I'd personally much rather have Bell. Maybe this is just me but I like the way Bell tackles on his film and it looks like he has superior closing speed.

WCAC is pretty stiff competition though and that might make Butler look a bit slow.... at the same time, the entire time I watch his film I think "why isn't he a step faster?" like most elite HS kids look on their tape.

I watched his tape again and I just don't see him being a step slow. I think he will be a very good FS.

FS I can agree with you on (obviously assuming he gets better at tackling, etc. but all kids do once they get college coaching). I thought we were talking about as CB prospects but I now see you said earlier "FS written all over him."

Def agree about his tackling, it's atrocious. He doesn't wrap up at all, but college coaching will change that.

1? 2? 0? Not sure. That's a really good question. I think it depends on the prospect... can they play other positions? I think it also depends on what the staff thinks of our safeties once the frosh get here in the fall. How are guys like Baratti and Shumate used, etc.

Damn, he did better than me. English part was hard for me, but I did score 780 in math. Anyways, with that score you can get in Harvard on a hockey scholarship. That's what Ted Donato told my dad back then. It should be plenty good for ND football. 1200 is the lowest Harvard would go. I wonder what is the lowest for ND.

It is out of 2400 (there are three parts now, reading math and writing) but he said in a conversation with another person on twitter that his score was on the two part. Interesting fact, Notre Dame doesnt care about the third part of the SAT, just the first two parts (reading and math) so him talking about his score on the two part could have something to do with passing admissions at ND... just pure speculation, and Im sure there are other schools that only look at the two part as well, but it definitely is interesting to see him talk about his score on the two part while visiting ND.

No, the NCAA Sliding Scale for Eligibility does NOT consider the writting portion of the exam only English and Math. So athletes report scores out of 2400 but most reports are on a 1600 basis as that is what gets them past The Clearinghouse and "qualified".

I think ND would definitely take anyone 1000 or higher on the two part. I bet they would even go as low as 900/800.

A lot of football/basketball players these days take the ACT because it is easier to get a middle score.

I've tracked recruit scores where public for years. There have been a few with those numbers. The ACT is and has been the more common test in the South for a decade or two if not longer. Most HS kids in the South don't take the SATs at all. SATs are more prevalent in the North.

I would think that these scores would be allowed for exceptional athletes. Anything below 1000 isn't very good. Then again, the SAT is not the perfect test to measure intellect. It doesn't include work ethic and character of an individual. I would think that if Brian Kelly vouch for someone with a low score, he is confident the person will succeed at ND.

Regardless of the degree of perfection it is one of the tools used. The problem with taking students down in the low numbers is that at ND they have to compete in the classroom with a Student Body that has an average test score around 1450 and were in the Top 5% of their HS class. Most are smart and motivated and have 20 or more hours a week available for study that the athletes do not have. At an Auburn or OSU they have much lower Student Body credentials PLUS a low of courses/majors to "hide" athletes in to keep them eligible. Google Harbaugh's comments on Michigan courses of study for athletes. Those football factory also have a low graduation rate/high flunk out rate. It's expected as their admissions in general is much less stringent.
The point here is regardless of the athletic capability of an individual it does not good if they can't perform in the ND classroom. Kelly doesn't get to vouch for someone with a low score or a high score. Lou Holtz didn't get to do it and he had a lot more clout that Kelly does. A coach can ask Admissions for consideration but Admissions makes the call at ND not the coach. Walter Payton was livid when his son was not cleared by ND Admissions. As I recall his son went to St Viator's which has sent a lot of students to ND so Admissions has a good understanding of the preparation that school provides. Nonetheless after reviewing the son's credentials and INTERVIEWING him (ND pushes for recruits to visit ND early so that if they are lacking in area they made be able to make up those deficiencies on a timely basis) ND denied him admittance. It was written up I think in SI, 10 year or so ago.
Every year fans call for ND to lower admission requirement but its generally pointless. Even with a superb tutoring program to teach athletes how to focus, how to study, how to take notes, how to prep for a test and take it, it would be similar to asking the math majors, English, and science majors to compete with the 3, 4 and 5 athletes on the gridrion. They aren't equipped to do so. Longo can work all year with a 800 SAT Math Major they runs a 6.0 40 and has a vertical jump as high as a slice of cheese. If they don't have the frame or musculature, 20 hours a week with Longo isn't gonna allow they to outrun George Atkinson nor push Nix off the line. Yet every year fans demand ND lower their requirements while at the same time expect a kid with only an Algebra I background will succeed in the ND classroom with 800 SAT score Math majors.
Fortunately ND Admissions doesn't allow that.
Holtz used to fight Admissions. Davie and Willingham kowtowed to Admissions. Charlie Weis for all his faults went and met with Admissions asking how can we work together. Weis made it a point with his coaches that when they recruited a senior at a HS they looked at the underclassmen and those that expressed an interest in ND were told what courses they needed as sophs and juniors so they would have the necessary credits as seniors and not go looking for Online Spanish Courses at the 11th hour.

I think some athletes (especially at ND, Vandy, Stanford, Nothwestern,etc..) are equipped to excel in both the football field and a science major. The only issue is the kind of commitment it takes. No personal time. I think that's why you only see rare occasions of guys doing it.

I agree. I used math or science as one example. Take it the other way. With an average SAT of around 1450, and an 800 in math, the English portion still works out to 650. Since not everybody got 800 in math the average English SAT is probably in the neighborhood of 700 with a bunch in the high 700's.

Now consider an athlete with an English SAT of 450 competing in that environment. Same as the math example, the competition is overwhelming. Lower the score down to 400 and realistically what is the guy's prospects of competing in the ND classroom. And once again, the English majors (this example) who already have a significant edge in knowledge and probably abiliity have more than 20 extra hours a week available for study.

BTW, I checked SU's NW's, and VU's enrollment and they're all comparable to ND's size. Small student body compared to the PSU's and OSU's.
