Either Wisconsin really messed up giving the nod to Mertz or we're in trouble.

Coan doesn't make mistakes, or at least that what the people say. Mertz is mistake prone. Some of those ball handling errors were jr high stuff, totally unforced.

Little concerned we got the guy who couldn't beat out Mertz as our starter.

From what Ive read, there was never really an open competition after he got hurt. Mertz was highly ranked, played well after Coan went down, and they hitched their wagon to him.

Relax guys, Coan’s better QB, Mertz had ONE good game and was shit after that. Wiscy had COVID issues so that covered up a lot of Mertz issues would’ve been exposed had there been a normal season. Wiscy rolled the dice on the younger and higher ranked QB and I they made the wrong bet.

^This…Wiscy’s starting QB Alex Hornibrook transferred to FSU for the 2019 season and Coan and mertz competed for the starting job. Coan beat out Mertz and was the starter leading Wiscy to a great season including the B1G championship.

Coan got injured in practice before the 2020 season so Mertz began the season as the starting quarterback. His amazing start (20-21 passing) led to him pretty much to being crowned the starter eventually leading to Coan transferring.

Makes sense then that Coan is the starter. BK favors the steady hand under center, not the more talented guy that's prone to turnovers and inconsistent accuracy.

Stoked to see Coan tonight. Will be interesting to see how they use him. Will he be mobile like Book, or are we going back to a more pro style offense?

Mobile like Book? There were much fewer running plays called for Book last year, most of that was improv and I hope that's not what Coan looks like. I'd be happy with 20 yards from Coan on the ground. I want him pulling the trigger on time and with anticipation.

Might throw a more catchable deep ball than Book but not convinced his arm is any stronger than Ian’s.

Played extremely well. Hoping he gets his 3rd down pocket jitters out of the way and hangs in there to start delivering strikes. For example - go look at the last series of regulation on third down - had a DIG route coming open in a window with just one more second of patience.

Definitely does not have a big arm. Probably can throw it about ~50 in the air. It’s the main thing limiting his NFL upside.

Would like to see the middle of the field more would be only critique. Overall everything I realistically hoped for.

Big ball 3rd/4th downs. No fear. Loved the tds.

More middle of the field. But overall very happy. Love my "offensive player of the year pick" for him.

Agreed. As good as Jack was tonight you could see that he under threw Lenzy on the near sideline in the 2nd Q and the Hail Mary was surprisingly short.

Keep working on timing with Lenzy and Austin. We get those guys routinely firing on all cylinders it'll really make this offense hum along with Mayer and Kyren/Tyree. Dynamic.

Coan played a hell of a game last night. Was EVERY pass perfect? No. Will ALL of his passes be perfect this year? No. His experience at Wisconsin will pay off. The WR's that he has at ND that he didn't have at Wisconsin will pay off. I was impressed with Coan.

Great first game for Jack. We need to open this offense up and spread teams out more. Throw to open the run if they are going to stack the box like FSU, Jack can make them pay and we have the weapons to do it. So much failed execution by our offensive weapons that it can only get better from here. I bet we don't see Mayer with two drops on 3rd down anymore this season. Kyren had a drop I think. Some guys are trying to run before they get the ball.

Book's arm strength was never really the issue. It was more his willingness to let it fly down field. Coan, for his apparent lack of arm strength, appears to at least have the vision and/or willingness that Book lacked. And that's exactly what the passing offense needed.

I think Jack played well. He hadn’t played in a game for quite a while, had a rebuilt offensive line still coming together and in a very hostile environment…….I would expect his pocket awareness to improve as the season goes on which should result in impressive play on his part. The stat line he had for his first game back at a new school with a new system should create some optimism.

Great start for Coan. I hope we really see him pile up the stats these next two weeks.
