He doesn't have the mobility of Book, but Book wouldn't throw anything longer than about 15 yards unless he was forced to like in the VT game. He also had an aversion to going through his progressions when his primary was covered. He'd just pull it down and run. Lately Coan has also shown the ability to throw the ball away, so I see him growing in that area. He did scramble against GT, but overall he has been too stationary for most of the season. Both had their faults, but there were way more positives than negatives for both, which is basically what I'm saying.

Agree with all this. Both are maddening and if you fused the two together you'd have a heisman caliber QB lol

RS rule didn't come into effect until 2018-19. Therefore, he did not red-shirt in 2017. He played 3 games thus burning his 1st year of eligibility.

I want to see what Buchner has. Only way he develops is with full #1 practice reps and live rounds. Coan is a nice QB if we wanna MAYBE make the playoff, but we aren't winning it all with him most years. This year was the exception in terms of it being "wide open" (but of course there's Georgia).

Skillset-wise, Buchner offers a better chance to beat an elite Georgia, Bama, Clemson, OSU. It's the classic high floor vs. high ceiling. We've seen how high Coan's floor is. It's nice -- minimum of a "NY6" game, in the convo for a CFP berth. Now I wanna see how high Buchner's ceiling is and really take a step up and join the ranks of the CFB elite.

My reasoning for not wanting him back, besides the fact that he's ineligible, is that I do not believe he has the skill-set required to beat OSU and/or Clemson. You decided to offer the scarecrow argument that McNamara beat OSU therefore I must prefer him over Coan. It's not even remotely apples to apples. Michigan beat them with 300 yd and 5 touchdowns on the ground. Do you really believe in your heart of hearts that Notre Dame's offensive line is capable of that against either OSU or Clemson?

With Clark being an unknown going into the season after coming off injury, and 5 Star Philure leaving a few years back, Coan was needed this year for sure. I didn't like it at first, especially behind the struggling OL, but it somehow really worked well after the Bye. I probably would have still rather had Pyne and Buckner sharing reps at the start, but it is what it is. It was never supposed to be an 11-1 season, credit both Rees and Freeman for improving each squad as the season went on.

Wouldn't be against another QB transfer. It's incredibly important that Freeman's momentum isn't killed by poor QB play. Buchner is a giant wild card right now.

I believe that is correct. If so, it’s a bullshit rule as he was still on the team. That begin said, I think it’s time for him to move on to the next phase of his life. I thank him for all he’s done in a short period of time. Solid individual as a person & a player.

I agree. I think we take the leap of faith with Tyler. If Ian came back this year, there is no doubt in my mind that we are 12-0. His mobility and understanding of the offense would have been able to manage the growing OL earlier this year.
