think they should have a set amount. Scout used to have 50 every year and 247 and Rivals have 30+. I like how ESPN does it. They never go in with a set amount. If they think there are only five 5* prospects in a class they only give out five 5* ratings. If they think there are 15 in a class then they give out 15. I think most years there are maybe only 5 to 10 kids who are so far ahead of everyone else in their class that they should be ranked 5*.

And I've got to be honest, I do really like how ESPN puts a premium on size + athleticism in their rankings.

I wonder how Bracy would have done on Mater Dei.

That kid is incredibly impressive, not to say St Brown isn’t

that's a fair point. St. Brown is obviously a talented player.

But at Mater Dei these kids are getting great coaching and playing with some of the best talent in Southern California that a rich private catholic school can recruit.

I think the R&R/star system is overrated PER PLAYER, however it is spot on when you look at the Average Player Rating of a program's class. Bama is Bama because they consistently have had the highest APR until last year when Ohio State passed them. They are building a juggernaut right now. When the '17 & '18 classes get to be upperclassmen... watch out.

The good news is Clemson showed you can coach up a squad with an team APR below 89 into a National Champ. It just takes a few impact All-American's, one of which needs to be the QB. I truly believe ND is doing this with the 2019 class. Every area of need is being addressed

QB: I would take Phil J over any QB in this class, or any class since Ron Powlus. In fact, he might be the all time perfect recruit regardless of position in the recruiting industry era including Powlus.

DB: I wouldn't trade Derrik Allen for any DB (CB or S) in the country. No doubt, he is the best all around DB in the country. He was a top CB before he grew out of the position and now he's a SS prospect who brings elite level coverage to the position at 6-2/215... a size bigger than most 4*/5* OLB's possess.

Safety: To go along with Allen, Griffith is right there with Jaiden Woodbey and Tyreke Johnson. Griffith's 2 years starting at IMG is a huge advantage for him vs. most S prospects. Like Allen, he's a converted CB who is also one of the best 7v7 DB's in the country. If I had my choice of any safety tandem, this is who I would pick for ND.

DT: I wouldn't trade Jay Ademilola for any DT in this class. Period.

Rover: I wouldn't trade Shayne Simon for any LB/S to man Rover. Plus he has the skillset to play Buck if Elko/Lea determine that JOK @ Rov + Simon @ Buck is better than Simon @ Rover and (ex) Ovie/Bauer @ Buck.

LB: I wouldn't trade the haul of Lamb, Bauer, Oghoufo & Simon for any other LB corp currently put together. If they get PooPoo, this class will be the all-time, absolute sh!t*.

WR: Film for film + production + measurables + fit = Austin vs ASB. There's no other Sr. WR in the country that looks more like a man over and over in their highlights like these two. Justin Shorter may have the best NFL body and measurables right now but Austin and ASB are them best combination of all the things ND needs in a WR. Pre-injury Kamryn Babb was in that list class too.

*Still got it.

He's a slam dunk Trojan now with Daniels reclassifying

I have seen kids reclassify in basketball, but football...c'mon.

This just happened to happen this time of year, I have my thoughts....

F USC
F Daniels and this reclassified $hit in football.

If ND wants Amon-Ra (I hope they don't give up) they have work to do!

Honestly would love to land this kid but it's not happening staff needs to just focus their efforts on keys and someone else. Nail in the coffin was Daniels going there this year

I'm glad you're not the Recruiting Coordinator. "They just signed his best bud, let's give up fellas."

Can't throw in the towel because of his family.

IF ESB isn't on the team... I'd have given him a date and said it's us by this date or we have to move on. On that date, if he doesn't pop, I leak it to the services that we've moved on and are focusing on the guy who's been #1 on our board the entire time... Lawrence Keys (or whoever). Give that kid coast2coast pub that ND wanted him more than ASB.

Hierarchy is the most powerful force in limited availability sales for premier products.

We set the date. It's called NSD... Or later if he wants. That's how elite talent gets handled.

Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk

and that's possibly how you miss out on near elite talent who knows they are #2 at best or not a take if the other guy commits. Keys and ASB will be competing for the same snaps.

My thing is ... if he was USC definite, wouldn’t he have popped already?

What does a late move parlay for an athlete of his stature? Just more attention?

I'm sure the staff that just landed a top ten class will take your expert opinion into consideration before making any future decisions.

How often do best friends/teammates/package deal types often sign with the same school?

Manti's Punahou teammate Robby Toma too long ago?

Manti committed on NSD 2/4/09. Toma's IE Recruiting file was opened on 2/6/09.
