I believe guard and tackle are different skill sets. Think as tackles as widening the periphery, and guards adding depth to the pocket. Tackles have ends crashing down and outside maintaining contain, they need right to left footwork or as Harry H said, a cross betweeb basketball defense (never give up the baseline) and a streetfight. Guards are pushers (against the Teo's and werewolfs of the world) and pullers.

Bog pretty much nailed it skill set wise, but from a physical standpoint, your tackles need to be athletic, long and rangy. I think you'd struggle to find many high quality tackles in DI football under 6'4" nowadays. Most are at least 6'5".

Exactly. If you watch McGoverns second video it shows him working without pads, and you can see him use his long arms and rangy build to keep the rusher going around him to reach the qb. Guards from a build standpoint can have more barrel chests, and shorter stockier arms. They need to get the feet driving and stay lower.

Defense coresponds. If you look at Louis Nix (middle) versus Aaron Lynch (outside) you see the same difference in body type.

Bog, I couldn't agree with you more about the skill sets, and the difference in body make-up. I guess that's why I'd be surprised if we didn't take either Johnson, or Munger if either one wanted to commit. When I look at the 4 OL prospects as they are now, I tend to see 4 OT's. Not that I don't think McGovern or Bivin wouldn't be able to slide down inside, but from what I've read of the two, they've both got really good feet and have the long arms for ideal pass blocking on the outside.

personally i think bivin would fit the guard mold quite easily for us if he were needed there. big and physical with the ability to pull on to the perimeter, which makes me think we go after one of johnson/cochran to help fill a void on the perimeter of the O line with me anticipating that Bivin and McGovern will play the inside.

I wonder if we would be landing all these commits with Warinner at the helm on the OL. Maybe the defection to OSU, although it cost Decker, gained a little addition by the subtraction. Just saying...

Bivin had a interesting comment about Warinner on ISD power hour tonight. Said he was eating with Cave and Z Martin after practice Saturday, and both said Hiestand is a much better coach than Warinner with a better personality. I'll have to listen to it again for the exact quote, but the veterans didn't hold back saying the change was a very positive one. If you want to listen, Bivin is the first interview of the show.

Good to see that the veteran players are open to different coaching.

This. Both are good players and good leaders. Valuable guys to have on the team, and it helps make a pretty messed up situation such as Hinton and Warinner leaving abruptly much smoother. Hiestand has gotten rave reviews thus far. Love it.

I've heard from ppl I know on the team that Warinner was an a$$ and while all the players respected him, no one particularly liked him. No consensus on Hiestand yet

So per espn, we landed the #7, 8, 16, and 22 OTs in the country. Nice.

It will get better with senior year. (Rating services will have to move them up because of Kelly's rep at picking the players, no combined with Heistands ability to develop them.)

Heistand is Joe Moore, Jr., with a more pleasing disposition off the practice field.

My bet is the final ranking for our OT's is all four in the top ten.

Final point in this thread is that someone on or about 3/26 in one of the tackle's threads, talked about tackles length versus guards bulk. In the past Kelly has perferred long, tackle like athletes across the line. He wants guys that have the advantage on pulling and pass blocking, and he loves platooning players.

Even if their rankings dont go high enough, we have 4 :s::s::s::s: OL commits in this class. That is something to be happy about.
