You can never have enough DT’s. I really hope he comes back for a 5th year now being that Darnell Ewell was a big miss.

RS SR Micah Dew-Treadway
JR Kurt Hinish
RS SO Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa
SO Jayson Ademilola
RS FR Ja’Mion Franklin
FR Jacob Lacey
FR Hunter Spears
FR Howard Cross

As seen above he’d almost assuredly be in the 2 deep depth chart. He won’t get many more snaps at a Top 25 program I don’t think than ND.

Agree. Add to it that MTA will be coming off a near season ending long injury and Franklin will be coming off a season ending injury gives MDT even greater chance to see significant snaps.

Lacey is an EE correct? If so looking at that depth chart the kid has a nice path for big time minutes.

Exactly why I think they could convince another DT prospect to join the fold this cycle. Jowon Briggs, Rodas Johnson, and Mazi Smith would be guys who could have a great camp and see the field in year one which is pretty awesome for a top program.

I used to kid Ireland Burke should get an offer on his name alone. Now he's probably the next name to watch in DT recruiting.

Wow that's going to be a young DT corps next year. Only Hinish will really have even two years of experience. So MDT is welcome back for sure.

On a related note, amazing to think how many snaps Tillery and Bonner have played for Notre Dame.

That is good to hear about MDT. I was worried he wasn't back to 100%. I would still like another DT but I would not want to just take anybody. It should be somebody ND has a report with already if possible.

I had started to feel that MDT should be offered a graduate student scholarship position. I considered that his experience in the system, and his three years spent working with Balis’ S&C program would be beneficial at some point in the season. And like previously mentioned, there is not much of a veteran presence in the interior of the defensive line for next season (MDT would be the only senior at the position group).

Now, I’ve started to rethink my original position.

The four returning players, aside from MDT, have had time on the field, and you can make the arguments that players like Myron, Kurt and now Jayson Ademilola could have seen the same amount, if not more, game action that MDT. Also, our two committed players, Spears and Lacey, are both listed as early-enrollees on 247. That is crucial, as they get the spring reps and winter workouts to help acclimate themselves into the depth chart as true freshman, if needed.

Another reason is the availabilites of scholarships for next season. By my count, we will have 86 players under scholarship if:
A) Brandon Wimbush transfers to another program
B) Love, Boykin, and Mack all leave with eligibility remaining to the NFL.
C) Finke, Ruhland, Bilal, and Crawford accept GS scholarships.

On further note, the 2019 recruiting class is not yet over. There does not seem to be many more prospects on the board. Of course, senior seasons will be ending and under the radar recruits will receive more attention towards National Signing Day. Isaiah Rutherford will be added to that 86 scholarship count come Saturday, and there could be one or two more potential commits on the lead up to NSD.

Attrition will happen. But what if Boykin and/or Mack decide to to return, thus further adding to the scholarship dilemma. Some tough decisions will be made, and given the talent and by adding two freshman EEs at the DT position, I don’t think Micah Dew-Treadway has a spot on this team in 2019.

Attrition will happen...Notre Dame never gets to 85 scholarships...

Can Darnell Ewell not develop into a depth NT by year 3? My hypothesis is that MDT would be either 4th or 5th, at best, DT in the rotation for next season. Seems wiser to give that spot to a younger player, like Ewell, or Lacey, or Spears.

They did this year, didn't they?

And MDT plays 1 technique aka Nose. That's gonna be a pretty weak position next year, so if MDT can play well there this year, there's no reason not to offer the 5th year with grown man strength to be the backup. I'm not worried about Hinish as a starter next year, but his backups would be Jam Franklin coming off an injury and was already undersized to begin with, and true freshmen. That is, unless you move somebody to nose.

Does MTA or Hinish play nose?

Ewell moved to the other side of the ball, by the way.

MDT has been a pleasant surprise this season, and I believe he will return next year.

A depth chart of Hinish, MDT, Franklin, and Lacey will be solid. If Franklin was developing instead of rehabbing, I'd feel better about not bringing MDT back, but I think you have too now.

Good news is the decision doesn't have to be made today, it doesn't have to be made until the spring. At which point, Lacey will be on campus and Franklin will have been 6+ months into his rehab.

Cool and congratulations to him on the degree.

So the NT depth chart will be:

Hinish
Franklin
Lacey

Not bad.

From Micah:"“In my time at Notre Dame I have grown exponentially. Every time I stepped out of Stanford hall my goal was to take whatever punches came my way on the chin and counter back. I got to live the Dream with my best friends in the dorms and with teammates that continuously strive to not only make themselves better, but to make others around them better as well. I thank God for allowing me to experience my lowest lows at ND and I thank him for granting me my highest highs. To every student and teammate that I call family, you know who you are, I thank God for what you have brought into my life and I will never take that for granted. You all know how loyalty is everything to me. To the University, especially my professors and coaches thanks for taking a chance on ya boy. We all know that was hard at the time. I’ll still be the same kid from THE BROOK with a pair of beats on his head, a song in his heart, and a playlist sure to put a hole in someone’s apartment. Forever and always will I Love Thee.”

Much respect to Micah. Thank you for giving your all at ND!

This is why I am ride or die ND. I don't want to cheat to get a win. I don't want us to be a factory that grinds out players. I do think some reasonable exceptions should be made for us to recruit kids on the fringe, for football and educational reasons. Kids mature over time, and environment can make a tremendous difference in a young person's life. Having a balance of expectations and opportunities to surpass what are thought to be limitations as athletes and students is crucial in the development of our society and country. Athletes are gifted with tremendous skills that are often exploited by covering up the gaps with superficial gains that don't last. It's borderline criminal. Many of these athletes could achieve far beyond what they are set to achieve with support, belief and a value placed on complete growth.
