I am not understanding initially recruiting him at Db. Then saying they will recruit him as an athlete. Doesn't he want to be a WR? If so why are we recruiting him if we need a DB?
Much prefer him to Farrar. Need more rangy FS
Because you can move him once he gets here.. at the end of the day the kid wants to play
That's also how it gets around that coaches lie and break promises, which is never a good thing. It's also how transfers happen.
Have a ton of respect for Kelly for not straight up lying to these kids unlike other coaches.
I respect him for not lying, but it's also not a great strategy for a recruiter at the highest level of college football.
You bring the kid in, you give him an honest shot to play the position that he wants, and then you just make sure that it's very clear to him that his two options are: 1) Never play at WR, or 2) Move to safety and play. With the WR depth ND has, I'm pretty sure Gary either actually BECOMES a stud WR and plays (which is great), or he realizes he doesn't have what it takes and switches to safety.
See, Florida and Justin Trattou. While committed to ND, Urban Meyer said that ND was going to move him from DE to DT, a position Justin refused to play. So Urb says "Come to Florida and I promise you'll get your shot at DE."
So Justin goes to Florida and gets his shot at DE. Like everyone on Earth who already knew he'd never see the field at DE, Justin finally realized he couldn't cut it and moved to DT where he ended up having a good career.
In that case, Charlie was took honest with him. Urb played along and gave the kid his shot, knowing darn well that he'd eventually get sick of riding the pine and make the switch.

Isn't there basically a version of this story with Anthony Barr too? That was before I really paid attention to any of this crap.
