I thought coaches could not comment on recruits prior to signing day?

By NCAA bylaws they can't comment on a specific recruit, name him, or say something like "# so and so at PS 12". If the quote was accurate Myles did the same thing Weis, Kelly and dozens of other coaches have done to handled such questions raised by the media.

I suspect yesterday he had a bunch of specific, non-printable comments. The quote handled it well.

I'm curious why ND recruited Kiel. I know he's a stud recruit but from what little I know about him Gunnar's a pro style pocket passer and not the kind of athletic scrambler that Kelly is looking for to run the spread. Is Gunnar just a bigger more talented version of Tommy Rees or am I missing something?

At the very least, Kiel should help ND's chances with other high profile recruits.

Funny comment made after Fortuna's article about Kiel committing to ND.

From what I saw of Rees last year, Kiel will be caught up before spring practice begins. Now it's up to Kelly to recognize it.

Wrong. Think of Dayne Crist, but more accurate.

Gunner's definitely more athletic than Crist was. He's closer to Hendrix athletically.

In his film he reminds me a bit of Andrew Luck as a runner (who, remember, was rated LOWER than Crist. crazy to think of now). Thickly built guy with decent speed who can finish off a run. I think he is great for our offense. Great arm, can make quick decisions and deliver on time, but still a good enough runner to make teams pay if they drop 8 on him.

Gunner played a spread type offense in highschool, so although he wont be bursting with speed, im sure he has the ability to make runs and extend plays , which kelly mentions alot for what he wants in a QB

I am not sure where to start with this... You don't know why our staff would pursue the #1 QB in the country? Did you watch our QB play this year? A bigger Tommy Rees? What? Don't compare any big time QB recruit to Tommy Rees... they are on different planets in regards to talent levels...

Kiel ran a spread offense in high school where he ran very effectively out of. Services rate out QB prospects on what their bigger strength is (ie Passing=Pro/Running=Dual Threat), so being rated as a Pro-Style is not saying that they cant run, just that they better at throwing the ball. There is no better fit for our offense than Gunner Kiel.

You obviously haven't watched the tape, so go watch it and report back to us...

Every analyst I have ever watched or heard on the radio say the same thing, got to have two things in college to get to the trophy, great defense and QB. Kelly is building on both and that attracts other good ball players. This should make for interesting QB competition in a few weeks!!!!!!!

This is AWESOME...I feel like it's Christmas all over again and we just unwrapped a shiny new present! Fan-f'ing'tastic!

Extra cool points because my son's name is Gunnar (spelled different that Gunner Kiel, but still)! Sweet!

Probably the same "He's a prima donna, he wants attention, what a flake" bullshit that's been said about him in the past few days.

Actually, they unanimously said that they understood how hard it was for a 17-18 year old to make decisions.

What'd they say?

Kiel's next transfer will be to the CFL because he won't like playing for "the Coach" at Notre Dame when he starts turning red and spitting and calling him everything but the son of god.

Notre Dame needs Kiel more than Kiel needs Notre Dame because Notre Dame is a little challenged when it comes to talent right now.

(paraphrased) Need More?

Edited to be more accurate.

Sounds like bulletin board material to me. In particular (and just to name a few that immediately come to mind), I can't see the d-line guys from last year, Greenberry and Shepard being too enamored with stuff like that.

If those idiots visited IE, they'd know we've taken care of that part for Kelly.
