I cannot agree with Kelly wasting kids eligibility like Hounsell and Josh A. Hounsell is a kid that would likely be a great 5th year type guy.

Why not play Hafis, Cwynar or even Kona??

Because he's going to have to play next season.

You need to give him experience.

We have depth coming in.

What do Hafis, Cwynar, or Kona have to do with Josh?

Sounded like Hounshell also just played his way onto the field. He's not getting token time...he's getting it because he deserves it.

Wasting eligibility is a worry when you can't recruit. Using eligibility is fine if you can fill 20-25 recruit classes year in year out. Kelly obviously believes he can.

Hey Beaver,
So did Charlie Weis, but that bit him in the backside. Trust me, one bad season and we will be clawing and scratching for kids.

I agree. I suppose I have less of a problem with burning redshirts on DB's and DL since we seem to have a plethora of commits at those positions and there have been plenty of discussions around here about how we're gonna get everyone to play.

My question is does this mean Josh Atkinson is ahead of Jalen Brown? I was under the impression that Jalen Brown was the better prospect...

They only reason I'm okay with so many freshman getting play is that Kelly is doing a great job of recruiting depth.

1. Brian Kelly will never have a bad season at Notre Dame. Last year - 8 wins and a bowl victory - is the worst season he will ever have here. I will bet my house on this.

2. Notre Dame always gets good recruits if the staff tries even a little bit. We're not Missouri.

Some of you people really don't deserve the team we're going to get in the years to come.

Also, as a previous poster asked - WHEN exactly did this bite Weis in the ***? Weis only lasted 5 years, and his whole first class were busts anyway.

One of the key elements of recruiting is balance, genuine balance. We could have 4 4/5 star QB's or TE's on the roster. If they all come in in the same class or in back-to-back classes, then you face the task of having to essentially over-recruit a position every few years. I have to believe BK thought Atkinson was ready to see the field this year or he wouldn't have put him in a game. I think he'll be playing some from here on out (or at least certainly in well-decided games). But I also kind of think by playing Atkinson, BK is kind of trying to ease some of the burden of having to over-recruit DB's in a few years. Just think, all of us expect Tee and Ronald to play next year as true frosh (either as DB's or on special teams), so if Josh Atkinson did not play this year (and Jalen Brown does not), BK would lose 4 corners off one squad 5 years from now (and DB Hardy is already missing this year too).

I, like many, seriously questioned Kelly's ability to recruit big time talent when he got the ND job. That was really my only hold up with the guy. So far he has proven that he will definitely be able to recruit big time talent and at a big time level. I do have a little concern still though (and all this was kind of talked about during "Schuttgate" this summer) about some of the balance in numbers at some specific positions he is juggling. I know some of it is beyond his control, dictated by what he inherited, shown by glaring needs, etc., so I'm not ripping Coach Kelly or claiming he doesn't know what he's doing. I do think, though, that positions like DB and DL are worth monitoring over the next several years and hoping we don't really get in crisis mode where we HAVE to get 4-6 guys in one position grouping in a single recruiting cycle. That could cause major problems.

From BGI article on younger players:

“Josh Atkinson is one of the most aggressive guys, reminds me a lot of Gary Gray and RJ Blanton,” Cooks said.

He goes on to talk about how confident he is and how he will do anything you ask him to do.

I hope he plays better then he did

If Josh enjoys the same kind of success that Gary Gray has, we should all be grateful.

Your posts over the last couple days have started reaching dangerous levels of derpitude. Might wanna slow down a bit.

Thats the problem with alot of people on here you over evaluate players. Gary is not a good CB. No need to sugar coat it. He was by far the worse starting player on this team.

This an idiotic post, and a prime example of why you need to slow down with the derp.

He had some rough spots at the beginning of the year, but he's been very consistent for us over the last two seasons. We're going to miss him next year as our inexperienced DBs are blowing coverages.

One of the young guys are going to step up and and be a play maker and make all you Gary believers forget about him.

This is coming from the same guy that said Urban's players at tOSU have more allegiance to him than ND's players do to Kelly.. I think someone has hacked this kids computer b/c I don't recall his previous posts being so off...

Probably one of the best ways to stay in shape during the offseason is track. Great to see them active like that.
