Martini has size, speed, and a football IQ pretty close to Joe Schmidt's. He flat outran Navy skilled players regularly. Granted they were Navy, but for a guy that big, and that smart it is incredible.

I would be afraid of Nyles Morgan. Right now, if I were an opponent or a coach. Hopefully, he will figure out where he is supposed to be sooner than later. And if he ever learns how not to over pursue, he will be deadly! Between Smith, Onwualu, Martini, and Morgan, there is serious AA potential. That is why Schmidt works in so well with any of them.

I hope Schmidt is okay, but I think VanGorder has the pieces. We will find out against AZ STATE because I have a feeling Onwualu, and Schmidt will both be out! At least we will run a 4-2-5 most of the time!

I believe he was just caught in a pile and a teammate rolled onto his ankle/leg

So who is his natural replacement, Martini or Morgan?

@ChristopherHine: Kelly said you can "assume" Schmidt will be back for a fifth season. Jarrett Grace won't play this season.

I would hate this for any kid, but especially hate it for Joe. What a kid.

That said, next man in.
Joe, get well, see you next year leading the team in tackles again. Keep your spirits up, help the young ones, and cheer on ND!!

short term this is awful, but long term will probably help develop nyles more quickly, but not what we want by any stretch.

tough break for this team not having it's best leader on the field.

gonna really need jaylon to step up big time in his absence.

you could argue this season started to crumble the moment he was hurt

Thanks for posting!

A little logic and hopefully the venom will settle down on this board

Exactly. The current sorry state of the defense is what we all expected pre-season. They over-achieved through the first 8 games in no small part due to BvG and Schmidt. But Joe was the lynchpin for the front-7, and his injury has caused everything else to fall apart.

This might not be the place for this conversation, but who's dropping the ball in terms of vocal and schematic leadership with Schmidt out? My gut tells me it's Jaylon but he's still young so it's hard to blame him.

And a lot of people were bitching he was slow and needed to sit

I like Schmidt and he was a pleasant surprise this year. But is this really where we are, rationalizing the sh!tty performance of the defense on this single player? What then explains UNC, the 2nd half against FSU, and the Navy game while he was in there?
