That question is one of those where you need a coach to say "what kind of question is that?"
He doesn't have to be an ass about it like a Kelly or a Bobby Knight, but reporters need to be put in their places if they are being dumb

Looks like he wrote a story about it. I can't read because of the SBT's paywall, but the headline and lead do not look especially inflammatory.


Personally I don't think it's an unreasonable topic - and Freeman himself had a kid while playing college football, so I'd imagine he has some thoughts! - but as a reporter, why would you want to raise it in a public press conference? You're not going to get the sort of answers that would lead to a thoughtful story about a sensitive subject, and you might just trigger clickbait that beats you to the punch. If you're a pro beat reporter, you try to get a sitdown interview so you can have a real conversation.

Unless either A: You've tried that and gotten stonewalled (possible), or B: You are a complete hack. I'm not ruling out B with this guy.

That’s what he does, he asks off the wall questions to write articles because he knows just covering the team as a normal reporter won’t generate any clicks.

The issue to me is questions especially in spring and fall camp are limited so he’s essentially taking away a real question he or someone else could ask

I’m not saying pre-determined articles that aren’t Xs and Os are off limits, but also just the way he asks it is weird. Like Sampson often does the same thing in principle and the question and way it’s asked are just so different.

I could be wrong, but Bernardino strikes me as a journeyman reporter who tends to wear out his welcome everywhere he goes. Maybe he was better in his prime as he often reflects on his days of covering the Dolphins while in Miami. I bet Noie does his best to tolerate him but is embarrassed by him when he’s around his peers from the other outlets that have been on the ND beat as long as he has.

I found the Goolsby show audio informative (listened to the first two position groups -- OLine and TE). These were several "football" guys who had watched a bunch of film and analyzed lots of snaps. Plus they've met players and coaches.

On the Line, they all believed that Knapp had been moved to his natural position and was EXTREMELY strong in ability to move people. They believed that Abshur ALSO is extremely strong and can do that. All worry (a little; not catastrophically) about Abshur's pass protection. Craig was mentioned as briefly as possible -- as if he was the center and that's all there was to say about that. Both Black and Lambert were described as gigantic and so wide/long that even when not in perfect position were hard to get around. Lambert was said to be in his natural position. Augustine's injury was said to be an unfortunate loss as he is the prime depth. There was optimism for him getting well before actually needed. One guy stated that there were two other guys on the roster who looked prototypical tackle-sized (McKeough was one; forgot the other.) Otting was not talked about. I'm assuming that they all believed that Craig-then-Otting was a fine combination. They "graded" the OLine room as A- at this point. One guy is still REALLY hoping for Jagusah back during season.

On the TEs: They also graded the room A-. Their tendency was to see Flanagan and Flanigan as two monsters similar in many ways. Both guys are "Alphas" -- Cooper because he's experienced leader and Freeman called him that, James because more than one of the commentators think that he's the real nasty Dog in the room. Two guys went on about James. They think that he's the brute "you will not beat me" mauler who can wash down the D-Line blocking (though Cooper is capable of that too.) They see the 3rd and 4th TEs as more the route expander types. They did not say much about the freshman. I felt that they thought that the first two TEs lacked only "On-field Show Me", and that they would both be typical ND power TEs, to whom Carr could get many short passes off to successfully, while being devastating blockers and useful in 12 personnel in line. They made comparisons to Fasano, Rudolph, Kmet et al.

I didn't hang in there for the rest. (my interests = the Big Guys Blocking, obviously). I assume much else of interest was said.

It was a great team breakdown. Their TE grade seemed high to me. But if you look at it from a depth standpoint, Ty Washington was #2 last year. He’s a year older and moved to the #3 spot. 5* Ian Premer can’t even make the depth chart. Reason believe we’re deeper at TE this year.

The episode for those interested. John Kennedy remains my spirit animal.
