Obviously this doesn't mean either is coming back for sure, but Eifert already has his housing for next year set up living with a bunch of his teammates in a house off campus, and Manti is looking for a place for next year right now. Can't be a bad thing

Wouldn't take that as a sign either way. NFL salaries pay off existing leases pretty fast.

I think Eifert leaving would have a devastating effect on the team, more so than Teo. I hope they both come back.

I think it's the other way around. Here at 'tight end U' the cupboard is full of guys who should be ready to jump right in. They may not be experienced, but talent at the tight end position is not an issue.

Te'o leaving scares me. In a world where our next best option for starting ILB is Dan Fox, we need all the help we can get for now.

I think I'm on phork on this one. I have no idea who the QB would throw the ball to next year if Eifert left. And I think our young LBs are just as talented as our young TEs.

I think that Koyack Would step right in where Eifert left off also that would probably help us get McNamara.

I don't think Teo is a surefire first rounder. Inside linebackers are not in huge demand unless they can play three downs. I don't think Manti has proven to be a three down linebacker in the NFL. Most that can only play first and second are drafted in the third round. Just the way it goes.

If they come back, at least they get the satifaction of BK kissing their @@@ one more time.... Not saying BK's call out before Navy was not warranted (warranted, poorly executed), but I'm sure deep down, his comments still sting a bit.

I bet Teo loves having kelly begging him to stay. I think it would be in both of their best intrest to stay.

I can't recall every play he played, but I do remember Koyack being made to look the fool on at least a couple of blocking assignments this year. Hopefully he would step right in where Eifert left off.

Eifert was a poor blocker last year, and he's still not great at it.

Rivals: , #5 TE, Rating 5.9, National #73, Rivals 100
Scout: , #1 TE
ESPN: , #4 TE, Grade 81, National #80, ESPN 150

He probably got these ratings due to his play and work i think he would show and play.

Guys this is standard procedure. They get the evaluation for insurance purposes. Just like Andrew Luck did last year.

Te'o and Eifert are gonna get evaluations and then most likely take out an insurance policy.

I wonder if Te'o might consider leaving to serve his two-year Mormon mission, and then come back to N.D.

A mod should change the title of this thread...to something "Eifert and Te'o file for NFL underclassman evaluation"

I think they should change it to "Holy Sh!t we're screwed because Eifert and Teo want to see where they'd be drafted...and we should switch to the option."

If Dayne was a miss, then there's nothing guaranteeing that Koyack won't be. He has big shoes to fill, if Eifert leaves. He'll need to step up his game.

I would have been more surprised had they not filed paperwork.

I dont think either will go. I dont think Teo will be happy with what hes told either, maybe that will inspire him to be the leader and playmaker ppl think he is. Eifert would be the bigger loss.

TOMA AND DANIELS are your options?!?!? LOL....what a joke.

And I agree with your second point, Eifert isn't a very good blocker at all.

Yep and Eifert had big shoes to fill when Rudolph got injured and Rudolph had big shoes to fill when Carlson left and Carlson had big shoes to fill when Fasano left a year early...

I didn't say there wouldn't be any drop-off in production. I was simply responding to someone who didn't know who our QB will be throwing to in 2012 if Eifert leaves early. Odds are good that it'll be Toma and Daniels primarily.

A). Koyack will be a beast. Eifert is better right now and would be missed, but Ben Koyack will be a pass-catching machine and will block better as he gets the experience. We would still also have the high-quality two TE set with Welch. Eifert staying is better, but Eifert leaving is not cause for over-dosing on pessimania.

B). Te'o, for all his pass-coverage faults, is still our best. He would be badly missed. On the other hand, this might accelerate Diaco's transitioning of the linebacking corps to emphasize speed and space-coverage. Who knows whether a spread of Niklas/ (Fox or Moore or Grace)/ Shembo/ and Councell might more effectively blanket the field with speed and pass defense? Spond and Williams and Rabasa might develop somewhere along those lines too. Perhaps even Badger or Baratti, Slaughter-like. I might mention that Motta was a HS linebacker.

Manti really needs to re-engineer his drop skills. He is so frequently too deep and not yet turned [flexibility] that the intermediate zone is vulnerable. For that reason, he should return and work that out before going pro. Coach was asked pre-BC to speak of Kuechly and Te'o. This was uncomfortable for him. He ended up saying that Manti was more powerful, but Luke was more "flexible". He quickly added: "but Manti might want to argue that". The "flexibility" issue is exactly what we talk about in a DB as to flexible hips in turning to get the effective coverage, and even to change direction.

All that said: we're a better team with Te'o than with him in the pros.

If manti gets a first round grade then we should all support him and let him make his decision. He has given us 3 really good years of football, i think its the least we can do

the title of this thread made my heart fall into my stomach...hopefully this is just SOP. IMO, both guys are extremely important to the success of this team next year. How would have Tommy Ress done without Eifert catching those 15-17yard seam routes?

...and Manti, well, the defense is not ready for him to leave yet...

its a weird thing when players are considering leaving early; on one hand I would like to see an 'ND-guy' go on and be successful, on the other hand I want them to stay so that ND football will be successful.

When Rudy left last year, i went thru this same thing, kinda. I knew that Eifert was in the wings, and as GREAT as Rudy was at ND, I knew Eifert was going to fill that TE role nicely. I dont have that feeling this year with the TE or LB position.

Manti and Tyler are needed at ND, but I can understand if they leave...

Well, hopefully we'll be experiencing more of these threads every year b/c that will mean we have done extremely well in both recruiting and development.

Lynch and Tuitt will have this exact thread. Hopefully right after they win a "Natty".

It's just my opinion and my opinion isn't worth much but I don't think Te'o is enough of a dominating presence to be a first rounder yet, late second to early third rounder maybe?

Eifert fourth or fifth?
