From 247:

Arnett informed Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley he would be transferring and said he will be “exploring his options.” But three schools he will definitely look at are Michigan State, Michigan and Notre Dame.

And yes MSU fans believe he is all Spartan.

Ann Arbor and East Lansing are both about 1 1/2 hrs from saginaw.

South Bend is ~4.

The problem with him transferring to here is he probably didnt take the required freshman courses that they like ND transfers to have such as Calculus. I could be wrong, but I feel like that is why we see so few transfers.

Is ND even a legit possibility (grades, scholarship numbers, etc), or is that just "a hat on the table" reference?

During recruiting he was listed with a 2.7 GPA and I never did see a Test score. I looked for a UTN bio listing a major but didn't find one. Good educations can be gotten at UTN but that's not the usual M.O. for football players particularly during Fulmer's reign. That said, IF he was admitted to ND, he'd probably have to redo his freshman years based on UTN football academic coursework. Athletes in Knoxville can take Walking as a 3 credit course and get another 3 credits in Jogging. He'd be an academic "fit" at either UM or MSU and probably be able to transfer all his credits.

Arnett was very slender coming out of HS at 167 pounds. The UTN '11 roster listed him at 175 which makes him about 10 lighter than Toma or TJ Jones. He's about Jones's height. He doesn't have Toma's speed.

NCAA stats list Arnett as playing in all 12 games for UTN. He started out as a backup but got an opportunity due to injuries higher on the depth chart. He didn't catch a pass in the first two games against Montana and Cincy. He erupted for 8 catches against UF but only had 59 yds or a little over 7 yds/catch. He had 3 catches in each of the next two games against Buffalo and UGA averaging 8 yds/catch. He got both his of his season's TDs against Buffalo. He went without a catch versus LSU and Bama then caught 3 passes against both the ***** and Middle Tennessee. He had his longest plays against SCA and MT 26 and 35 yds. He had one catch for 8 yds against the Hogs. No catches against Vandy and close out the season with 3 catches for 20 yds in the loss to UK. Of his 24 catches, 2 were for more than 13 yds, 5 were for more than 10 yds. Arnett had no rushes for the year.

His Team Stats
Receptions 24 #3
Yds 242 #5
TDs 2 Tied for #2
YPC 10.1 #6

He did well for a freshman but he isn't a Golden Tate type receiver. He had more route running finesse that Tate but lacks Tate's build and speed. He's not going to break tackles nor stretch the field. Arnett could fit into Kelly's offense and be a solid contributor/eventual starter but not a game changer. Unless there's been a change of demeanor since his HS days he'd fit Kelly's offense better than he'd fit as an ND student.

As far as his selection of Tennessee, it didn't come out of the blue. He camped at UM, MSU, and UTN. He also committed in November of his senior year. Despite his YouTube and Facebook misdirections, he wanted Knoxville and WR Coach Charlie Baggett. But Baggett left UTN (fired or resigned, who quits making $400,000 as an assistant) earlier this month. Baggett was a former MSU WR coach/Assistant HC.

Despite disenchantment with the maliase of the UTN program and Baggett's departure, his father's illness has been widely reported. It will probably enable an NCAA hardship waiver so he won't have to sit out a year.

Sorry but that's simply not true. You can take three hour PE classes at UT but they're only for one hour credit. So if he had, then he would have had to show up for 3 sessions a week for a measly 1 hr credit. This is why no one takes PE classes at UT except for kinesiology majors (it's required for them). Because it's not worth the time. Trust me. I was trying to find something simple to fill up my last 3 hours since I'm graduating in May and I looked at doing weight lifting or something. My schedule would have been ridiculously crowded because I would have had to have taken 9 hours on top of my regular academic schedule. I ended up taking Commercial Philosophy.

I took a 1 credit fly fishing class at UMD. It was my favorite class I've ever taken.

Well it may not be true today but it was when it was reported during Fulmer's reign. Note that I referenced Fulmer's reign in my previous post.

Back then 8 or 9 of 22 starters got around the NCAA Clearinghouse by being declared "learning disabled". Seems the football team had disproportionate number of LD's compared to the general student population. Walking and Jogging were specifically mentioned back then as individual 3 credit courses. I was a member of a small internet board (by invitiation only) that had a number of well connected fans at schools across the country. One couple (husband and wife, she worked in the UTN AD's office) belabored Fulmer's "love" for the learning disabled. She also defended those courses and provided a link to the course descriptions on the university website. I read them back then.

Kinesiology can be a tough major for those actually pursuing a career in the field. It's not the case at football factories where coaches "park" jocks that will never graduate in those courses to keep them eligible. Check out Harbough's harangue about 3 years ago on Michigan parking football players that don't graduate in that major. It's also not uncommon for athletes at many colleges to get into classes that general population can't.

this guy was really big after the combine seen the summer of his senior year. surprised we're on his list considering we were never really heavily considered back in 2011...agree with the analogy of us just being a hat on the table.

Yeah kinesiology isn't for the players. It requires organic chem and other advanced sciences. If I remember right the place for the athletes is sports management or something like that.

I have a dull memory that this player put out one of the worst presentations of non-ND-compatible values in a highlight tape that we saw a year and a half ago. It was about as antithetical to our ways of thinking about student-athletes and culture as I saw. I could be misrepresenting this, and if so I apologize to young Mr Arnett, but it seems to stick in my mind from those days when people were treating him and Davaris as similar possibilities, and that film was a game-breaker for me.

Also not as scary without Cousins throwing to him.
