Kendall Moore is an ILB, not Shembo. Shembo's greatest asset to this team is his pass rushing ability. No way he plays Will in this defense.

Shembo has shown nothing to lead us to believe he would be good at the Will. Why change his position for the 3rd time? We have competent players there. Shembo is a CAT and I believe it was TT that said last week he'd be moving back (somebody help me here).

Jaylon is a freak athlete that could probably play multiple LB positions for us. However he's best suited at the DOG because of that versatility, IMO. I will pee my pants if he commits, no matter how likely we are to land him.

Shembo looked absolutely lost when playing in space last year. No way should he go inside, have to learn a 3rd spot, and try to beat out 2 incumbent starters that know that spot well (Fox, the way he played the last 2 games, has that spot sewn up unless someone steps the hell up this spring). I agree with Lax and others - Shembo needs to try and win Fleming's spot where he can get after the QB more. He had a very disappointing soph campaign - we'll see if it had more to do with his position or his talent this year.

However, this kid Jaylon Smith has the game to play in space. It would be incredible if this defense balled out this year and Jaylon sees an opportunity to get early playing time. Man, what a baller...

Jaylon and his Bishop Luers teammates play in the semi-finals of the sectional this evening. They play Bluffton which is 18-4 and they probably will beat Bishop Luers this evening as Luers hasn't been the same since Blackmon (IU commit) went down with an injury. Jaylon has played really well in trying to pick up the slack in Blackmon's absence.

However, if Luers were able to win tonight they would play tomorrow night in the championship and it would seem unlikely that Jaylon would attend the Junior Day tomorrow. I would much rather have him wait to visit on the 24th then to come and visit when he can't spend as much time.

If he is rockin' Irish gear, I say we just send him a letter of intent now.

I'm really happy for him and his teammates, but my God! First Bivin, now this. Incredible run of bad luck for ND recruting, just can't seem to get momentum going.

I am at Luers right now, and saw Jaylon. He's wearing a Notre Dame sweatshirt. That's always good news

It was posted on 247 that they think we have lead "for months"... will be interesting to see what his decision timetable ends up being.

Old article (December 2011) that was never posted, has some good info regarding junior year stats as well as stepping out from his brothers shadow. His coach also added that he could be a great running back as well. Just a tremendous athlete.

Luers' Smith steps out of brother's shadow (video)
Versatility, production as Player of Year
By Reggie Hayes of The News-Sentinel

Rod Smith's little brother looks well on his way to flipping the script.

For years, Jaylon Smith has been known as the younger brother of former Harding High School standout Rod Smith, a great running back now playing football at Ohio State University. This season, Jaylon began stepping out of big brother's shadow. Actually, sprinting out of the shadow might be more accurate.

Jaylon, a junior at Bishop Luers, emerged as the player other teams always had to prepare for on Friday nights. They had to figure out how to slow him as a running back on offense. They had to figure out how to block him at linebacker on defense. They had little luck at either.

Smith averaged 8.9 yards per carry with 52 tackles in helping Luers to a 13-1 record and its third-straight Class 2A state football title.

Along the way, Smith picked up some interesting followers from Ohio State, Notre Dame and Tennessee, among others.

For his efforts on both sides of the ball on a great team, Smith is the 2011 News-Sentinel Football Player of the Year. That's quite a feat in a year with great players such as Luers teammate James Knapke, Homestead quarterback Zach Terrell and Snider running back John Nelson.

"Last year nobody really knew anything about me, except that I was Rod's brother," Jaylon said. "I think I was able to prove myself."

Jaylon talks regularly with Rod and says he considers his brother's success the standard to pursue.

“I always wanted to be a running back growing up because of my brother; I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” Jaylon said. “I feel like I've grown into my own person.”

Smith showed how valuable he was during the state championship game, rushing 15 times for 130 yards and two scores (would have been three, if not for a penalty). He also helped the Knights defense stifle Evansville Mater Dei in Luers' 41-17 win.

Luers coach Matt Lindsay said before the state championship game that Smith's talent allows him to perform unique feats on the field and that's why “the world is recruiting him.”

Lindsay also has tried to help Smith maintain a humble demeanor, and teach him that there is still plenty for Smith to learn about the game before he moves on to the next level.

“He's just a kid who's getting a tremendous amount of attention,” Lindsay said. “We remind him of that from time to time – you're just a kid. Mom and Dad make the calls. He's handled it pretty well.”

Despite Jaylon's desire to follow in Rod's footsteps, he says he considers himself a defensive player first and foremost. Lindsay calls Smith a potentially great running back, and a better “all-around” athlete than Rod, who played safety on defense.

“(Jaylon) mentioned once that running backs take an awful beating,” Lindsay said. “I said, ‘Yeah, or you can be the type of running back that dishes it out.”

There's little question Smith dished it out at running back this fall, carrying 148 times for 1,319 yards (8.9 yards per carry) and 25 touchdowns. He also caught 17 passes for 191 yards. On defense, he led the Knights with eight sacks, had 18 tackles for loss, one interception and two forced fumbles.

Smith has yet to narrow his college choices, but hopes to have them down to a reasonable number before making a commitment prior to next year's football season.

"I think (a fourth state title) is possible," Smith said. "We have a lot of guys back. Everybody who scored in the state championship game is coming back. It'll be hard to replace a quarterback like James, but if everybody else steps up, we should still be in good shape."

Rod Smith earned the News-Sentinel Football Player of the Year award (sharing the honor with Norwell's Klay Fiechter) as a senior. Jaylon has one year left in school, so he has a chance to repeat as the winner next season.

Maybe by then, the script will flip and Rod Smith will be known as Jaylon's older brother.

Hmmm...that's a lot of talk about being your own man and stepping out from his brother's shadow. I'm sure I'm being biased but that sure sounds like OSU might be left at the altar.

Isn't there some bad blood between the family and the Buckeyes about the older brother, anyways?

Bishop Luers won tonight 46-44. I don't have any info at this point how well Jaylon played.

The bad news is that the sectional finale is scheduled for tomorrow night.

There is a possibility of good news however. Since the Bishop Luers Girls Basketball team plays in the State Finals tomorrow, I think there is a strong possibility that the Boys Sectional Finale will be postponed till Monday night so that Luers fans can go to the girls game.

I will post more when I get additional info.

Not before Brian Hamilton retweeted it and tweeted the NCAA bylaw it broke...

So can someone explain twitter speak? Who committed the violation of the NCAA bylaw? Did someone tweet to Tyler Eifert, or did he send a tweet?

Eifert tweeted about Smith visiting. Said he was looking forward to meeting him. Players and coaches can't comment on recruits publicly until they sign LOIs. Hamilton is just a douche who tweeted about it several times.

Tyler tweeted, Brian re-tweeted, Tyler deleted. The school, including players are not allowed to comment on recruits until LOI. I believe there is some exception built in if the recruit is family to a player, but off course that doesn't apply. Minor secondary violation. I'm sure Tyler will get smacked around a bit by BK, but no big deal in the scheme of things.
