Agreed. There were some shocking instances of not one receiver being open yesterday. Not too sure if that’s related to play-calling, players not being fast enough or poor route running but Finke hasn’t been quite the same as last year for now. Hopefully it means going to the slot puts him back as an effective WR.

I have zero clue what BK is doing at WR. Fink on the outside exploits his limitation, and hides his talents. I absolutely love Finke but he's not starting even as a #3 for most of the big boy teams.

In terms of speed, ESPN lists Claypool as 4.6, and McKinley 4.78. Nothing listed for Finke but I'd guess he's mid to high 4.5s. Not sure how accurate the ESPN times are, but guessing they're from the Opening or similar. Assuming their close to being correct, not a lot of speed with those three.

I'd be stunned if it was Coach who's insisting on Finke being out wide --- Long has changed Coach's offense and he'll have most say on field personnel positioning. Sure Kelly can overrule, but not likely this early in 2019.

As to McKinley --- DAMM he looked good out there. A roughneck.

My gut tells me Long wanted more speed at slot, and BK was not OK with benching Finke so the compromise was to work him more outside. Give me Claypool and Wilkins the outside WRs, and Wilkens/Lenzy splitting time at slot.

Loved what McKinley did, but they should not be sending him on deep routes unless he's going against a tiny DB. He had zero separation on most routes.

Say he continues to play and produce, finishing with 20-25 catches for the year. Does he earn a fifth year?

Would it make sense to have Finke play outside in more deep ball situations and McKinley on short-yardage/red zone plays?
Agree Finke is kind of lost out there right now. But Von has a lot of limitations as an outside guy too.

I actually like Von as a bully slot or outside in a goal line situation.
I just don't like Finke on the outside at all. Doesn't have the size, or the speed to really blow the top off. He's best as a traditional slot.

This doesn't sound good. Was hoping he could be the 35/600/5 guy next year and help Austin & Johnson assume their roles with his guidance. Oh well, I'll be watching wherever he lands... Tempe's not a bad spot.

Postgame Lenzy mentioned something about him not coming back but was unsure if that was actually being informed of his decision or just a generalization due to graduating. I’m really high on the young guys and we’ll have Kmet/Tremble for size but I would agree with ya Crus. Was hoping he’d be a veteran leader for those guys.

Whatever his numbers he'd be nice to have back. The dude can block. He'd be insurance in case Austin or Johnson get hurt (or whatever). And he seems like a guy who'd be good to have in the locker room. I almost always think you're better off having 5Ys than not.

That 'Gram had an air of finality to it though, for sure. Will be rooting for him wherever he lands.

He's wanting more playing time and sees Lenzy emerging and Austin probably in front of him as well.

He was nice to have around. He didn't catch the balls thrown to him enough. My only gripe.

??? Seems to me he caught everything thrown to him this year. 11/268/4 on very limited targets. If I was a QB and a WR was giving me 24 per reception, he'd get more looks

Do you think he'd start ahead of Lenzy or Austin? Those numbers make it sound like you think he'd be the no. 2 option.

Lenzy doesn't count, dif position and Austin??? We'll believe it when we see it. I do think with Claypool out of the way, he'd get that even sharing his side of the field w/ Austin or whoever not named Claypool.

He's wanting more playing time and sees Lenzy emerging and Austin probably in front of him as well.

Hopefully he goes somewhere where he can be the man and his P's can see him more often and where he can get a quality additional degree... UCLA? Cal?

ND doesn't really have a guy like McKinley on the roster except for Micah Jones. McKinley would be missed but I understand he might want to find a place where he can be a primary option to showcase himself for the NFL.

O’Malley cited a source on today’s II podcast saying McKinley may now return to school and play next season. Referred to the change at OC as the reason. Still sounds like it’s in the rumor stage though.

Prister added that he was told Boykin would’ve returned this season had Long not been on staff.

Damn, Boykin and this year's Claypool would have been amazing.

Is he a take? He had two really good games against our 2 worst opponents but only 4 catches for 79 yards in the other 10.

Yes. Experienced, big bodied WR who can block, seems like a good locker room guy. I’d take him back even if he’s not lighting up the stat sheet.

This^. Especially w/ the depth being depleted by loss of Claypool, Finke & Young. Keys & Lenzy are only returning WR w/ game reps and neither are big bodied pass catchers. He’s undoubtedly a take.

In a way Boykin wasn't Boykin until his senior year (except for the LSU game). I was certainly quite surprised by the pro day stats. I suspect McKinley maybe the same. The guy certainly has my respect

If Long indeed was such an issue as being purported, then this is on CBK for not being more proactive to resolve the issue. Sounding as if team was on the brink of imploding had Long not been let go. I get the loyalty CBK shows to his staff, but he should have learned with his earlier experience with BVG that bad apples need to be removed sooner than later.
Wouldn't mind McKinley coming back, he's a good blocker, can catch and run, and knows the system. Could help bridge the young guns that are coming on board.

Given the performance I don’t think the team was near imploding. IMO Kelly handled it correctly. You have to let these things play out to an extent otherwise you send a message that the team has some control on what happens.

clark lea had reached out to the offense's parents to discuss things throughout the year....did you want him fired in the middle of the season?
