• The 14 fourth-year seniors, alphabetically, who can apply for a fifth season are: center Braxston Cave, offensive tackle Lane Clelland, quarterback Dayne Crist, nose guard Sean Cwynar, center/guard Mike Golic Jr., wide receiver John Goodman, defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore, safety Dan McCarthy, linebacker Anthony McDonald, nose guard Brandon Newman, linebacker David Posluszny, safety Jamoris Slaughter, wide receiver Deion Walker, and nose guard Hafis Williams.

Any thoughts on who may come back?

can never have enough good offensive lineman...especially Centers....dline is the foundation of the d and slaughter is a necessity-not taking away from is playing but complete lack of depth

Golic will be an Andrew Nuss type deal IMO.
McCarthy will depend on how we fill out this recruiting class.

I completely agree, especially if we don't fill up this recruiting class or have a transfer McCarthy comes back.

What's the argument for bringing back McCarthy? Currently, we're set to be 8-deep at S in 2012, which is ideal. Barring injury, there won't be any true freshman in the 2-deep.

Injuries have relegated McCarthy to ST throughout his career. I just don't see it.

Boy, seeing Deion Walker on that list is hard. I remember seeing him commit and I really thought he would come in and become a stud. Too bad for the kid that his playing career never panned out.

I hope he gets to play a bit on Saturday.

I understand where you're coming from. He's also had an extra year in Diaco's system versus one of the true freshmen this year. I could understand the staff giving him a 5th year to give the younger safeties another season for the game to slow down.

Not likely though, just a thought.

The magic number is 27. Five 5Ys means a maximum class size of 22.

Thanks. With 15 currently committed, how would everyone like to see the remaining 7 split up? Assuming we do only invite five back.

On an edit, Mike Ragone is eligible for a 6th year and has said he would like to come back if offered.

I think we should split the 7 up in the following positions: Qb (only if Kiel), 2 lbs, 1 db, 2 ol, rb.

His blocking will be missed, but we'll already have 4 TEs on the roster without Ragone; plenty of experience, talent, and ideal depth. Bringing Ragone back means one less elite 2012 recruit this cycle, and fewer snaps for Koyack and/or Welch.

I think we should split the 7 up in the following positions: Qb (only if Kiel), 2 lbs, 1 db, 2 ol, rb.

If we're looking to achieve optimum depth for 2012, and assuming we hang onto all our current verbals, we need 2 WRs, 1 RB, 2 OL, 1 DE, 1 ILB, 2 OLBs (Dogs!), and 2 CBs. Sadly, we've only got 7 scholarships to fill 11 areas of need. What's most important?

I'd say 1 WR, 1 RB, 2 OL, 2 OLBs, and 1 CB. That's not what we're likely to get though. I'll go with 2 WRs, 1 RB, 1 QB, 1 OL, 1 OLB, and 1 CB. We'll still be in good shape.

I wouldn't put any stock in Lemming's ratings. Most of those guys were given a 4th star by either Rivals or Scout, which were the only active services at the time.

Notre Dame football: Prestwood primed for action next year - southbendtribune.com

Ignore the title. Second party of article lists the seniors. I'm surprised how many of those able to receive a fifth year were unrated out of high school according to Lemming.

Fourth-year seniors with eligibility remaining

N.B. I added their RIVALS Class Stars, Position Ranking, and National Ranking (only the Top 250 got National Ranking)

-- :s::s::s::s::s: #2 QB, #25 National, Dayne Crist : No. 8 in the class of 2008, Crist started the season as the No. 1 quarterback, a status he held onto for just the first half of the first game. Has played in four games overall in 2011.

-- :s::s::s::s:, #25, 179, Deion Walker: No. 76 nationally in the class of 2008, he has seen mop-up duty in the Air Force and Purdue blowouts. Does not have a reception this season. He did not play a single down in 2008 or 2010. His lone career reception came in 2009.

-- :s::s::s::s:, #12 DT, 159 Sean Cwynar : No. 86 and a former Mr. Football in Illinois, Cwynar has battled through injuries to play in nine games this season, primarily at nose guard, and earn two starts.

-- :s::s::s::s:, #19OT, 182, Lane Clelland: No. 99 in his class, the career reserve offensive lineman is out for the season with a knee injury.

-- :s::s::s::s:, #4C, 192, Braxston Cave: Unrated coming out of high school, Cave started the first nine games at center before a foot injury ended his season.

-- :s::s::s:, #8C, NR, Mike Golic Jr.: Unrated, Golic took over as the starter at center after Cave got injured. He played as a reserve in eight games.

-- :s::s::s:, #51 WR, NR John Goodman: Unrated, the former high school quarterback and current reserve wide receiver has played in all 10 games and shares punt return duties with Floyd.

-- :s::s::s::s:, #13SDE, NR, Kapron Lewis-Moore: Unrated, Lewis-Moore started the first seven games before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

-- :s::s::s::s:, #14S, 183, Dan McCarthy: Unrated, the younger brother of former Irish safety Kyle McCarthy has struggled with injuries throughout his career. He has played in nine games this season as a reserve safety.

-- :s::s::s::s:, #11ILB, 221, Anthony McDonald: Unrated and another player stung by injuries during his career, McDonald has seen action as a reserve linebacker in four games this season.

-- :s::s::s::s:, #22DT, NR, Brandon Newman: Unrated, the nose guard has played in one game this season as a reserve, Navy, and two in his career.

-- :s::s::s:, #34 OLB, NR, David Posloszny: Unrated, the reserve linebacker has seen action this season in seven games, primarily on special teams.

-- :s::s::s::s:, #13S, 181, Jamoris Slaughter: Unrated, Slaughter came back from an injury-diluted 2010 season to play in all 10 games in 2011, starting eight.

-- :s::s::s::s:, #35DT, NR, Hafis Williams: Unrated, the defensive lineman has played in five games this season as a reserve.

My view of this keeps sliding to smaller numbers of "must keeps" as our year goes on.

100% "must keeps": Braxton Cave and Jamoris Slaughter. These two guys are extremely integral to our starting line-up excellence next year.

Pretty close to "must keep": KLM. Why not 100%? Well, we are proving that we can excel on the D-Line with the freshmen [who will get continually better and Lynch stronger, though frankly he's WAY stronger than some are giving him credit for], and we have studs like Hounshell, and Schwenke waiting their turns, and Jones and Okwara coming in. Plus, how will KLM heal? Still, even with all that, KLM is REALLY good and the young'uns can still use the Old Man's leadership.

Would like to keep: Sean Cwynar. Veteran, tough, accomplished nose tackles are rare birds. Can an undersized Cwynar keep his body together? What does the staff think about that? How much will Tuitt and Schwenke fill into the middle? Is Springman ready to play? Will Jones and Day step in? [Aaron and Stephon and Chase did afterall]. What's Diaco thinking about this?

Other possibles: Golic only, and, even if playing well, probably not if the big fish recruits want to come this cycle.

I'm wondering if Staff Kelly's still active pursuit on so many recruiting areas is not premised on this sort of thinking: that if we get a real big flow of acceptances, then even Golic and Cwynar will have to go. If we play poker until NSD, and come up a card or two short, then they stay.

Boy, I'm glad that I don't have to think/worry about things like whether I can afford to offer "X" or"Y" and what that action could mean for good players like Sean and Mike.

Golic has earned his 5th year in the last two games. Prior to the Wake game, I would have said hell no. But one would figure Cave/Golic returning is almost set in stone. That leave Hegarty another year to develop on C.

I can see Cwynar being asked back, and i cant. If we get Armstead (which i doubt) I would figure he would be gone obviously. It cant hurt to have his leadership/experience down there for another year, but I feel his status depends on how this class shapes up.

December will be a huge month for these guys...otherwise I feel like you will see a lot of these guys showing up on other colleges rosters next year.

Rumor on the 4HL that Goodman has looked to spend his 5th year of eligibility at IU.

Cave and Slaughter are certainly must keeps. I think KLM should be brought back as well. If we can fit Golic, I would keep him.
