UM fans bettter wake up!! Hoke is no magic man. He got really fortunate this year to play a soft schedule and slither by ND and OSU.

If UM had anyone at QB other than Denard, they would have been 7-5.

Really good article on 247... had 3 coaches by to visit him today (Kelly, Cooks, Diaco). Dad loves ND. Loves the academics. Loves graduation rate. Loves the spiritual side of things. Wide open race, fellas.

Other OVs planned include Michigan on the 13th of January and Georgia on the 20th of January. Wiiiiiiiiide open.

PS. Go Hokies, Beat Skunkbears!

Always nice to have family on ND's side

Basically what I've already shared. Plus Yuri commenting that he has followed BK since he was at Cinci and was honored to have him visit. Appears his final OV may be to USC. So that would make it a six horse race between Colorado, Rutgers, Michigan, Georgia, USC, and Notre Dame.

On a related note, I hate how so many of these guys we're in on are going to be talking with USC and Michigan who will neg recruit the hell out of us. Mattison is notorious for negative recruiting and we all know Ed O/Kiffin are the slime of the earth when it comes to selling kids on whatever they think it is they need to hear. The story about how they tried to intimidate Alshon Jeffrey into going to USC still pisses me off to this day.

Buckle up... this is going to be a whirlwind 6 weeks.

II reporting the visit this weekend is officially set.

People can knock Kelly all they want but the man can sell.

Supposedly they told him he would end up "pumping gas" if he went to South Carolina.

USC reality ala Dionne Warwick

L.A. is a great big freeway.
Put a hundred down and buy a car.
In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star
Weeks turn into years. How quck they pass
And all the stars that never were
Are parking cars and pumping gas

Yup. He started expressing interest to go to South Carolina and they sat him down and told him he would never be anything if he did. Told him "if you go to South Carolina, you'll end up pumping gas."

If someone said that to my face I'd hit them. What it equates to is "you're a nobody who's stupid and won't make it in life without us"... but it's what those USC folks thought was the best option to keep him in the fold. They opted for fear tactics. It's similar to what FSU coaches, etc. did when they tried to tell Aaron Lynch he couldn't make it at ND.

Anyways, just not a fan of negative recruiting. And Mattison/Ed O/Kiffin are all notorious for it. Sadly, those are three guys our recruits will be talking with a lot.

Kind of funny, after Yuri put up those tweets about Coach Kelly coming to his house today and how he was honored, some Michigan fan tweeted him saying "Wait til coach hoke shows up #family".

Yuri responded "Haven't even talked to him yet coach kelly came to my house that means a lot"

Definitely seems like Coach Kelly, Diaco and Cooks took care of business in the Wright household today which is awesome news because this kid is a prototypical corner/safety for our system. Tall. physical and athletic.

I find it pretty interesting that two years in a row as soon as coach kelly personally jumped into recruiting full steam, we went from having a decent class and not really being sure how it would finish, to **** getting real. Over the past 2 weeks the possibility that we land some very big fish down the stretch for the 2nd consecutive year has become very real.
Neal, Wright, Kiel, Garnett, Stanley, Ekanem, Russell, Agholor and call it a day. That would be some sick sh*t. Miles and McNamara I believe are both ours if we offer. Payton is right there. Armstead. Odenigbo. Maybe a late charge with guys like Spence. Poole. Adams. Westerkamp. Shumate.

I wish we could have gotten in the mix with Brian Nance. That kids tape is badass and I have no idea how he isnt a top 75 player in every ranking out there.

I didn't do my usual amount of research here, so forgive me, but I just wanted to make this point quickly while I was thinking about it:

According to Scout (yes, I know - Scout sucks yada yada, but hang with me because the point holds), we currently have the 12th best class. That is not tremendous, but it isn't terrible either.

Just keep in mind that the rankings are based on totalling up point values for each committed recruit and just adding it up. So, yes, Michigan is ranked well ahead of us (currently #2). They also have ~50% more committed players (23 to 15).

Only 3 schools (Florida, Texas and Florida State) have a better star-ranking per commit than ND (ours is 3.73). Only Florida and Texas have more top-100 players committed (they have 7 to our 6).

All of which is to say that we are recruiting as talented of players as anyone in the country. That is better than decent, IMO. The fact that we are now involved with more elite talent down the stretch and could end up with an absolutely killer class by the time it fills out only further proves the point that this staff knows what they are doing.

So I just take a bit of exception to the idea that recruiting so far has been "decent." I think a better word for it would be "targeted."

I did this analysis a couple weeks ago vis a vis Scout and we actually had the second best average per star rating if you remove Daly from the equation (and I think you should remove or otherwise account for ST players so long as you're only going to give two stars even if they're the best in the country at their position).

I hear where you're coming from. You already mentioned it, but I dont put much stock into Scout. When I say our class has been decent, that wasnt in any way meant to knock down the caliber of guys we have committed. I love our commits right now and think we have some serious ballers in the group. I was more trying to say that 1. we kind of knew this class could end up being pretty small numbers wise if we did not get into serious consideration with some of our A targets. 2. We kept hearing how the staff felt comfortable with where recruiting was in terms of the truly elite guys, but it seemed like we were definitely on the road to being the bridesmaid for most if not all of them. 3. We made some inroads but seemed to have come up short in our biggest recruiting weekends of the year. (Seriously who thought we wouldnt get a single commit USC weekend). 4. We started to see names of some new guys who would certainly not be considered creme de la creme in this class popping up, which usually is a fairly decent indicator that we might be slipping or not where we want to be with some of our A targets.

We were kind of in this same boat last year after Tulsa and guys even started jumping ship. Last year following the season Coach Kelly put his hard hat on and took the assistants on the road to put in work and completely turned the class around in a matter of 2-3 weeks. It seems he is on track to do it a second year in a row, although this years class doesnt need to be "turned around" as much as it just needs to be polished off with more of the caliber of recruits that are going to help lift the program back to National prominence. I apologize if my post seemed to demean the caliber of guys we currently have on board, was not my intention. Just saying Coach Kelly when he gets after it personally is one hell of a recruiter.

Thank you. I've been saying stuff like this for months but with less detail. People talk about Michigan's "awesome" class and then rag on ours... and it's completely ignorant to the QUALITY of players we have committed. If chips fall the correct way we will end up with a top 10 class... borderline top 5. The only thing that will be holding us back will be the quantity of players we take.

People tend to forget that NSD is still a good 7-8 weeks away. Recruiting is a marathon, not a sprint.

Parents care, kids don't.

Does it annoy you when I post this stuff? Parents of recruits post here frequently, and I'm certain many more read this board without ever registering.

I actually find the stuff interesting and think its awesome information, but the one suggestion i would make is consider using different terminology for "black athlete". Let me first and foremost say I am anot sensitive to it, and it does not bother me in any way shape or form, but being out there and knowing how people are I can all but guarantee you if will offend somebody....possibly one of the very recruits you are trying to show the light to! It just seems a bit unrefined when trying to relay the specific information you are trying to share about the importance of education, etc. Again just a suggestion and not trying to be critical at all. I think it is some good stuff you have.

I understand the concern. Chris Brown's father reacted negatively to it as well. I just don't know of a better alternative; maybe African-American football player? That doesn't sound any less offensive to me, but what do I know?

I can't hide the fact that I'm using race-specific data. All I can do is change the terminology.

I agree. African American reflects race in a more eloquent way than identifying it by color. Especially when you are relaying the importance and benefits of education at a particular univerity as compared to others, it is important to word it in a way that will be received comfortably by your target audience. Other than that, keep preachin brother...love the statistics.
