Last night I wake up to a commit. Tonight I wake up to a transfer. I'm excited/nervous for what could happen tomorrow.

I'm guessing he was jumped by Randolph on the depth. Sampson just made mention of it.

That doesn't actually make any sense. It might have happened in the spring, but then he would've transferred then. You don't stick around, tweet pro-ND stuff within the past couple weeks, and then transfer right before camp because you've might've gotten passed up in spring ball 3+ months ago.

There has to be another compounding factor. Girlfriend back home? Academics? Message from God? Could be anything or likely a combination of multiple things... but there's no way it was just "oh darn I'm a spot lower on the depth chart."

EDIT: Just to make this crystal clear, players were on campus and doing summer session school work until about a week or so ago. There was no inkling of transfer then... far from it. Then they went home for a week, and now he's not coming back and transferring. That screams some sort of issue cropping up... not just general discontent with a depth chart.

FWIW, I heard recently from a very good source that Randolph was 100% healthy for the first time in his ND career and looked REALLY good this spring. Apparently he arrived at ND with an undiagnosed shoulder (labrum?) injury that never had a chance to heal until this past winter/spring. The person I talked to said he was dominating starting OL this spring. I checked his profile and it hasn't been bumped since last August but I'm curious if any "insiders" have heard similar things this offseason?

Bummed. He was one of my guys. Really thought he was a steal coming out of HS and I was not disappointed last year.

Yup. Not necessarily "dominating" but that after being hurt/out of position he might have a chance to breakout as a rush DE.

I will "Rocket" past all of the insiders on this one and say I suspected this of Hill and JWilliams for a while. I also had the two medicals on this list.

So many defensive players seem to have found a place, (in BVG's defense that was so positional last year.) I know MH was a tight end, but the same is true for him; everybody saw a clear path to the field for AJ (from the moment he stepped on campus), also DS, TL, and Chase Hounshell was pretty much guaranteed a spot on the roster in the last couple of weeks.

The defensive equivalent is Randolph developing, and it doesn't even have to mean to the "Superman" level, all he needs to be in this scenario is a reliable back-up. Because if it is starting to look more like IW has made the grade, with attitude and the NCAA, and some of the other, bigger guys coming along, especially IR, RO, AT, and then JB, the three deep is pretty full.

And really, everyone has pretty much agreed on this, the linebacker position has gone from one of the weakest on the roster to "stacked." Who could KH beat out at linebacker in his years here?

So it is like KH is between the blades of a mighty sharp scissors; one blade being developing defensive ends, all bigger, and the other a linebacker corps that features a duo rated in the top two in the country! And there are backups waiting with future AA potential.

As far as timing, I see all of your solid points. But it probably took most of the spring if not into the summer for the light to dawn. And then if there was dialog back and forth between the coaches and the player (and family), that may have accounted for the rest of the summer. The last two weeks may have been Hill making arrangements for a landing spot. That sort of makes sense, doesn't it?

seems like a weakness to BVG's defense is that he requires a lot of situational players/tweeners who struggle to establish themselves (or be given an opportunity to do so). Not everybody wants to only play on 3rd downs i guess.

Last year.

Kelly said a couple times that for last year's defense to even work, they would need a lot of situational players, and he inferred that would not be the case in years to come, as the players learned the system, one diametrically opposed to Diaco's previous defense.

He is a kid that would have not played until his Junior year under Diaco. BVG has situational packages and he understands if a kid is good at one thing in the present..let him do that one thing.

Kolin Hill can rush the passer. Itll be fun to watch this kid in 3 years.

Welp

What disappoints me with this entire situation is the fact that Kolin Hill looked really really good against Michigan last year and after that we barely saw him get any time. Another disappointing thing is that Williams, Wallace and Hill were those quick DE guys that could rush and come off the edge, looking at the roster we have zero guys like that now and that is very concerning. We need guys to put pressure on the QB all throughout the game not just once in a blue moon. I want to see that defense everybody was talking about blitzing almost every other play kinda like the year we played FSU in a bowl game and blitz the entire first half. DE depth isn't the concerning part has man of our guys listed at DT could play DE like Treadway, Hayes, or Day. I think what you may see more of is some of our LB's blitzing on the edge a lot more like Bilal, Coney, or Jaylon this year.

I think he looked GREAT against Michigan, he was my sleeper for this season. This team has no pass rush right now.

Really fellas? Hill wasn't in the two deep at any position. He was a situational player we took a flyer on. The kid played in 9 games last year and had zero sacks outside of the Michigan game. Acting like our pass rush is destroyed because we lost a dude that isn't even second string is ridiculous and shortsighted.

de for 2016 team looks not too hot at the moment.

Really? Rochell, Blankenship, Bonner, Trumbetti, Randolph will all be back next season. We have Okwara, Jones and Ogundeji all coming in for '16. How many DE's do you need?

Randolph was my sleeper coming out of this class. Let's hope he continues to progress in that direction.

I think they clearly are all directed at Kolin. Would love to hear how this all shook out.

I actually really like seeing Nyles stepping up.
