“Yet, scheduling complications and College Football Playoff implications were at the root of the series’ demise, according to those familiar with the negotiations.

The latest round of discussions among administrators at each school fizzled over the last two weeks — a stunning about-face. In fact, the two programs were on the verge of finalizing a two-year extension of their agreement in late November, with USC agreeing to host Notre Dame next season on the traditional date after Thanksgiving and the Irish hosting in 2027.

However, USC officials determined that the game date was not ideal considering past decisions from the CFP selection committee in punishing schools for losses, especially those late in the season.

The latest discussions between Trojans athletic director Jen Cohen and ND athletic director Pete Bevacqua centered around a possible game next year on Week Zero, though that did not materialize. The two administrators have agreed to work to restart the series as soon as 2030, those with knowledge of their talks told Yahoo Sports.”

Lincoln Riley and Jen Cohen should worry a lot more about their team being soft and bad + worry a lot less about Notre Dame being too good to beat. Just total cowardice by a bunch of people with no real ties to the University.

I’m ok with this. I was hoping USC QB would go pro but with him and their stud WR back, I’m ok not risking it at USC final game of the year.

Yes I’d think we still beat them 70% chance, but I they’re always a loaded roster and desperate, and I’ll gladly play a potentially higher ranked BYU with lesser star power.

Words can not express my utter disdain for super conferences and the CFP. They are ruining the greatest sport on earth.
The playoff isn’t bad, it’s something the sport has prolly needed for a long time. The way the playoff teams are determined is another debate entirely. The super conferences I agree with you.

2027 already has Auburn on September 25th (Week 5) and Clemson on November 13 (Week 12). If BYU is anywhere after Week 5, that’s a pretty big win for getting decent games out of Week 1 - 4.

Maybe it was inevitable but it is rather sad. With a 12 game schedule the ideal conference setup is 10/12 teams. Either play everyone or split into six team divisions. Play either 100% or 80% of your conference opponents. Makes it so much easier to end up with valid rankings.

As it stands now it is just unfair from year to year when TAMU plays one top half team while Auburn or whomever plays the entire top half. Same conference...almost no overlap

The 9 game conference schedule is so awful for the sport. Big OOC games are some of the highlights of the regular season and are the only way to compare conferences prior to the playoffs.

Very obvious the B10 is pushing this to squeeze out ND + the B12 / ACC to force their hand to join.

It sucks that we need to try to keep things cordial because this series will come back at some point. Because I really want PB to rake that pansy ass program over the coals. What a joke this sport has become.

BYU should be a regular opponent. In a world with NIL they are going to be able to spend and should be typically a 8-10 win team. Also the religious aspect obviously makes it fun as well.

Yep. Should probably play them every other year or something so each class gets to play them home and away.
