Just saw this on NFL.com. Great news. Now get Nelson and Kizer back and make a run at playoffs next year.

you know its been a bad year when we are only 5 games into the season talking about playoff runs the following year...uggg the life of being an ND fan is just depressing but rewarding at the same time

I guess the good news is a lot of younf defensive players and WR's getting valuable playing time this year. Had a feeling before the season (despite my normal optimism) that we were a year away from being at championship level.

that's good news but I was looking forward to watch Liam Eichenberg at LT for the next 2-3 seasons. IMO Liam Eichenberg maybe the best OL on the roster next season.

Just read on II where McGlinchey said it was always his plan to be at ND for 5 years. Says he still has a lot to learn and that he is being coached by the best in the business.

Not if McGlinchey and Nelson stay.

Kizer would be the key. An entire offense coming back still helps Wimbush in his first extended action. However, you are still going to have some growing pains. You bring back Kizer and that's, probably, the best offense in college football.

Combined with even a top 30-40 defense, which should be attainable, that's playoff material. Not sure its very likely that Kizer comes back, though.

Didn't Jaylon say the same thing a year ago?

It doesn't matter, OL will rock with or without him, but it would be nice to have him.

Assuming Q comes back, I don't think it matters who starts at QB between Kizer and Wimbush. I still think Kizer leaves if he gets the right draft grade.

But McGlinchey - Nelson - Mustipher - Kraemer - Bars next year is going to probably be the best OL in the country. I don't believe either McGovern or Bivin is capable of playing at an NFL level so I'm hoping Kraemer wins the job and we get a mauler at RG. I don't think it matters who plays QB, because with our RBs, OL, and ESB + Sanders + ??? that's the best offense in the whole country. Just need the defense to play at an adequate level and we can be successful even with a tough schedule.

I actually think it matters a lot for the same reason we're seeing the OL play inconsistently this year. Returning starters = cohesion = better line play.

Exactly. We see glimpses this season of great OL play, coupled with periods of average play. It should get better as the season goes on, but we need to have that cohesion going forward.

Yup. Matt Freeman at ISD reporting the same thing.

What a terrible first post to see upon the page flip. So frightening.

Notre Dame RS junior LT McGlinchey says it's not going to come down to a "projection" on if he turns pro. There lion :)

And yet I still went back to the previous page as soon as I read the first two posts

You'd be just as confident heading into next year regardless of if the QB is Wimbush or Kizer?

I'm not sure I understand that. Undoubtedly Kizer is the better QB at this time, and more then likely, at that time. It might have the same upside (best offense in the country), but Kizer would certainly provide less downside. Therefore, more confidence.

I'll take it a step further. When they were both untapped potential, Wimbush had more speed and a stronger arm, Kizer had more size and the overall athletic IQ (in terms of thriving in multiple sports). Both were relatively unpolished, but maybe Wimbush had a little more.

Now that Kizer has had gotten experience, I think there is absolutely no basis to think Wimbush will be more effective then Kizer. Maybe he will be, but the bar is set MUCH, MUCH higher than when Wimbush, Zaire, and Kizer were all untapped and we were projecting. At this point, Kizer is the man and Wimbush is all potential.

Yeah I don't get that logic at all. The difference between a 3rd year SR. starter and an unknown 1st year starter is huge. We know for certain that Kizer is a high NFL draft pick regardless of which year he goes. We don't know what Wimbush will be.

If Kizer maintains a high draft grade throughout the season, he should go.

If he comes back for another year, his stock can only can go down. Scouts and critics have that extra year to find holes and fault with his game. People start to nitpick. He also runs the risk of who becomes the latest flavor of the month next year. We're almost 1/2 way through the season so far this year, and no other QB's have emerged to be the NFL draft darling so far.

Besides having NFL QB size right now, I don't see much of his game that translates to the NFL. I personally want him to stay another year at ND, and think more development would help him. But unless he falls out of the top 2, maybe 3, QB's to go off the board, he should leave and not think twice about it.

Besides the obvious - Kizer should be better as a third year starter than Wimbush, who has a handful of snaps more than me... What qualities besides experience does Kizer possess that are superior to Wimbush? Serious question.

This is the dilemma. I think all the game experience helps a lot for most players. But, as you said, it doesn't help their NFL projections.

Not trying to be dismissive at all, but I think there are about 1,000 examples of how a good QB is more than the sum of his parts. Most QBs with excellent tools never pan out, while many of the best QBs (Montana, Manning, Brady...) don't have a lot of particularly exceptional qualities, they are just really good QBs.

If you have the basic tools, the 2 "qualities" you need are (1) decision making, and (2) ability to operate under pressure. But those aren't something you can project based on a kid's high school film, its what the kid actually does in the game.

That's why USC doesn't have the best QB every year.

That is the point I'm trying to make.

I think Wimbush is flat out better than Kizer and will prove it once given the opportunity. It reminds me of when Darron Thomas was ahead of Marcus Mariota and everyone around the program knew Mariota was the freaking Messiah-in-waiting on the bench.

As a Miami alum, I can tell you Kizer in the pocket is the second coming of Big Ben. Why do you think so many experts have him #1 or #2? Dude reeks of Sundays.

And he'll only get better when he doesn't have to waste time on read option and designed running plays. Drop back look WR-1, WR-2, TE, RB, if no one's open throw it out of bounds, avoid sack and get 'em next down. He will kill it.

I think Wimbush is really great too but I say that regarding his HS film and the few snaps he took last year. Just curious why you think he's better than Kizer? This statement excites me as you seem to know a ton about NDFB.

Ok. So what does one do better than the other? What makes Kizer better or Wimbush better?

If Kizer goes in the draft, do you guys think Wimbush will hit the ground running better than Kizer is now or will be at the end of this season? If not, how long will it take Wimbush to get to Kizer's level right now?

I really have no idea what Wimbush does better because he's never played more than garbage time. Kizer consistently makes big plays and puts up big numbers. We have probably a borderline Tier 1 QB in Kizer. I just think it's asking a lot to expect more from anyone. If we get it, WOW! Great. I just don't expect it.

I'll never expect a QB as accurate as Clausen, or a LB as functionally fast as Jaylon, no matter what a scouting report says. Once you get to that level, you have to prove it. Kizer is not quite in that Tier, but he's extremely good--in that Irish Chocolate world--maybe not All-American, but close.

I think Wimbush is flat out better than Kizer and will prove it once given the opportunity. It reminds me of when Darron Thomas was ahead of Marcus Mariota and everyone around the program knew Mariota was the freaking Messiah-in-waiting on the bench.

Are you getting that vibe from everyone around the Gug?

You can "think" all you want...but you, or I, or anyone else has no idea how Wimbush is going to perform on Saturdays.

I think he's more talented..but I'm more confident with Kizer next year, over a guy who none of us has seen take any snaps.
