So, it's been mentioned in this thread he'll be an SDE. What would define our ideal of a true DT then? I thought Schutt was the guy, but Day took his spot so what do I know?

Here's the video where Day mentions being recruited for 3-5 tech, which is an SDE in Diaco's system:

<iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/27370392" width="400" height="225" frameborder="0"></iframe><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/27370392">Day talks Irish commitment</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/irishillustrated">Irish Illustrated</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>

I don't think Schutt and Day were competing for the same position on the field, but for a limited number of DL spots in this class. Schutt was undeniably a pure DT, and since we're already solid on DT depth, the staff wasn't going to take him unless certain DL targets higher on our board passed on us.

I can't offer much insight into what our ideal DT is, but Kelly seems to value athleticism over size.

What I read as to what the staff wants:

Power regardless of the difference a few pounds might make. And agility and striking ability, to buffoon the opponents' O-Lines, penetrate gaps and change the line-of-scrimmage [not just stone-wall it], and the Gorilla-factor of being able to "get-after-it" once released from the [blocking] cage. "Buddha" is OK, as the Staff sees the future, only if he can violently manipulate the area and then run.

The pros offer a different NT situation than does college because they face extreme hugeness all day long which is accompanied in those O-Linemen with extreme power. In college it is not that daunting all day long, plus your number two NT may well be able to spell number one with very little drop-off of ability. That is rarely true in the pros, where outstanding NTs are rare.

Day plays on a stacked defense. 7 players already committed to D1 schools, including all 4 members of the DL.

Warren Central just topped Carmel on a game-winning field goal, 22-20.

Steve Wiltfong had high praise for Sheldon and his 2013 teammate, Tim Kimbrough.

Didn't Kimbrough come with Sheldon on his official to ND?

Went to the carmel warren central game sheldon is very explosive and disruptive, glad he is irish. My only concerns were his conditioning and tendency to at times over commit. His explosion is exceptional, great feet for a big guy. Although he would end up on the ground more than I would prefer because he would explode and not keep his feet under him. He also stopped during plays, he was huffing and puffing in the first quarter. But I give him credit for being mentally tough, he clearly is not in where he should be conditioning wise but he pushed himself the whole game. no question this guy has all the tools very much enjoyed watching him play last night and look forward to seeing him in blue and gold.

He seems fast for such a big guy. Exciting!

I love Day as a 3-4 DE. He's got the size to two-gap, and the athleticism to be a superior pass rusher. Great fit for Diaco's defense.

I know this is a highlight film but it seems like on every play half the defense was in the backfield.

After seeing what Longo did with Nix, I'm not too concerned about Day's conditioning.

Good stuff.

He's got a similar initial burst to this guy:

Yep. "Burst" is certainly the way to describe it. That size combined with that speed...I'm just glad to be a fan right now. This ship is being righted...
