I agree that Riddick needs to touch the ball more, it will only open up more options for the offense. But I think BK is eluding to Hendrix, and ultimately Golson. (but I really believe Golson wont play this year, I really believe when Golson get his PT, he will make Cierre Wood type of impact)

but I digress...

If you saw the BK interviews on UND.com this week you see BK talking about how the QB position limits the play calling. In a very diplomatic way he described how now plays are called which require the QB to go thru a progression. The type of QB BK needs to run his offense is a "call it and haul it' type of QB. Which means BK calls a play, and after the snap if the play isnt there, the QB is to run with it. No progression needed, no procees to complete, either run the called-play, or run the ball. That called-play does not have a 2nd, 3rd, 4th option, it has one option, if that option is covered, the QB runs it (forcing a quick decision offensively). That scenario will cause the plays to be ran faster, more plays per game, and BK hopes it translate to more points. I laughed (in a good way) to myself when BK said that 30points werent enough, they need to score more.

By having a 'call it and haul it' QB, it now means he can call plays with no fear, without having to worry if the called-play is going to work or not, because there is always a built-in backup plan; and that backup plan is for the QB to tuck and run with it whenever the called-play isnt going to work.....a call it and haul it QB will speed the game up on the offense side of the ball, which will allow for opportunites to score points, BK wants 40+ per game.

If you havent yet, check out the BK interviews on UND.com, he was saying some really good stuff, and that is where I heard him talk about the 'call it and haul it' QB.

I would rather not waste a year of Golson's eligibility on a one and done package halfway through the season.

IMO Golson will get redshirted. Just last week Kelly mentioned he was still adjusting to life in the classroom. Hard to be ready for major football when trying to keep head above water in class.

I don't like this. They are playing Airforce. Every posession counts. Don't put a kid in for his first few snaps of college football in that situation. ND has a huge physical advantage. Run the ball down their throat with Woods and Gray. And mix it up with throws to Floyd and our future all-american TE, Tyler Eifert. Airforce can not match up with those four guys and against our o-line... please do not do this... not against the option. Please!

If Fleming can contain and not get sucked in we will tear up their offense. I think less plays that touch Rees's hands the better. Lets employ a riddick pkg and a Hendrix pkg. and WTH let's throw in a Wood WildCat pkg.

That's exactly why we should do it now. ND has advantages all over the field and it should make for an easier transition, than against some of the other teams that ND will face in the near future.. Get it done now, show Sc another wrinkle, and work out the kinks if needed..

It's probably going to be something small to give USC something to think about.

Last year we didn't run hardly any jet sweeps, then against Army we were running them, faking them, getting the ball in Floyd's hands on reverses like crazy.

Nothing too crazy this weekend I suspect, but something for the Trojans to chew on.

Kelly has came up with a few nice wrinkles before, Bennett Jackson on fake punt and Goodman's reverse pass to Floyd. Most coaches have one refine they feel will be big play every week. The situation doesn't always present itself.

I heard Kelly was breaking out some new concept called a punt return...

But I'm looking forward to seeing what it is, although interesting choice of a game to implement it with but whatever.

Two things: A). I just listened to that radio broadcast and Kelly says bluntly that the special package will be either for Golson or for Hendrix...a Theo Leprecat [or whomever] is not what he's talking about. That doesn't mean that he might not also be ready to use a Leprecat, but the "Special Package" is either Everett or Andrew.

B). This will not be a "gimmick". Kelly does not believe in gimmicks. This will be solid offense that he believes is ready to work. He will not view this thing as some kind of gamble. Expect the team to look competent running it. That is not say that Air Force will not defend it, but it will be true offense which could be repetitively used.

All that said, it is a good time to show it to make Kiffin use practice time against it and for Hendrix [my guess] to knock the nerves off pre-USC. It is probably also a good time NOT to use a Theo package, but to save that for Kiffin as a complete surprise. I am also waiting for the Floyd end-around...but don't tell our opponents.

I think it will/should be Hendrix... BUTTTT

Is it possible that while running the demo squad, Kelly had a revelation and realized that Everett is ready to perform on the field?

Who knows, just because Everett was running demo, it doesn't mean he didn't get any first team/special package snaps.

I think the demo reps could have opened Kelly's eyes, but obviously, this is merely speculation.

If it is a QB package I am suprised as to why this game.. why not wait until after the bye and do it against USC that way they can't gameplan for it?

Oh well BK knows what he is doing.

I still think ND needs some plays draw up to get Theo the ball. He hasn't done crap, but he is fast as lightning. Like Forrest Gump...just get him the ball and RUN

Bc if they **** the bed doing it, it may not cost us the game against AF lol. He should ran these things against Purdue

I wonder what the formation in shotgun/pistol with the two running backs at his sides and the one behind him would do with Notre Dame. Wood and Gray can play DE's and OLB's, they demonstrated that so far this season. Riddick behind the QB would been interesting.

Didn't Kelly mention "our defense doesn't want to see Golson running the option again." You may be on to something.

That's what I got from that too.

Someone else mentioned that Kelly made it sound like it was going to be the QB that was NOT running the demo squad.

(i'm yet to listen to the BK radio show... I've only watched the practice report).

But, Kelly seemed almost giddy when talking about Everett.

A couple things:

I think against Air Force is the perfect time to do this. Some of you say, "Why not just wait until we actually face USC? Why let them game plan against it?" One reason has been made clear and that is "Well we have a better chance to still pull off a win if it doesn't work", but the other reason is that we WANT them to try to game plan for it. We want them to have to prepare for more than they can handle. Gus Malzahn is a guy who is famous for preaching "Cloudy Minds = Slow Feet". The more the defense has to think, the better.

Okay, #2. What the hell is a gimmick? Gimmicks don't exist. Offense is offense. If you can move the ball, it's a successful offense. If you can't move the ball, it's not. Seriously, I don't get it. Besides at this point in the game, nobody is really doing anything new. If I brought back the Notre Dame Box, would you consider that a gimmick?

lol I'm just saying, if it works, run it. There's no such things as gimmicks in my book.

YAY RANTS!

Kelly:

“I don’t think our defense wants to see him (again),” Kelly said of Golson. “Obviously, he’s not as big and thick as Jefferson, but he can run. It was good to have him out there. He was a guy who helped us a lot.”

Personally, I don't care WHO the package is for. I'm just glad there will be a package. I love vanilla ice cream and all, but every now and again I need to mix things up so I don't get sick of it...

Does this imply Golson?

I think it will be Golson. BK was impressed with how well he moved the ball against our first team D in practice. That D has been pretty damn good this year too.

I don't think you'll see much of it until ND is up 14+ points. This team needs to prove it can completely roll over lesser talented teams. Purdue was a good start, but there are still some kinks in the offense, especially in the red zone.

Also, does it worry anyone that Golson was able to move the ball so effectively in practice? Air Force and Navy worry me as much as anyone on the schedule with that offense.
