Stud linebacker with an early Top 5 of USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, and Notre Dame (no order).

Wants to see what kind of impact Tee and Deontay have on the team this year. Friends with Su'a Cravens and likes the possibility of playing together at the next level.

6'2 for an OLB is a bit short for what Kelly/Diaco like, isn't it? Does this guy project as an ILB?

Will easily be one of the top players in the state next year. SC fans want him bad. Would love to swoop in and steal him out of Cali!

Su'a and him being friends makes me think that he'll be a hard pull from USC because I think Su'a will be.

Going to need some LBs next year, and this kid certainly looks like one of the best in the nation. Hopefully our killer Cali recruiting will continue.

I like the idea of us recruiting "true" OLB's. We're going to need guys like that to play Dog, or even move to ILB. I think it's quite a task to get a DE/DL and convert him to OLB (well, at least as a Dog). And who knows, maybe a guy like this might blow up some and be able to play Cat. I see this type of recruiting as can't lose.

I hear what you are saying and like it, but I do think the staff is recruiting alone those lines right now, but to an even more specific degree. I think that because of the success Slaughter had playing the hybrid Dog/S role, ND really went hard after Shumate. Maybe it's just me, but I think there was a direct correlation between the timing of Slaughter's success and the pickup in recruitment for Elijah. IMO he could be perfect for that role - he probably has a hair less athleticism and speed than Slaughter, but he has a bigger build more suitable to the role (and they both hit like trucks).

I know the staff has already broached the topic of the hybrid role to Baratti as well, who also is a big S. Maybe it is my DB bias but I'd prefer to see Shumate in the hybrid and Baratti in the backend, at least initially until Baratti gets more brolic. Either way, I love the fact that this staff recruits big stud athletes at each positions, prototypes if you will, rather then simply going off stars or high school production (a la Weis).

We are one of his top schools per 247. He says that ND is high as it gets academically and athletically.

Will be really tough to get him away from Cali but could you imagine a OLB Combo of Jaylon Smith and Michael Hutchings?

Only thing better would be Smith and Levenberry (but that is not possible) Would love to see Hutching lining up alongside Smith in a couple years. :)

@CaliHutch_17: In 30min the #1 quarterback in the nation, my boy Max Browne is announcing his college commitment.. I Wish him luck and love what's coming.

For those that don't know, Browne will be picking USC(most likely). Also note that last part of Michael's tweet.

Hutchings play noticeable as linebacker grabs Opening invite

One of the highlights of the day was Hutchings facing off against fellow four-star and recent USC running back pledge Justin Davis. Although the back got the better of the 'backer during pass rush drills, it was a notable rep for all involved.

"I know everybody was happy to see that; that's why I did it," Hutchings said with a sheepish smile. "Justin is a physical back, even for his size. I know Ty Isaac committed, and he's bigger, but Justin is more physical. That definitely showed during the one-one-ones. People say we could be teammates, and that's a possibility, we'll see."

"I can visit some (non-Pac-12) schools on official visits because that's easier. I've been talking to Oklahoma heavily, they're in need of linebackers and Coach (Tim) Kish and Coach (Mike) Stoops came from Arizona so I'm familiar with them. Notre Dame, our other guys are being recruited by them and were offered this past week and that could play a part in it also."

I don't know how spots USC has but he would seem to be more akin to staying out west, no? Correct me if I'm wrong though.
