“I’m big on academics,” said Phillips. “Stanford was an incredible offer. Something I’ve dreamed of since I was seven years old. That was before I ever realized I was going to play football in college. That and UCLA were my dream offers as a kid. At this point, I’ve moved past the dream offer part and am just looking at it practically and finding where is best for me.”

They love what they see,” said Phillips regarding conversations with the Irish staff. “They really want me to be able to come and see what it’s like. You really can’t get the full experience until you actually get out there and see it first hand. I’ve never been to Indiana, so I definitely want to get out there and see what it’s like. Notre Dame is super prestigious. They are high up on my list. I definitely want to get out there and see how it is.”

“I’ll make one of UCLA’s spring practices next month,” said Phillips. “I’m trying to get out to Notre Dame at some point and the University of California has been trying to get me to come up.

“Some of these schools I may not visit the spring, I’d like to get to in the summer. I just have to schedule things with my parents. I know I want to get to the University of Washington again at some point. There is a Notre Dame camp in the late spring or early summer. So, I’m just trying to connect with the coaches and see what I can come to.”

“Right now, who I consistently talk to, the University of Washington,” said Phillips. “I’ve always been talking to them since I they first offered me.

“UCLA, I talk to them very often. I talk to Stanford a lot. Notre Dame. I talk to the coaches on a regular basis. When it comes to at least once a week or more than that, it’s definitely Washington, UCLA, Notre Dame, Stanford.”

they do have a history of great LB's but defensive country? I can't remember the last time Miami fielded a good defense, let alone one I'd consider really good.

Once he has to get on a shuttle bus and drive 30-45 minutes from campus to watch "The U" with 19,000 people in a 70,000 seat stadium he'll realize Ray Lewis doesn't come out of that tunnel any longer.

If Richt had the facilities, he'd be Top 5 in a heartbeat.

Thankfully he doesn't. I don't hate many teams in sports but that one's on my list with FSU.

That's not shocking. There are so many ND fans here in OC. It's really about the same as being in the Chicago suburbs. I get multiple "Go Irish" everyday when I have gear on. It's almost like SC and ND are OC's pro teams.

Rankings updates: A new five-star out West

Jaelan Phillips blew me away at The Opening Los Angeles. He's now ranked No. 9 in the country and is a five-star prospect on 247Sports.

The 6-5, 235-pounder out of Redlands (Calif.) East Valley had outstanding testing numbers led by a 4.7 40-yard dash. He also was the best pass rusher of the event, beating offensive linemen in a variety of ways. That was even more impressive given that he had planned on working out at the event as a linebacker.

You turn on the film of Phillips and that linebacker ability shines. He's got great instincts in his pass drops, he has ball skills, he can play in space but he's clearly an elite edge rusher as well. Talk to Phillips and it's clear that the kid has a good head on his shoulders. He's the first prospect of this camp season that lets us enthusiastically check every box.

Right now Stanford is the Crystal Ball leader for Phillips but he's becoming a priority for USC, UCLA, Michigan and several other national powers.

I hope I'm proven wrong, but given what's been posted and watching videos this isn't going to happen. Expect a visit, then a surge where everyone gets excited and then poof! An all too common occurrence for Cali kids, especially when they're 5*.
