I asked Schuburtt about it and he said just a combination of other evaluators opinion, when they saw him at a recent camp, and others they view have gotten better.

Rankings are still not the end all, be all. Don't understand people who get worked up over rankings. Its opinion based reviews. He's a damn good recruit with All American written all over him.

Elmer's dad posts on 247 occasionally ... he posted today very candidly that Steven went to a few events "out of practice/out of form," and he "stumbled around" and looked uncharacteristically bad. Then he went to another event in Indy where he got only three reps (the Elmers were not pleased, after having driven seven hours). So Mr. Elmer admitted that Steven deserved to drop some in the rankings based on his poor showing at these events but he remains confident that Steven's original rating reflected his true talent level.

Yes they don't mean anything until the entire evaluation process and camps and season are done but I was surprised to not see him in the initial 150.

Coming into the season he was talked about as being one of the top OL in this class....had a bad camp or two trying to get his coordination and conditioning back and therefore slated as the #22 OL....wow.

But like he and his dad said he will get back into it and he will no doubt move up the ranks.

I agree the rankings at this stage are relatively meaningless, but when 4 of the top 22 from a position are verbally comitted, it seems that the position might do alright come signing day.

He will be in the top five. Now he has motivation. When he moves up, what will that do to our class this year?

I know Steve was our first verbal this cycle and we all love him for it, but is it really that bat sht crazy to think that our other OL verbals could be better than him? IMO, that's a good thing.

Steve's better than his current rating. He just played poorly at some recent camps. I bet he creeps up again.

He's a great recruit. IMO, the worst thing that could happen is he ends up a really athletic guard, which our system demands.

we cant keep up with the rankings....just dont have the time with all the extracurriuclars steve has and also his brother and sister are equally involved in as many or more endeavors. . . . The rankings are an animal that needs to be fed by interest, media, offers, performances, frenzy, popularity and to a certain extent skills and talent.

Elmer's dad on 247. Steve has had a hammy issue that has limited him, he has missed some events due to other commitments and he will miss a couple more because of a church mission trip and a family vacation. Since Steve is 100% committed to ND the Elmers really don't care about boosting his rating and aren't focusing on the recruiting circuit. By no means has Steve lost focus though ... he is still working out before school, lifting, jumping rope and improving footwork, and he works out once a week with Lomas Brown. He's looking forward to ND camp this summer.

Lomas Brown? Not a bad guy to learn from. Let's see: a former first round pick (#6), played 17 years in the NFL, consensus All-American, 7x Pro Bowl, 3x First Team All-Pro, 3x Second Team All-Pro, Super Bowl Champion, 251 NFL starts. Having Barry Sanders as your RB for 7 seasons doesn't hurt either.

I read somewhere that in Lomas' critique of Elmer - he said Elmer was "too quick" on certain occasions and took himself out of the play. Seems like once this is dialed in that this is going to be very good!

He walked out of the stadium ahead of the team, and you know what? He is pretty tall. When they put more meat on his bones, look out!

The thing that impressed me is that Steve moved more like a receiver or tight end, than a tackle. His agility and ability to move have to be awesome. I also saw Hunter. Up close. He is more developed and moves well. So he "looks" the role of a tackle.

I wonder if that counts against Steve? I am sure we are going to have an outstanding line for the next six years!

Can't post premium articles like that here.

If you are referring to the long article from ISD about all 5 lineman, it wasn't premium, I posted a link to it in the General Team info thread. If this is not what you are referring to, than forget I wrote this.

This is a prime example why it's good to give good works cited along with a quote or paraphrase without citing would be alright.

It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine.
