He was rated a top 10 OG by one of the services so perhaps a good thing

ISD said they heard he practiced with OL Th & Fr.

If you read through this thread you'll see this shouldn't be a shock.

Not a shock just wanted to know if it was true. Apparently Driskell confirmed it. The OL just went from deep to deeeeep.

Always thought he was a better guard prospect coming out of high school than a DT. But I feel like need at the time had him starting out at DT for Notre Dame. With Hinish, MTA, Jayson A, Franklin, Lacey coming in, heck even MDT is healthy and has had a good camp and has two years left Ewell was not needed at DT.

Are his well talked about deficiencies likely to be an issue on the o-line?

I'm no sage, but strength/motor/conditioning might. On the other hand, if he lacks the ability to penetrate, but can stand/hold his ground, maybe not. His deficiencies are still a bit curious to me.

Yeah it is all a real head scratcher. I'd really like to see things work out well for him though.

Me too. It's just hard for me to see a guy that looks the part and was rated the part, be so not-the-part. Hoping some of the wiser guys weigh in.

In HS I could do 225 for 36

I ran a 4.67 in the 40 yard dash

I was 5ft 9in and weighed 205. I also played on the worst team in MO and looked like I could maybe lift 205 on bench, I maxed at 405 or 385? Point being, Ewell looked the part but that doesn't matter.

not really a good height/weight/ratings/rankings comparison. you didn't have the size or ratings coming out of HS.

i held the sack record for my team as a young'n, benched a bunch, and was a few ticks slower than an all state CB/RB. i know stuff doesn't work out for folks at the next level. This guy has the size, strength, ratings, etc...

I had 2 pass break ups in one game.

His career path seems to be on a Montellus trajectory currently...

Was thinking the same, though Montelus didnt turn around to defense until his senior year, IIRC. Ewell would have more time to adjust. Either side, I hope he can make an impact for us.

I threw for 6 TD's in one game once. It was Madden and I was playing as DeShone Kizer so I'm pretty proud of it.

OLine skills and DLine skills (the ones that REALLY count) don't have a lot of overlap. I don't know what Ewell's DLine issues are (Other than a trainload of talent in front of him), but those issues might not make any difference.

If Ewell can "dance" and "punch-recover", he can possibly pass protect and then play OLine. If he's strong and mean enough to maul people, then maybe he can open running holes. If he's smart enough to grasp the holistic combinations of five-man unity, then maybe he's an OLineman.

Right now who knows about any of that? (Beau mentioned Montelus. My observations there {shallow as they were} were that Montelus didn't have any of the three mentioned qualities at a level a Notre Dame OLineman had to have.)

... and, boy I wish that people would get off the "but he looks the part" eye-test. How many eye-test busts do we need to let that go, and watch Notre Dame football on-field productivity instead?

I caught a two point conversion back in Junior High. Still wonder why I'm not in the Junior High HOF?

He doesn't strike me as the type that would transfer, but you never know.

Speculation he’ll be moved back to DL with the lack of bodies at DT to start Spring practice

I feel like this speculation is obvious, so I hope it's true. No reason for him not to transfer if he stays at OL. It has to be either move back and compete at DT or transfer.

As a fan, transfer is best. By this time, if he has made no improvement, then he isnt more than hamburger squad material. Sad as this guy was my fave commit his year. I thought he would be destroying people by now.

As a person, would love for him to get that ND degree so I would want him to stay. Kudos and benefits for him.

This is one of the more bizarre misses of recent time. He was seemingly a big/strong kid in reasonable shape who, at worst, would be able to hold up inside and provide some reps/snaps. Because he was already so physically developed, I don't think very many thought his floor was 'never play a down of college football.' I have to assume there is more to this. Bad eating habits, lack of training outside of football related activities, etc.

Pretty sure he has a kid. That could be a contributing factor in all this.
