Soooooooo I'm kinda taking a REALLY REALLY long vacation spring of 2013. I have decided that I'm going to hike the Appalachian Trail before it's too late. (No I'm not dying) I have always wanted to do this. the trail starts on Springer Mountain in Georgia and ends in Baxter State Park in Maine. (2,200 miles roughly).

So if any of you guys live around or near the Appalachian Trail or live in "Trail Towns" you should let me know and you can leave me guinness and weed along the way. LOL. I have always been an outdoorsman at heart so I'm gonna try and prove my manhood by doing this. Not many people make the whole trip, I believe its something like out of 100 people that start the trail, only 20-25 will make it and 75% who quit, just quit after only the first 30 miles.

I'm sure I will have a gps with me and friends and family will be able to track my movements online so I will be sure to leave all that info with you guys here.

So basically you guys wont have to put up with my bull crap from March 2013 thru August 2013.

Anyone want to come with me, feel free to let me know.

I'm just super excited about this and wanted to see what you guys thought about it. Or if you think I'm just downright STUPID and CRAZY!!!

One of my aunts did this about 8 years ago, she said it was one of the most fulfilling things she's ever done. I would get eaten by a bear immediately.

Good luck to you sir.

Getting Over the Hump: How to Beat the Odds and Hike the Entire Appalachian Trail - Yahoo! Voices - voices.yahoo.com

"...

On the other side of the coin are the people who enter into a AT hike chock full of faith and belief, but lack the ability to recover from setbacks, or the emotional stamina to see it through. It is these people who comprise the estimated 20 percent of hikers that attempt a thru-hike and give up by the time they make it to Neels Gap, just 30 miles out of Springer. That number jumps to 47% by the southern end of the Smokies at Fontana Dam, North Carolina, only 161 miles from the start. At this rate, you would expect that nobody would finish, but, surprise: The rate of dropouts slows considerably from this point on. At Harpers Ferry, nearly 1,000 miles into it, 63% have left the trail, and the number that have dropped off by the time you get to the "Big K," the northern terminus at Mount Katahdin, is 80%. These numbers were from the Appalachian Trail Conference and reflect the 2002 hiking season, but are similar to years past.

... "

Will NDOM make it to Jawja?

How many daze to Springer?

How many pairs of boots does he wear out?

How many bowls?

Will the postal service stockpile "green" supplies?

Does he make it to Harpers Ferry?

Does he make it to Mount Katahdin?

How many days?

How many miles per day?

My Family lives by a check point on the trail in Farmington Maine. My brother in law is a head paramedic and is in charge of mountain rescue teams in that area. They also help restock hikers passing through the area with food and a hot shower . Mike Senical is his name so if you need anything or have any questions Pm me and I will give you his info.

Maine is a beautiful place to go visit. I have climbed Tumbledown Mountain in Maine and it was great. Good luck NDOM and may the Luck OF the Irish be with you on your journey.

Putting the over under right now at 45

You're fired from vbookie status. If NDOM hiked the entire trail, it would take him over 5 months (if he is a good hiker). Even if he chose to do a section of it, say 150 miles of it, he would be gone for over a week. So, what i'm saying is... 45 bowls wouldn't last long. hehe.

@NDOM - May I suggest one piece of equipment that I have found essential in my outdoor travels.

Not only can it save your life (well... at least save you from guardia), but it lets you keep your pack light. Which on long hikes, is essential. Especially if you are packing a pound of ganja.

Good luck, buddy.

It will be the greatest trip you will ever take and you will remember it the rest of your life. My nephew hiked the AP from May through Sept 2009. He took over 1000 photo's on the trip, and he spoke to the family for two full days about his adventure plese be careful of mother nature's nasty suprises (poison snakes, bears, and wild hogs) and God's speed and enjoy the absolute beauty this part of the country has to offer.....

Awesome! I'm planning a hike on the Chilkoot Trail ( AKA Yukon) next year, it's only 33 miles. I'd love to attempt the Appalachian Trail but unfortunately I'm a workin man still.
I look forward to watching your progress and hope you make the whole journey. Safe travels bud!

Ironically, I just had a test over the pharmacology of infectious disease this morning. I would suggest you talk to a physician and get a prescription for two drugs to take care of any travelers diarrhea you may encounter, 1) a flouroquinolone antibiotic and 2) loperomide.

Best of luck NDOM, that sounds like an adventure of a lifetime. I do quite a bit of hiking back home in NM, but I have never been gone for more than a week. I seriously cannot imagine that trip. Goodluck and Godspeed!

Not that it was anything close to taking on the entirety of the AT, my (now ex) wife and I spent a week hiking Isle Royale in Lake Superior on our honeymoon. Friends of ours sent us on our merry way by using a Seal-A-Meal thingy to package Brandy, Amaretto, Kahlua and other goodies. I wish that they had concentrated a little more on scotch and bourbon, but their donation was much appreciated at the end of an eight to ten hour hike.

No glass bottles and the empty plastic pouches were light and easy to pack out.

Good luck ... Keep On Truckin'!

Watch out for poison ivy. Only a few snakes to worry about. Timber rattlers and mocs around streams in isolated areas. Keep all food in closed containers to eliminate odors (bears). Keep several pairs of good socks and treat blisters asap. Keep hydrated and do not take risks that are not needed. I hunt and fish along the trail in Va,Tn, and NC. You will find several small shelters to sleep in these areas. I lived in Vt for a while and found a guy wandering around at 11pm one night in maybe July. He was in bad shape. Make sure to take what you need and be safe. Also take a cell phone and keep it off until needed. If you need anything when you reach Va. give me a call. Call Info to get my number. Donnie Hoss, Bristol Virginia. I will meet you for supplies if needed.
