Yeah the team is gonna be up for this one. A wild crowd will bring us energy, not intimidate us. Our defense is gonna cause all sorts of chaos as usual. Offense is finding its groove with Walton breaking out. Will be interested to see how Carr plays, that one throw last week should have been a pick six. If he plays mistake free ball, this one wont be close.

If you zoom out, I just feel very confident going into this game and others. We kind of have everything you can ask for.

- Star QB who's better than his production shows.
- Effective running game.
- Healthy and clicking OL. We're now 7 starter-level OL deep (Augustine, Otting, and this grows to 8 if Jagusah is back). If any one guy goes down, doesn't matter what position, we insert a starter level player.
- 3 WRs emerged/emerging.

- DL depth we've never seen, and DL NFL talent we've not seen.
- The best LB crew in the country. Legitimately 4 deep.
- Arguably the best DB room in the country. Unequivocally the best secondary when Tae returns.

Anything can happen, sure, and if BYU beats us they'll win out. But we're just built for this.

The good thing about the first 6 games is the pent up energy to play a top 10 team. Again, we are as good as we think, or we're not really a playoff caliber team. There's no overlooking, we're not playing a true title contender, we're just as advertised or smoke and mirrors. This BYU team is not that good, guys.
Agreed. As MF said you come to ND for games like this. Zero chance they’re afraid or intimidated. We haven’t won every big game under Freeman but we’ve shown up to all of them. I trust the staff and the team to match the moment.

Anyone worried about Shuler? PFF has his pass D after 6 games worse than all of last season according to II pod. Could he be playing thru injury or is his pass D just been exploited since everything else has been locked down by rest of D?

Worried no, but BYU has solid TEs. I do expect BYU to scheme their TEs against our LBs and Shuler, hopefully we can get Talich on the TEs more.

I would expect ND to use Shuler a good bit in run support.

PFF tagged the 55 yard pass on Shuler because he was the closest defender, but it was Jayden Sanders fault

If II cited that, I legitimately think some of these journalists are letting down their profession paying a $10 subscription fee to post slop with zero review. Like oh WHY was his Stanford coverage grade low? Answer they were wrong in a one off coverage bust. Cmon people, it isn’t that hard….

HA. I can still get on board that we have the most talented LB group in the country, and they are playing solid.

But do people really think our LBs are playing the best in the country so far this season? 2 TFL, 0 sacks across the 4 LBs in 6 games (KVA has played 4).

Luke has more in both categories by himself at safety playing in 5 games.

This is the game for the LBs to show out! I think BYU will go after our LBs much more than Miami will.

With the caveat that I've seen a lot of media recently that PFF is sorta worthless... he definitely had his worst coverage game of his career against UNC, and if I was any ND opponent I would target 1) Bowen 2) Shuler 3) Gray in passing game. Targeting anyone else seems to be a recipe for disaster.

Yeah but with what we are asking them to do we are literally the best* run defense in the country right now

*Don't fact check me on this, but I think it's true in raw stats

Agree they are doing very well in their run fits, but that's not their only job. They are not rushing the passer well on blitzes, and they are doing an average at best job possibly poor in pass coverage. Again, our LBs are playing solid, just not the top LB unit in the country conversation at this point.

Add Ausberry to your list above who I would target, he struggled covering TEs vs Stanford.

When Ausberry showed his blitz perfectly late and knifed at the center/guard so the OL slid inside and Traore sack fumbled the QB on the first play, that was a good blitz

You’re fixating on counting stats for the LBs when the function of the whole defense and these same stats are off the charts. If they were underperforming in their roles, the defense as a whole would suffer. The pass rush and run defense is statistically been elite. Does it particularly matter who gets the stat?

The more I think about this game, the more I think it might go like Indiana 2024 where they were talking copious amount of trash heading into the game and were a really solid team in all phases but ultimately just did not have the juice to deal with ND's athleticism / physicality on defense.

This is exactly what's going to happen.

I thought it was Cig doing most of the trash talking ahead of time, has Sitake been running his mouth? I've only seen the BYU fans embarrassing themselves

I think this could be very accurate. Defense is/was both Indiana and BYU's strength. Have to avoid that early turnover like we had against IU. Thankfully we got it back with Watts' interception. But overall that game was not as close as the score made it seem.

TBF - II did talk about this some and TO made sure to point out exactly what you said above. Though he also said that PFF missed a couple of completions that should have been on Shuler in the UNC game but were not. They also discussed these two factors:

He is most likely playing hurt.

He is being asked to do more in the passing game because of Tae being out. Some of what he is being asked to do may be outside his strength zone.

That’s a bit more fair but Jelani Thurman is the most targeted TE in the country. So independent of Shuler’s performance, the ball was going to 45 or 1 (Shipp). It was on Ash to adjust. I still think they just weirdly kinda ate that game scheme wise.

Except no holding back at the end.

Yes, Mentock said as much about that and they acknowledged PFF isn’t perfect. In contrast, they mentioned other instances where PFF didn’t assign as many plays to Shuler as they could have.

I've known Mike Denbrock since he was my GA offensive line assistant at MSU. We stayed in contact off an on over the years and our friendship really took off after he came to Cincinnati in 2017 where I had been living since 1993. I communicate with him a few times a week. He told me he has never given the autonomy to a QB like he does with CJ and that includes Jayden Daniels. He says CJ has the innate ability to see it all. It's all about the trust.

Spartan here, though I was in junior high at the time. I'm guessing you coached domer Jeff Pearson, pro Bob Kula, All-American Eric Moten, and this guy, among others?
