I am currently in the market for a tablet computer and was wondering if anybody here used them. Two I am currently interested in are the Asus Transformer and Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 due to the keyboards you can get for them. I need something lighter than my computer for all the traveling I do, and to take notes with in classes. So it will be for entertainment and productivity.

Please don't tell me to get an iPad, because that just isn't going to happen.

Thanks in advance!

I actually work in this line of business. With all the tabs out there, you can find several to fit your needs. As far as my opinion, my technician own an ASUS and the thing is pretty bad ***. He loves it. Does all of his school work, work reports, etc. on it everyday.

My wife and I have discussed getting one for my niece and nephew to share. They are 8 and 10. Its not hard to entertain a kid at those ages. Download some movies, put some music they enjoy on it. Set up your the Amazon app store and put together a nice favorites list for the websites they enjoy for easy access. Then you have a supreme recipe to entertain some young lads that may get restless at a 3 hour gym meet or a full day of soccer games! The best part about it, it is only $199. It does lack some storage space and what not but its for pure entertainment purposes only.

Read a review on the Kindle Fire in which it got high marks. It boiled down to the Fire gives you about 80% of what an Ipad gives you for less that half the price. The quality was very good, battery life wasn't as good, no camera, lots of apps (not as many as Ipad but the selection is growing quickly).

Anyway, here's a link to CNET's review page.

Not a tablet question, but hopefully easier than starting and wasting another thread.
I'm looking to get some sort of external storage device for all the family pics, music, etc....Anybody with any input in this area? As of right now I'm just looking thru the plug and play external hard drives on Ebay. Thx

I would have told you to get an I pad... lol

anyway, the smart technologies do get to me a bit... they change my wording and don't capitalize correctly all the time... make my posts here look so erratic

I have purchased a couple and haven't had any problems with them the only thing I would alert you to is that while some of the larger ones have a power supply that plugs into a wall outlet some of the smaller ones (that also hold quite a bit of data) require more than one USB port to power them so while you investigate check into how the hard drive is powered and if it is convenient to power it from the computer you will be using with the device.

Picked up the Acer Iconia around Christmas and I love it. It is infinitely more customizable than the iPad and has many more useful input and output jacks. Good stuff.

The Transformer Prime is awesome. Super thin and light weight with 5 cores - quad core processor + an extra to handle overhead like synching. I strongly recommend getting the key board for an extra $150 - it adds almost no size to it and adds a USB drive and extends battery life to about 19 hours.

The one downside is that it currently has a GPS problem - if that is important to you; but they are expected to have an upgraded version released in March if you can wait a couple more months.

Good luck

I own a BB Playbook. I'm a big fan of the beta OS 2, which BB is set to release the official version in Feb. For $200, it's tough to beat.

What I love: it's the same size as the original Kindle, so I can fit it in my coat pocket, cargo pocket (if wearing shorts), and depending on the pants my back pocket. It has the best specs out of any tablet you can get at $200. If you have a BB phone, you can tether it to get media away from wifi without having to purchase an additional plan.

The biggest gripe anyone had for it was the limited apps, but that's not really a problem if you upgrade to the beta OS 2 because you can sideload most Android apps. (I'm willing to walk you through this if need be, just PM me.) Once the full OS 2 hits, it shouldn't be a problem at all. The next most common gripe is that it's too small. This is an odd gripe because few complain about the Kindle Fire being too small, and it's the same size. Plus, with the drop to $200, more consumers bought the BB Playbook. The mindset behind the price drop was to penetrate the market to help spur app development specifically tailored to the BB Playbook.

The other tablets I considered were the iPad and Galaxy 10.1. Both seemed to be handled more like netbooks and cost almost as much as one, yet lacked the same amount of power. Neither seemed to be more than twice as good as the PB, and I didn't need a ton of apps.

I use my Playbook mostly for keeping all of my work notes in one place, a media device for when I'm traveling (mostly for work and the flight movies don't update often enough).

If you don't get an Ipad then get the transformer... or wait see if you can find the new Transformer prime which is 50% lighter and double the processing speed.

I've got the Prime as well, along with the keyboard dock, and I use it for work when I travel. Works great! Really, I hardly ever find myself wanting my laptop. If you're with a company that uses VMWare View get View client app and you'll never really need a laptop when traveling.
