One of the key elements of recruiting is balance, genuine balance. We could have 4 4/5 star QB's or TE's on the roster. If they all come in in the same class or in back-to-back classes, then you face the task of having to essentially over-recruit a position every few years. I have to believe BK thought Atkinson was ready to see the field this year or he wouldn't have put him in a game. I think he'll be playing some from here on out (or at least certainly in well-decided games). But I also kind of think by playing Atkinson, BK is kind of trying to ease some of the burden of having to over-recruit DB's in a few years. Just think, all of us expect Tee and Ronald to play next year as true frosh (either as DB's or on special teams), so if Josh Atkinson did not play this year (and Jalen Brown does not), BK would lose 4 corners off one squad 5 years from now (and DB Hardy is already missing this year too).
I, like many, seriously questioned Kelly's ability to recruit big time talent when he got the ND job. That was really my only hold up with the guy. So far he has proven that he will definitely be able to recruit big time talent and at a big time level. I do have a little concern still though (and all this was kind of talked about during "Schuttgate" this summer) about some of the balance in numbers at some specific positions he is juggling. I know some of it is beyond his control, dictated by what he inherited, shown by glaring needs, etc., so I'm not ripping Coach Kelly or claiming he doesn't know what he's doing. I do think, though, that positions like DB and DL are worth monitoring over the next several years and hoping we don't really get in crisis mode where we HAVE to get 4-6 guys in one position grouping in a single recruiting cycle. That could cause major problems.
