He lied and it drew negative attention to the university. I'm not sure any superior would by happy with that.
Also, the question on if he broke state law by hiring the girl was interesting. I have no idea why the question was asked and if there is merit to it, but it was interesting none the less.
When Alabama coach Mike Dubose was found to be having an affair with a football department employee, the Alabama Board of Trustees met to discuss the situation. When the closed meeting was done a reporter asked one of the Trustees if DuBose would be fired, he replied "The Coach will be evaluated on "W"s and that doesn't stand for women."
DuBose had gone 11-12 in his first two seasons. The woman filed suit and got a $300k out of court settlement. DuBose "voluntarily" tore up the last two years of his contract. The '99 season would be his last unless the Bama gave him an extension. He won the first two games then was upset by cannon fodder Louisiana Tech with a backup QB and the masses called for his head. Rather than fire the football coach the UA Administration FIRED THE AD. DubBose got it together after that only losing one more regular season game, beating Auburn for the first time in Auburn and beating UF twice. After the second win over UF in the SEC Championship game the two years removed from his contract over the affair were restored. He was named SEC Coach of the Year in '99.
Bama was ranked #3 preseason in '00. They lost the opener to UCLA on national TV. Bounced back against Vandy then lost to perennial cream puff Southern Mississippi. Moving vans showed up at his house. He won two of the next 3 then lost the last 5 including a game to Central Florida in only their 4th season of Div 1 ball.
That UA Trustee was prophetic, DuBose was eventually fired over "W"s, and it didn't stand for Women. He didn't have enough Wins. The good ol' boys in Tuscaloosa made their priority clear.
Really it was no surprise as in '92 Alabama's Basketball Coach Wimp Sanderson "resigned" over the sleeping arrangements with his secretary. Seems she went to away games and they had connecting rooms but saved money using only one set of sheets. The affair wasn't want brought Sanderson down as the affair was onging for 15 years. It started while he was a UA assistant coach. In the Spring of '92 it seems the secretary tried to break off the affair and ended up with a black eye. She sued Sanderson, UA, and the AD (not the one that got fired 7 years later in the DuBose Affair, altough this one did get his walking papers over the handling of the NCAA's Antonio Langham Investigation/Sanctions) and won $275K in a settlement.
Once again the UA powers that be showed that sleeping with the staff is good ol boy stuff. Black eyes are a different matter, at least if they get into the media.
SEC is about winnin'.
I heard that Petrino claimed the accident was due to sunlight. No mention of a reach around? Sometimes on a motorcyle things can get out of hand.
