A QB that sets his feet and steps up in the pocket will be interesting to watch next year.

A QB that is decisive. That will take a while to get use to.

Nice to see a QB who stays in the pocket! Looks like he goes through his progressions too without panicking.

Doesn’t exactly have the same build, but does anyone see Tommy Rees in his dropback and throwing motion? Maybe that’s just the last pocket passer of ours that I can remember.

Would be great if true, but according to the university of Wisconsin website he participated in 6 games his freshman year, and would have one year of eligibility.

Year Games Played
2017 6
2018 5
2019 14

2020 he was injured, but free year anyway.

that was something

This was a good move in my eyes, and if TB is as smart as we think he is, he thinks so too.

Get a veteran QB in there and don't make it feel like he has to be the savior for the whole program.

Sit back and watch how a guy thats prepared for huge games, and is no shlub, does it.

ND has a lot of potential on offense this coming year... im glad we're not just pushing it all in on a true freshman that didn't play any football this year. Go Irish. Good move.

Can we get a Cephus too?

Yup, that would be nice. Almost 60 catches for 900 yards that year. Unfortunately he got drafted to the Lions this year. A Cephus would be nice though, we desperately need a real playmaker/threat at WR. A few actually.

Is that going to be any worse than potentially having a first time starter for the opener in Columbus in 2022?

2022 is a brutal slate....OSU, Clemson, USC, Stanford, UNC among others. I would prefer 2021 be used to build for 2022.

Youre right. There's no perfect answer here.

I think bringing in a vet is the way to go though. Especially since TB is coming in with a fair amount to get ironed out.

It seems like the best way, but what the hell do I know?

This is an excellent point and is probably one of the reasons BK has been looking at QB's. It's going to be a long time between games for Buchner, he needs to learn a new system, adjust to college life and add that he's a freshman with the academic requirements, BK probably thinks it could be a lot to put on his shoulders, so his gets Coan as a safety net in case Buchner doesn't come in and flash immediately.

Love the analysis with Urban and Coach D. Wonder how things sound in the ND QB room.

like the pickup. just quickly watching the film, a couple things I like is that he seems to make pretty quick decisions. That's going to be big with an inexperienced O line.

This makes me feel like now the offense is not going to be evolve in the spring. The coaching staff is just going to continue “doing what they do”, which we all know won’t win you games against elite teams. Hopefully this a true open competition but I highly doubt it.

Had to be done. There are two healthy QBs on the roster going into next year and one will be a true freshman. Sure you can wait and see who else pops up in the portal, there will almost certainly be more talented QBs in there. But this guy wanted to come, and is good enough to help you, so they made the conservative move.

Also, there is no guarantee Coan starts. Even if he does, maybe it is only for the first few games

We know Kelly is very deliberate in playing young players and doesn't do it often. But if Buchner comes in and his throwing motion is back to normal, and he picks up the offense and isn't struggling with the transition to college (Like JJ supposedly was), it will be hard to not play him. His upside is leagues better than the other QBs on the roster.

Yes we did and I won’t take that from them but in these games, what has been the problem? The offense doesn’t score. 2 offensive TDs before end of regulation. Plus look at this years schedule vs next year. I rather get a new starter ready this year to be prepped for what is coming in 2022 which includes Ohio State and Clemson. The 2021 schedule is manageable and no matter who is the starter, I don’t see us competing for a playoff spot next year.

The second Clemson game does not fill me with confidence about the offensive philosophy Notre Dame was rolling out this year.

Would love to know what offense you'd have run with pedestrian WR core and a QB who can't throw a slant because he isn't tall enough to see over OL

The primary problem with the offense is talent, for sure.

However the gameplan for the last two games seemed to basically be ball control, not because you think you can win like that, but because you can avoid a blowout like that. The coaches know you don't line up and blow full strength Clemson or Alabama off the ball for 4 quarters and run 15 play TD drives consistently.

I think a lot of people would have preferred taking chances down field, and getting the ball to Tyree, Williams, and Keys more to have a shot at a big play.

That said, ND didn't have the horses and nothing would have changed the outcome. I think the offense just rubbed people the wrong way because it was basically a white flag from the jump.

I know we really only get t see the good in these clips but he seems like a good pick up. He has good touch, he leads his receivers, he doesn't have Ian Book legs but he does have Tommy Reses legs either. His vision is always down field looking and he stays in the pocket to give his guys just that extra half second. This just might be good for ND and the offense.

Definitely more willing to let it rip than Book. That’s what we all want, just know that more interceptions will come with that. Gotta take the good w/ the bad...at least he gives receivers a chance.
