I think you guys should take the 2-sports with a grain of salt... for now. I remember a QB we have on the roster that said he'd be playing bball, too. He's not. Things change when you find out how demanding college athletics are.

And how demanding college academics are for those that attend classes, do their own homework, and take their own tests. Looking at that list of multisport players that someone posted here, the colleges that care about educating their athletes seemed to be missing.

When has either coach had a player that played both football and basketball?

When has either coach had the #1 football recruit in the country, who just so happens to be 6'8 300+ and an animal in the paint?

Cooley and Armstead down low would be really fun to watch. Armstead actually can shoot fairly well

I have seen several athletes do their "major" sport in the fall, and then pick up basketball in the winter. In none of those cases did the player join the basketball team until after the fall sport's season ended. The "football" coach in such cases must be willing to put up with his player missing out on normal January through March football activities --- not usually a horrible burden as the player is doing a heckuva lot of "conditioning" on the BBall court. The basketball coach however has to put up with a lot more, as this person isn't even integrated into the team until after the holidays.

The success of this arrangement is highly dependent upon the two-sport athlete, beyond normal participation ways. This person has to have a great "teammate" personality, in that they are willing to sit and wait their proper chance to get on the floor, after they've shown not only the coach but their teammates that they've earned it. PLUS, they have to be likable enough that their stealing of playing time, and even a starter position, is not a team divider in the squad. They in no ways can be an "outsider" nor a big ego.

If a coach is willing to take these extra team chemistry risks, and the player has true talent and the right personality, this can work --- we had one terrific example of this at Western Michigan while I was teaching --- power forward who made us about 50% more effective.

Is Mike Brey recruiting him at all? Other than the visit of course. Like, is he recruiting him as hard and as often as the football staff? Anybody know how that's going down with this unique situation?

Julius Peppers is probably the last major player to play two sports. IIRC, UNC football was better than their bball team at the time. Peppers also stopped playing basketball once his NFL stock rose.

They made the Final Four with Peppers. UNC may have been "down" for their standards, but I'd hardly call a FF appearance more shabby than one Bowl appearance during his time.

Arik and Amir Carlisle had a little convo last night on twitter. Amir asked Arik if he had his phone number and direct messaged it to him.

Hopefully Amir was putting in a good word for ND.

Amir puttin in work-love it!

im getting more optimistic on the armstead bros. you would think at some point in last couple weeeks ND would have been eliminated in full...but YET....we are hanging in....things are QUIET on this front---which is GOOD...something tells me we are in really good shape, especially with arik. just a spider sense no inside info.

Yeah, Brey lets the football coaches make most of the phone calls, but he is recruiting him as hard as any other basketball coach right now.

It would be "holy **** here come the Irish" if Arik decides to attend ND. Landing Shumate, Carlisle and Armstead(s) would definitely take away any sting from losing Darby! Come on Arik, make a statement w/ the Irish!

I still think the recruiting of Shumate will help us in more then just his 4 year career. It will go a long way in helping us with his teammate Jabril Peppers. That kid is a stud at RB.

What does Hmu mean?

Stands for "hit me up", apparently.*

I couldn't find that Arik responded to Amir asking about his number.

Amir asked Arik to follow him so they could DM, and Arik did so. I assume Amir gave Arik his number via DM (smart kid).

And yes, this is very good news.

Since this tweet isn't getting any love in the 'upshot for the rest of the class' thread, here it is:

@insidetroyRyan Abraham
Armond Armstead got his NFL evaluation back. It was a 3rd round grade. He decided to stay for his senior season. uscfootball.com

Back to USC? Anyone know?

He isn't cleared to play at USC unless something really funky just happened (for instance, they hear that if they don't clear him that he and Arik are headed to ND and then they clear him) so right now I think we all just have to wait patiently for 4 more days and we should know what's going on.
