Did kicking the head of an player down with a head injury do anything to help ND win the game?

Did stepping on the ankle of a player on the ground do anything to help ND win the game?

You're confusing thuggery with clean, hard, aggressive play.

Nicco had a clean, hard, aggressive tackle on the shoulder of Ware. It turned into a Targeting flag when the ball carrier lower his own head resulting in helmet to helmet contact.

The rule states:

No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul.

When in question, it is a foul. There was nothin in question about Tillery's blatant, unsportsmanlike conduct. In both cases long after the whistle Tillery tired to injure a downed player.

My point is not about a rule trying to limit injuries it's about the distinct difference in Nicco making a clean, hard, aggressive play and Tillery treating a downed injured player with disdain and trying to cause additional injury. Tillery did NOTHING to promote ND winning a game. He just acted like a punk.

Tillery situation and winning than losing with dignity were two separate issues that got mixed together. Obviously what Tillery did had no effect on the outcome. Two separate issues. Let's move on...nothing to see here.

Jerry Tillery should be embarrassed and ashamed of himself. He's a great kid and should know better. He should tweet out an apology for his actions and make things right. He did not represent the University of Notre Dame in the right way. His actions says it all. He should apologize and then be held accountable. It's the only right thing to do.

Once is heat of the moment. Twice in the same game is beyond classless.

At least he didn't punch a fan like Jabrill Peppers.

He should be ashamed of himself, and I wouldn't object to a suspension of some sort. That was a pathetic end to this crappy season. Frustrated or not, that was an embarrassment to the team and school.

You are crazy. I too like when someone on the team shows emotion and frustration. If Tillery is frustrated may he should get frustrated with his own teammates and not make a USC move.

Very, very well said. For the first time ever in my life, I was embarrassed by a member of Notre Dame in a USC game and actually felt bad for the USC guys as they played a pretty clean game. Thought the targeting shot was pretty hack too, but what do you expect from a team being led by a lame duck coach.

That was more of a shove to the face than a punch, but the intent was clearly there.

I will say at least Peppers got bumped into, albeit unintentionally, Tillery went after two guys laying on the turf that had nothing to do with him.

Dude he slugs (shoves?) in the face had his hands up and was apologizing for for bumping into him... so I strongly contend what Peppers did was orders of magnitude worse. He could literally face criminal charges for what he did.

It happens pretty quickly I doubt Peppers even saw him putting his hands up. If you watch the slowmo at the end you can see Peppers is still holding onto the collar of the guys shirt when he shoves him. That definitely wasn't a punch to the face.

Football is a great game but a terrible God.

Tillery bumping the player's helmet when he could have had a potentially serious head/neck injury was just awful. Then stepping on another player's foot was a bit classless. The first instance deserves a suspension for a game; the second instance deserves some running till he pukes.

Peppers was reacting as any player would when the field gets stormed.

We'll disagree on that one. One shove out of the way when the guy gets in your way, sure. But to then go back, recollect the same individual, put your face in his face, and then shove him in the face again is a step beyond.

Highly trained athletes in full pads should never initiate contact with civilians, no matter who bumped into who first. Harbaugh and his statie basically herded Peppers off the field all the way to the locker room.

I can buy that I guess but, even as much as I loathe UM, I am willing to let Peppers slide on it. I think in a similar situation I would have reacted the same way.

Tillery's antics were horrible--as the perfectly justified response of the coaching staff demonstrated.

That was a low point for the season, and he really needs to figure out what he's about.

Classless, not once but twice. Glad he was removed from the game. He needs to grow up, not like he did anything all season. Very underwhelming season.

Really just the death throes of a terrible season. Happy to see it end. Tillery needs some time away just like the rest of the guys. We all react to stress in different ways. He was broken out there by the end of that game. Thats why his teammates had to bring him to the bench and calm him down.

I strongly believe that fans charge the field at their own peril. It's an incredibly intense game. Imagine having a Michigan fan standing in your face and shoving you while he celebrated after the Tate Forcier comeback. I would have reacted, too, and I didn't even play.

That said, Peppers went beyond that. He kept at it after he got the guy off of him. He should probably face consequences.

I don't know how to compare what Tillery did with what Peppers did. But I'm absolutely disguisted with Tillery. I hope he gets a game or two suspension next year.

Not disagreeing with the rest of your post about Peppers going too far, but just to be clear the OSU fan in question was not "shoving" Peppers or being obnoxious. He had his back turned to him and wasn't aware he was in Peppers path. This is the best breakdown I've seen of it so far:

Lot of people chirping at me about Jabrill Peppers shoving the OSU fan, saying the fan attacked him, etc. Here's the Zapruder break down. pic.twitter.com/Aj3cVYzJTC
— Heavens! Kelly should make Jerry call Clancy to apologize and also have him send a message to USC. I'm for tough play and nastiness, but this sht is not ND, period.

He didn't fucking punch the guy. I get it, we hate Michigan but come on.

What the hell is with all you truthers? He basically unprovoked grabbed a fan thag bumped into him, the fan put his hands up indicating he didn't want any trouble, and then either shoved or hit him in the face. Whether it was an open hand shove or whatever he clearly hit him in the face.

Weird that no other players grabbed fans by their jacket, started a confrontation, and then hit them in the face. I've seen plenty of court/field stormings in my day and have never seen a player assault a fan like that.

What Tiller did was uncalled for and both a were cheap shots. Calling for an apology.. legit, saying he should suffer a one game suspension legit, calling him a piece of s*** or saying he needs to get kicked off the team? Overreacting! It's a situation you sit him down and chew him out. If he continues acting like this then take further actions.
I find it funny how posters complain about being soft, not playing with emotion or fire, but as soon as a kid makes a play and shows emotion he gets demean by this board. So many people bitched about Cole Luke shushing the crowd at Clemson after the INT or Kizer's TD celebrations. Now people are taking shots at ND players for celebrating Fertitta's hit on Ware? The same individuals who complain about how the side-line didn't do anything when Malik got hit out of bounds or why no one got in Decker's face last year after the cheap shot on Jaylon.

Don't think it absolves Peppers for his actions, but fans on the field/court are asking for trouble. Shouldn't be there to begin with, and in highly charged games like this it is surprising that there isn't more crap that happens.
Maybe Coach can turn it into a learning moment? No chance.

Not that this excuses what Peppers did, but what Peppers did is certainly not the worst thing I have ever seen:

Can't remember the year but I recall a Nebraska player knocking a fan out cold for storming the field. That may be an isolated incident though.
