Could also do what Michigan does, where they 'retire' the numbers, but have a tribute to whatever player wore it and had it retired on the current jersey. I think it is a pretty cool way of appreciating the old while allowing the new to pay homage to their favorites of old, while keeping all numbers available.

I do like that too but I think the jerseys may end up looking NASCARs with all the badges. Say for example Jerseys #3, 5, 9, etc. would have like a billion badges.

Maybe he is #3 and will only be doing returns and.....wait for it.....playing DB!!

Lol, nice. He may not know that Carlisle has taken #3 and may just be assuming that it must be available because Floyd just graduated. But I don't know the context of Davonte's original statement so I don't know.

I thought when a new player gets assigned a number at ND he also gets a list of all the memorable players names he will be sharing that number with?

We have had a few recruits this year that seem to be confused on their number. Didn't Baratti get told he was going to be #4? Eilar is listed as having that.

I don't know anything about what number recruits were told, but apparently there is some confusion. I only know who is wearing a number today.

Of course the current roster still shows Ishaq Williams as #1.

No 19, 29, 22, 32, 42, 25, or 45

Maybe it is time to get the printer busy.

Carlisle and Neal in a 40 yard dash. Winner gets the number of their choice.

Pete Sampson opened a thread yesterday in The Four Horsemen Lounge, "Quick Update on Davonte Neal". I'm not a subscriber. HawaiiIrish at DomerDomain posted this"

Davonte will be arriving on campus on june 9th---according to his father he is now up to 179 pounds.

His father when speaking with pete sampson referenced davonte being at ND for "three or four" years.

Sounds like ESPN's #8 player is coming in looking to have an immediate impact. His plan is clearly to do enough in three years to make it into the draft.---He is going to come in and try and make noise from the get go.

His Dad's attitude likely reflects Davonte's as well. It may be a little presumptuous, already planning for the NFL. but you have to like the ambition.--My hunch is Davonte is gonna be like having a TIGER BY THE TAIL!!

BTW--i believe he will be wearing #3!

aloha's go irish!

In a 2/27/12 article, IrishIllustrated.com - Neal transfers, Kelly confident , Sampson noted,

The Neal family spoke with recruiter Kerry Cooks and strength and conditioning coach Paul Longo on Monday, according to Luke, who added that his son was up to 177 pounds.

At a pound a month gain, he could arrive about Robby Toma's size, 185, albeit a tad taller, a couple pounds less than Jones's 187, and a lot less than Riddick's 198.

Glad to hear his father talking 3 or 4 years at ND. Sounds like there's a long range plan mapped out. That's good as that transfer to Central High in Pheonix (Sampson 2/27/12)was a bit disconcerting particularly in light of Sampson's commentary,

Still, the seemingly unprecedented spring switch of high schools appeared to throw into question Neal's path toward meeting Notre Dame's academic requirements.

Hopefully the goal of concentrating on academics and off-season conditioning is working out and he'll be at ND this summer.

Someone is getting moved to defense? Find that very hard to believe, but it's the only way both can rock #3.

Neal was apparently promised #3 to honor Floyd so Neal to D makes no sense

I think the Neal family is in error thinking he was promised 3

As much as I would much rather us have a deep secondary and have Neal tear it up on the O-side of the ball, I don't think it would be unrealistic to see him start off in the defensive backfield.

It would be the right thing to do. They have enough guys to play in the slot, what they don't have is enough talent and depth in the secondary.

They both can be #3 as long as they aren't on field at same time right?

FWIW, Mike Frank says that Davonte absolutely will not start off on defense (I think based on what the staff told him during the recruiting process).

The same time we had a certain Fresno boy still committed to us? Defensive backfield not quite as "deep" as it was then.
