I don't think keys or lenzy are good at football and so we're likely going to be running out a WR core with very little experience. Coan looks like a guy who will spread the ball around which is a great way to build their confidence and keep them engaged.

I think the possibly of the passing attack being a shitshow under Coan is close to zero while it's certainly possible with the three we have currently. If it's a shitshow then you get to the point where receivers arent developing or worse - leaving the program.

I get the politics argument but they'll both be here in the spring so it's not like benching an incumbent or existing leader. If Buchner is really clearly better then I think he'll start, even if it's not week one. But the jump from poor competition Jr year to no competition sr year to starting qb of notre dame is really stark.

We should still have Austin, Wilkins, and Davis.

I thought Wilkins looked pretty good running routes when he got in. Still confused why he didn't more snaps. And then there is Austin. He should be fully ready by next August. Not a ton of returning production but they know the offense and been in the program so know the expectations.

Are we sure about that? His 2019 season yielded 8.0 yards/attempt and 11.5 yards per completion. Those numbers are worse than Book’s 2020.

and he had multiple games where he threw it less than 20 times. From my watching Coan I thought he was decent when given the chance, just was rarely given the chance.

On a highlight film, he looks good throwing the ball downfield. But...so would Book if you were just watching the completed ones. Can't say I watched enough to know if those yds/att numbers were due to his inefficiencies, the offenses, etc.

I really don't know how to feel. I like Pyne and Buchner.

Call me crazy, but would ND dare lock him up and still flirt with other portal QB’s? If they are down Clark I definitely wouldn’t be mad if we still kept pushing for another higher level guy. Let them all battle it out for QB1.

Good point lol. Can improvise/run, leadership qualities, used to a TE heavy system. Sounds familiar for sure. Basically had 1 TE and 1 WR worth anything last year and Wisconsin knew they could win most games with Taylor 30 times a game. Coan is used to the limitations ND may put him in. Ultimately doesn’t lift the program too much but I think the smallest chance maybe you see a bit more than we saw with Book.

Davis yes but I would still put Austin and Wilkins in the category of transfer risk if the passing game is a shitshow. Snap wise they are both still inexperienced, and Austin has now spent one year learning scout team offenses and one on the injury table.

These Grad Transfers (GT) are like NFL free agents, movement all over the place.

For example, if after spring practice a GT doesn't like where he stands on the depth chart he can transfer again in August. And if you don't like what you've go in the QB room after spring you can go get another. There's guys going into the portal all spring and summer.

Its better to get right guy in January of course.

I think you're discounting the amount of snaps some of these guys have played. Over the last 2 seasons, all of Davis, Lenzy, and Keys have played 300+ snaps. Wilkins played 186 this year alone. Then you have Austin who only has 25 this year, none last year, but did get a decent amount as a freshman. We aren't devoid of guys that have played significant snaps. Could all those guys transfer? Sure. Is it likely? Don't think so. And, would they transfer mid-season when they find out the passing game is crap? That seems doubtful.

Mississippi State had that this past season I believe where I think they had 5-6 scholarship QB’s going into the season and KJ Costello won the job and two guys transferred. It has been said that you have to worry about taking too many because it can hurt recruiting but I think at QB it’s a fallacy. Most recruits aren’t looking at ND’s depth chart and doing the mental gymnastics as to when they’ll start. Some do for sure but many think they’re the next best thing and they’ll play soon. That’s how Duke keeps stacking 5 stars in basketball. Everyone thinks they’ll be the guy. If someone big time entered the portal between now and the start of second semester then I’d ponder an addition because if the new Grad Transfer QB beat out Coan then Coan could always move to a new place in the summer who’s in need of a QB. If Buchner wins the job maybe the GT will transfer anyway. I say if there’s a big time QB talent, take them.

It just goes to show that just because you run fast in track means nothing on the field if you don’t work on it.

We all know that if Coan wins the job, Buchner isn't getting any development, game play wise. So it's either have TB grow in 2021 or 2022. I'd rather it be 2021 and develop with all the young WR talent together.

I remember the first half vs OSU in the conference championship game, next. Maybe this works out having a veteran on board.

I think Kelly will let us know that it will be an open competition throughout the spring, summer and into fall camp. Then he’ll start Coan.

Sorry if already posted but how many years of eligibility does he have left?

Surely BK is going to change his approach to this. Start with Coan but get Buchner in every chance you get.
I think this is great news.
