In general the East offensive line struggled during Saturday’s Army Bowl, and while Lugg was not the main culprit – in fact one of the few who had some success against the West defensive line – his place on this list is more attributable to his body of work over the entire week. The Notre Dame commit has certainly taken steps to improve since last off-season when we saw him, and displayed an excellent level of athleticism for the position.

Army Game: Best player, lowest risk, best leader superlatives

Quietest dominant week: Notre Dame OT commit Joshua Lugg

I don’t know how else to phrase it but for a guy that was just outstanding every day of the week, Lugg didn't quite get the buzz he probably deserved. I really think he is one of the best offensive linemen in this class. He's gifted physically, his film was good, he was a late addition to the game and he proved that he was one of the best on either roster.

More Army Bowl awards from Rivals.

https://n.rivals.com/news/army-bowl-awards-5

Bull Market award:
This goes to the player who raised his stock the most during the week and while there were several candidates for this award, Notre Dame offensive line commit Joshua Lugg from Pennsylvania gets the nod here. We have seen Lugg in person several times over the last few years and his performance this week in San Antonio was a pleasant surprise.

Honorable mention: A couple of three-star prospects from the state of Iowa – wide receiver Oliver Martin and offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs – made strong cases for a bump to four-stars, particularly Martin, who had a great week of practice. Ohio State defensive end commit Chase Young is already ranked as the No. 50 player in this class, but he’s going to get some five-star discussion in our final rankings meeting.

Security Blanket award:
This goes to the offensive lineman who quarterbacks should feel best about protecting their blindside and five-star Stanford commit Walker Little is the pick. Besides having prototypical size for the offensive tackle position, Little plays with great range and is very difficult for defensive ends to get around – exactly what you want from the guy responsible for keeping your quarterback healthy.

Honorable mention: There was not a lot of depth in this game from offensive tackles who could potentially play that left tackle position, but Little’s West and future Stanford teammate Foster Sarell showed well in that are, as did East offensive linemen Joshua Lugg and Andrew Thomas.

Relative to where he currently is, I'd expect a fairly big bump from 247 for Lugg.

I've seen nothing but Top 3 remarks from various analysts from 247, Rivals & Scout.

I think he's going to end up 10-15. Physically there are 6 or 7 guys in this class with his physical upside at OT. Then again, there's a lot of future NFL guys in this class. It's loaded.

It is a phenomenal OT class. I'd be surprised if he doesn't end up in the top 10-15 OT's, like you said.

And currently he is at 36th OT on 247 and 21st on the composite. So 247 is drastically bringing down the average here.

Any idea of when 247 and or other recruiting services update their rankings?

It is a joke. There are a lot of agenda's out there.

Weird thing is, their guy Helmholt (publicly --> documented on this board) went on and on about Lugg during Army Bowl Week, basically putting him in the Top 3 with Walker and Sarell, then when it comes time to talk about their big risers, they let Friedman throw him a nice, yet luke warm atta-boy saying he's not strong enough yet.* Whaaa?

Analyst’s take: “One of the big questions about Lugg heading into the all-star season was whether he would be physical enough to contend with other major prospects. The Notre Dame commit stepped up and played very well at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Lugg is a very good pass blocker but will need to get stronger before seeing meaningful playing time in South Bend.” - Friedman

Without looking (or knowing their academic situation), there are just TWO OT's I trade for him if I'm looking for a LT... Walker and Sarell. If I didn't have to worry about academic fit, throw in Leatherwood and maybe Isaiah Wilson after figuring out if he's LT material or just a giant RT/G. Lastly, Austin Jackson is a definite maybe but he needs 2 years of S&C.

Driskell is a huge Lugg fan and thinks he will be/is better then Foster Sarrell. Every single thing about this kid reminds me of Mike McGlinchey

I think it's pretty clear he's ahead of McG at the same points in their careers. He got 5 star press from US Army week. It's funny to go back through this thread and other recruits to see all the... "He's a definite RT", "He's too slow", "Might have to slide inside to guard", "Can't pass block" opinions. All I know is, he has the perfect frame for an NFL LT and all of a sudden people who do it for a living put him right up there with the 5 star OT's at the same event.

I'll let Mr. Lugg find his spot on this field. Nothing will surprise me as to where and when he plays. From now on I'll simply refer to him as the Prototype.

Amen Brother. Eichenberg-Kraemer-Hoge-Hainsey/Banks-Lugg.....L-R in the future. Lugg will move to LT after Eichenberg leaves and Boudreaux will be Center after Hoge leaves. We're in for some great OL play. IMO.

Still think there's just 3 guys who deserve to be higher than The Prototype as pure college OT prospects. Little, Sarell, Leatherwood. All the rest Lugg outperformed or they could be moved inside.

Final R&R's ..... 1-18-17:

247 Comp: ..... :s::s::s::s: ..... #16 OT ..... #126 OA ..... .9381 rating

247: ............... :s::s::s::s: ..... #13 OT ..... #84 OA ........ 95 rating
Rivals: ............ :s::s::s::s: ..... #22 OT ..... #236 OA ...... 5.8 rating
Scout: ............ :s::s::s::s: ..... #12 OT ..... #107 OA
ESPN: ............ :s::s::s::s: ...... #15 OT ..... #156 OA ...... 82 rating

I've watched A LOT of film of this class plus watched both AA games. I agree with you. I've also heard that Lugg's younger than most. Not sure if he skipped a class or whatever but I think he still looks quite young and that he could end up growing more. Future 1st round pick!
