Interesting factoid of the night... I heard this said by Louis Nix the other day, but apparently the Facebook group (read: a couple idiot posters in there) had a serious negative impact on recruiting of at least one guy last year and maybe multiple. Who those guys are or might be is beyond the point (although it's not too hard to figure out), but someone "high up" at ND requested that no 2013 recruits be added to the group and that was passed on by Big Lou.

The interesting part is that Steve Elmer was in the group, so one of the mods removed him to comply with the request from on high, and then he rejoined and was talking with some people... and then had to leave again.

The moral of the story? For the billionth time, social networking inflicts more harm than good... and is just an utter mess that should be avoided. Be smart; don't be NDNation.

That thing turned into a joke obviously. I sent quite a few private messages to the so called "fans" in that group telling them to knock off the bashing and they all said the same thing back. No recruits read it and no one cares because its the internet. Some people are just clueless.

The unfortunate thing about the whole situation is the people that could potentially have a positive impact on the recruits are smart enough (and not creepy) to avoid contacting the recruits via social media. That leaves the worst of our fanbase making most of the contact.

Bingo. It only takes one idiot, and there are about a billion of them on the internet at any one time.

I understand where everyone is coming from but if a handful of fans on the internet effect your decision. Then they probably never had THAT much interest in Notre Dame.

Coaches, playing time, education, the team, etc should play a bigger role than some people you will probably never meet, ever in your life. Just my honest opinion.

I saw that the other day.. I've lobbied to have that group closed but Tee is set on keeping it open.

I believe he gave control of it to some other dude and he has claimed to keep the 13' recruits out and keep it positive.

It does get out of control in there and I constantly find myself in a battle of damage control. The older we get the younger the recruits get and the more social media becomes an important aspect in their outlooks on life. A group of this nature can absolutely have a negative effect on a 17 yr old recruit.

We have kids these days who have commited suicide because of things said about them on facebook, I'd say without a doubt this group could effect a recruits decision.

could someone give me a summary as to what this group is and what happened?

Tee started a group on facebook for himself, Deontay, Baratti and some of the other 12' recruits. He then started accepting fans into the group and of course the recruiting roller coaster started with players either de-committing or taking visits. As soon as that started a lot of the fans on there started freaking out about all the recruits, asking ridiculous questions to the players and then eventually bashing some of them. The Deontay flip was especially horrific. Darby's process was also ugly.

It has an impact on their decision when people continually bash the kid and his family. Sure it comes with the territory but also they are 17-18 yr old kids. Every school has bad fans, its just a matter of not exposing the worst side lol

im cool with talking to guys my age who happen to be going to play football at a school i like, but as a hs aged guy, i would find it very creepy to have hundreds of grown men chatting me up on facebook. but thats just what the recruiting process is today for better or worse and i guess we as fans just need to calm down and let the coaches do the recruiting.

Please do not talk to potential recruits.

Let the staff do what they're paid to do

I yell at kids all the time behind my steering wheel.

Facebook is bad news. Not just for recruits, for all. I have spoken.

It's sad that someone would even have to say this. Come on people, use some common sense and keep out of sh!t that you have no reason to be involved with.

heard bits and pieces about the group etc. Good thing for me mmmomma said facebook is the DEVIL!

I'm not shocked folks lack a sense of boundaries or an understanding of reasonable and appropriate behavior. I mean come on guys...look around you. Look at your job...how many things have to be explicitly spelled out to people as conduct they can't engage in...

For example, should I really have to tell people not to surf porn, or shop online on a Federal government installation? Yet, until I explicitly wrote an internet usage policy, I'd find myself in a Colonel's office once every year having my *** handed to me.

Each time, as I was outprocessing these idiots, they were dumbfounded they got fired...can't comment on how people get that clueless...can only say the numbers of those types of folks seem to be on the rise in the last decade...and it is painful to live with.

coming around to the notion that things like this group can be hijacked by idiots, and can have impacts.

I do subscribe to the notion that most guys who would point to such things were leaving / not coming anyway...however, one guy every couple years who honestly is turned off by that stuff is too many...

They should keep the group and kick out anyone who is not a current or prospective player at ND. I think the group is a good way for the guys to establish relationships amongst one another. Outside of the handful of camps and all-star games, a lot of these kids don't get a chance to communicate regularly and this is a potentially useful tool in establishing bonds that can go a long way when deciding on a school to attend.

I'm curious about what Lax means by "it's not too hard to figure out" whose recruitments were affected. I'm not a member of the group so I don't know what was said on there. I gather from WildMan's post that Greenberry and Darby are the ones people have in mind? Just wondering; I get that the main point that is that fans should just avoid that type of interaction, and of course I agree.

Darby. Weeks before he decommitted is when the "Tee to USC" saga started.... naturally, idiots in the group started blowing it up with ridiculous posts. You can imagine the content, anti-Tee, anti-Kelly, anti-Greenebrry, anti-USC.... just a lot of frothing at the mouth about life.

Darby took umbridge to it and said something to the effect of "Relax. If he's meant to be at ND he'll be at ND." (paraphrasing that from memory) then people jumped on Darby... and then Darby left the group... and then Darby decommitted.

And I'm sure that is only the half of it. People on there also ragged on Perkins... I mean, it just turned into NDNation once they let in a couple hundred fans. No matter what way you slice it... it can do nothing but hurt to have your fanbase come off as psychotic and entitled and immature. It had to have had an effect on the recruitment of a couple kids or Lou never would've been asked to pass on the message he did. Just sad.
