I couldn't believe the opening of that show on ESPNU. They were oohing and awing about Chase all week, and then they entirely cut him out of any accolades, at the opening of the show, and then finally someone said something nice, (and truthful, though understated) during his commitment tape.

I thought it was funny the comment they made about what ND was doing at Wide Receiver, with St. Brown, and Boykin, now Claypool, kind of going supersized. Do ya' think?

I just had to turn the show off -- but congrats to the Claypools, and all Irish fans! What a great time to be Irish!

Ádh mór! Téigh Gaeilge, agus Mhuire go deo!

Can I get an objective analysis of this young man's tape for the uninformed? Reps will be distributed.

Haha, so true. He's doing a good job of convincing the world he should play WR. However, this is very similar to Procise. As good as he is on offense, I think he could be that much better on D. JMO.

I know you've been all about him playing LB, wherever he starts his career I hope he finishes on defense. Love his nose for the football. Such a natural flow to it.

I don't know if all of this is exact, but as I take the whole gestalt, Chase came in as a relative unknown, ran a 4.68 forty and scored above a hundred on his SPARQ. Most impressive was his agility test of 4.31, which indicates his acceleration and lateral movement are close to elite.

The general consensus was that he ran his routes very well, and was regularly noted as one of the receivers who gained clean, early separation. His hands were pretty spectacular, and he put his whole self into it, including one catch where he landed head first, (sort of.)

The analysts had nice things to say about him, and how he really deserved his recent 4 star bump. Many said that they thought originally, seeing his size (just shy of 6'6") that he should find another position, but after his performance, everyone was really okay with him staying at wide receiver. Strangely, with ND as a favorite for his commitment, there were few if any naysayers, he was generally well respected by players and analysts.

Oh yeah, and he really mixed it up with some of the best defenders in the country, who were at the camp to make a name for themselves. He beat a couple of Oregon and USC defensive commits soundly.

General consensus has never been nor at this occasion that he runs good routes. I honestly haven't seen that ( through video) or read that from anywhere. What he is, is a physical freak that is making a living high pointing balls and tough catches. I'm might be his biggest fan but I'll also catch where he is not and that is a complete WR. Very raw and unsure of everything that goes into that craft. Absolutely love him as a prospect but not a finish WR.

Bogs, I get your thing right now is hating on all the "pundits" but the reality is there are a lot people out there that watch a lot of football outside of you, that understand the game too.

Lucky, not all the pundits. Certainly not anyone who posts here, Mike Frank or his guys, Phil Steel, Tom Luginbill (by in large), Jesse Palmer, Tom Lemming, Lou Holtz, Chris Spielman, anyone on the ND beat, especially Eric Hansen, Jac Collinsworth, the ghost of Beano Cook . . . you get the idea. I just don't want you to think I am speaking in generalities, nor that I am jaded, or exceptionally negative. It's just that when someone wears a press badge, you expect them to be about having a neutral affect on what they are reporting, not to be part of the back room and under the table dealings that go on in the sport. And the last thing the world needs is another chauvinistic ass-hat fan for a shiit school wolfing all over the airwaves.

As far as Chase :

It just so happens he was a consecutive finisher in SPARQ ratings with a 247 National Top Ten Four Star receiver (rated number 81 overall). To cut to the "Chase," Claypool has an extra inch of height, forty more pounds, and only gives up 0.04 seconds in the forty yard dash. Chase crushes Victor in the agility test by over 0.3 seconds and only gives up 0.2 inches vertically. Where Chase lags compared to Victor is with the Kneeling powerball toss; my question is that event coaching or truly explosiveness? Can it be taught or will time in a weight program make up that deficit?

Binjimen Victor 2016 WR 6-4.5 173 4.62 4.65 41 35.3 99.27
Chase Claypool 2016 WR 6-5.5 214 4.66 4.31 33.5 35.1 99.21

Here is part of a One Foot Down report previously quoted :

- All the talk about Chase Claypool as a player has been about him possibly getting too big to stick at receiver. Yesterday he showed me he can hang with the elite at the position and him being a jumbo receiver might actually be the best fit for him. He showed strong hands and was a much better route runner than I expected. He frequently created separation from himself and the defensive backs covering him.

In addition the ESPN crew covering at the time of his commitment had some nice things to say about his route running.

And I have talked to an acquaintance at the Opening who told me the kid has a ridiculous sense of where his body is at, and was a much better route runner than he expected.

And I totally agree with you Lucky, Chase is far from a finished product!

Several of the paid site guys said they were very much surprised by his route running...in a good way because that was a previous knock on Him

Very similar to Betiku, I think he's getting better fast. However, he's not at an elite level like other are (Mack, Corley, etc). Love him and super excited but at this point it's a work in progress from an exceptional athlete. I'll take it everyday!!!!!!

Lucky... I didn't watch any of ESPN's coverage of The Opening so I want to ask you this: Are the Irish getting a slightly taller, more athletic Corey Robinson at this point?

At this point different players. Claypool is much more physical and imposing. They have similarities in that they are both good at jump balls due to being tall and long. I don't think Claypool is a natural hands catcher. Doesn't mean he has bad hands necessarily but it's not as natural for him as some guys like Robinson. Robinson was always, from tape, a very good hands catcher. I don't believe last year was a good representation of his catching ability, injury involved. With that said Robinson has always had trouble at the line due to strength and physicality. Claypool won't once he understands the technique to get off the line. He's strong enough that it's hard to keep him down, but he has doesn't have good technique right now. When he does, it'll be easy for him to abuse DB's off the line. Similar in that both early on will be/were jump ball guys. I think Claypool has a better chance at being an everydown guy earlier than Robinson, provided he figures out how to get in and out of breaks better. Robinson doesn't because he lacks the actual explosion or strength in his lower half to do so. Claypool doesnt because he doesn't have the right technique or general idea of it.

Probably makes the most sense to stick him at OLB, but...

Loved his jump ball catches, because teaching someone to high point the ball is actually very hard to do, it's really a natural thing. Would love to have a guy like Eifert in 2012, or Gronk/Dez/Calvin in the NFL who you have to double team on the goal line because fades are unstoppable. It would be interesting to try and develop him into a TE. Eifert was never anything better than an average blocker, but he was unstoppable in the passing game and that was with a RS Frosh QB and a hamstrung offense.

I'll disagree on Eifert being an average blocker. He wasn't a 1st rd pick becuase he was average at blocking. It was because he developed his entire game at a very high level for a college prospect.

His tape proves it and that's what they showed Alize to convince him they would complete his game for that exact scenario
