Nyles last year > Joe this year. That's why I don't understand why Joe can't leave the field. So Nyles regressed considerably?

I wish I knew wtf was going on here. I want to see Martini, Morgan, Smith for the remainder of the season. It is a no brainer to me.

To be honest I never expected much out of Greer. But when he's played I've been impressed. He needs to be in more.

When we got him, I was trying to figure out why we offered too. Then I saw that he was the SS for their baseball team, and played basketball too I believe. Just a great leader and overall athlete. I have been ecstatic with what he has shown us thus far!

Yes. He's definitely earned the right to play at least some. As for Nyles he is super athletic and not giving him reps just seems like a super waste to me.

I agree. I'm ready to see him get some reps. Even if they ease him in there, he needs to start getting more experience. Too good an athlete to not be out there.

Let's not forget last year when we were passable up the middle... then were instantly awful once Morgan stepped in for an injured Schmidt. Like wide, wide open space for the RB once he passed the LOS because there was nobody in the middle of the field. Morgan just doesn't understand scheme. That's why he isn't playing.

I guess the coaching staff feels that giving up tons of athleticism by having Joe on the field is worth not having to simplify their schemes? Seems like a dumb plan to me but what do I know? Also whats the plan next year if Joe is somehow the only player smart enough to be able to line everyone up? Would have made sense to get Nyles in there some to learn what brilliant things Joe is doing pre snap.

Please explain for everyone why Jarrett Grace, 5th year senior, one time starting MLB, who is bigger, faster and just as smart of a player as captain walk-on, can't go in for Joe?

He played against GT when Kelly said they put in Martini and Grace because they needed bigger players. I believe he also plays on goalline defense.

That was a year ago and your comment is just about Nyles. Greer should see reps because he's played well, Grace should see reps because he used to be a starter and seemed to be a good leader, Nyles should see reps due to athleticism and if he gets exploited badly then by all means take him out. But nobody is even getting a chance and due to how Joe has played that seems very, very odd.

He almost got to the tackle that Baratti missed. If we only had someone with a bit more speed at that position.

I was thinking the same exact thing. Baratti missing the tackle looked aweful in itself but at least he made the RB cut to the inside. Unfortunately nobody was there to clean it up.

That was last year! We're basically at that point right now with Schmidt where the middle of the field is one giant free pass for the offense. I'd rather gamble with Morgan and get the big play every once in a while, rather than Schmidt who NEVER gets the play and is always exploited.

Serious question: why is he on the team, then?
Because he was offered a 4-yr schollie and this is ND?

Would rather have someone who occasionally gets out of position, but has the speed to sometimes make up for it than someone who is never in position because they're getting blown up by blockers and never able to recover from it.

Yeah, I kind of wonder how much that was Baratti's fault and how much that was Joe's. Baratti forced the cut and....nothing...

You really can't come up with a package for Nyles/Tevon like some super speed pass rush?

Sigh.

I've resigned myself to knowing they won't take him out for at least a few plays every once in awhile.

I have no horse it the Schmidt argument. (I think any and all have been beaten dead a long time ago!)

But if you watched Grace and Martini, they both played AWESOMLY yesterday, with what little action they saw.

I can't believe that the staff is as chauvinistic about players as they demonstrate.

Kelly said that he thought that Schmidt's stats would improve after the speed of SoCal's offense was behind them. He included Temple as a start. Was it? Were his stats better?

Because after all, it doesn't matter if Schmidt is or isn't a liability, really, does it? It only matters if other teams perceive it, and spend resources attacking him. And burying him. (Because any defense, especially BVG's, is vulnerable to neutralizing the middle.)

BVG's defense unravels when one player is not where he needs to be, or is not able to perform his assignment. We saw that last night when Romeo and KeiVarae both crashed down, and Temple exploited that mistake for 25 yards.

It has become too much of a pattern. Our middle is getting exploited regularly. Something needs fixing.

I like Joe Schmidt think he is a smart dude. He doesn't have the athletic ability to be on the field. He was damn near offsides twice last night blitzing (which was perfect timing) but still couldnt get to the Qb. But when you are the coach's boy this what you get.

Sorry to drag this thread back to the top, but let's be honest, it'll be back here by 12:15 pm on Saturday anyway.

Anyway, I was thinking the other day about Joe, and wonder if BK keeps him on the field because he sees a bit of himself in Joe. A slower, undersized LB who is a smart player and helps get people in position. From everything I've read, BK was the same type of player in college. Sometimes coaches can get emotionally invested in players which makes it much harder to see through the sub-par play. Just a random thought on a Thursday..

I guess it's possible. And I would guess it's possible Kelly is thinking to himself... "Man, I sucked."

I guess. But I like to think Kelly's been a head coach long enough to be over that kind of stuff.

I think Schmidt plays so much because Kelly/VanGorder know the defense is susceptible to big plays and they don't want to create risk for more by having guys out of position, so they go long on a sort-of player-coach at middle linebacker, a guy who knows the system cold, over a more athletic younger player. He has done similar things in the past playing Farley last year over Redfield, McDaniel over Folston/Bryant, and even sticking with Rees as much as he did in those years.

I don't always agree with that line of thinking (especially not on Schmidt getting 100% of snaps over Morgan this year). But I can see the reasoning there. It's a fairly consistent pattern for Kelly.

Sucky thing is that Morgan will start the season off next year with next to no experience and without Jaylon to help out. That is a bad recipe for failure. Dumb, dumb move by BK not even mentioning the fact that Schmidt sucks as a LB on the field production wise.

If you watched the Showtime episode this week, BVG is all over Jaylon to step up and be that vocal leader. I'm sure he wishes J would take that "Schmidt" role so that they can rotate others in.

Also, there was a snippet when Baratti came off the field from that horrible play down on the goal line and BVG got in his shit for the horrible attempt. I just can't imagine what he says when he breaks down film with Schmidt each week.

I would hope he'll see time against BC and Wake.

I like how when asked BK says Schmidt is playing pretty well and has only missed a handful of tackle. And calls him our clean up hitter. It's like every time we think there's a chance someone else might get a snap, something laughable like that happens. It's almost like he's messing with us.

I was wondering if BVG prodding Jaylon on making other guys better was an effort to get Jaylon to step up his communication and on filed coaching so that Schmidt could be replaced. Probably wishful thinking.

That's the thing. If you are going to stand firm and play him with how poor he's playing, don't go out of your way and bullshit everyone on his lack of success. Stick with your 'he's the D QB' comments.

I posted about this somewhere else Kelly had a pattern of playing one "Rudy" (or "Kelly") like player every year who allegedly has a whole boatload of intangibles to make up for his sub-par athleticism...Rees, McDaniel, gimp Collinsworth, and now Joe. Honestly, given the demographic make up of our team, it's kind of amazing that we've had so many undersized white dudes emerge as invaluable leaders. I can't help but wonder if subconsciously Kelly just feels like he connects better with this type of player.

A variation of what's been said:

BK may also be using Joe as an example of "if you work hard you will get playing time" for younger players. In other words, Joe may be a tactic used to motivate the other guys into giving 100% effort.

I don't happen to think that works or is worth it but maybe that's what's going on.
