Agree 100%.

There are two major variations in the 3-4 scheme, depending on philosophy. The first is the **** LeBeau style 3-4, with players like James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley playing the OLB positions/DE hybrid roles, where more likely than not they are getting after the QB on passing downs. The second is a more pass coverage oriented philosophy. Of course, there are tons of ways coaches tweak the 3-4. It is really rough to say, "I don't want to play OLB in a 3-4" because honestly, depending on how it's coached, there is huge variation in what your job will be.

I haven't read through the entire thread, just bits here and there, but I assume that Noah wants to put his hand in the ground and get after the qb as opposed to dropping back into coverage? I assume that's his aversion to the 3-4. Well at the Cat, I believe we can do that for you Mr. Spence.

Haha D i c k's first name was censored.

idk why he wouldn't want to be recruited at OLB...if he has any aspirations about going to the NFL playing the Cat will only help his stock, if he's as good as we think he is. with the d line we're starting to pull in this year and last, you'd be mislead to not give us a look realizing you're probably going to be blocked one on one for at least 3 years.

He said he doesn't like dropping back and playing coverage, which would be a requirement even at Cat.

Had nine tackles, one for loss against Gateway yesterday in a loss. This kid plays against my High School on Saturday.

Likes the idea of playing OLB no officials set for ND yet. per scout.

Well I know I'm biased, but it seems like he said everything but say the words "Notre Dame."

I doubt the staff would get nitpicky over whether we want him at DE or OLB. They seem to have a recruiting philosophy of bring a recruit in now, figure out his position later. He'd be a stud at either position.

"Family atmosphere," Spence said is the No. 1 factor he is looking for in a school. "My parents have to like it. I (have to) feel God is involved in the school, and I feel I fit in there, fit into their defense, feel like I can make an impact immediately."

I have a feeling the #1 WDE in the class could find a spot in the immediate rotation somewhere he likes.

After reading that I feel better about his recruitment than I ever have before. This defense could be unreal and deep.

It is mentioned multiple times throughout this thread that he wants to play DE not OLB, so I imagine we are recruiting him as a DE if he is still interested in ND.

I think its gone back and forth because his preferences have changed.

It's very strange to hear a star WDE say he prefers 3-4 DE over OLB. 3-4 DE isn't very glamorous, whereas the Rush OLB tends to rack up lots of Sacks and TFL. Doesn't make much sense.

Seems like we are running closer to a 50/50 split recently between 3 man fronts and 4 man fronts.

Yet our sack leaders are a DE and a ILB. If you're good, you can get the stats anywhere in our front 7.

Our 4-down looks always include an OLB. I don't recall seeing 4 DL on the field at once this season.

That's true, though Lynch hasn't really been used as a 3-4 DE thus far.

It's just odd for a recruit to specifically spurn a position that tends to stand-out for generating gaudy stats.

You could very well be right but I thought I saw some last week against Purdue, though I could be wrong (whisky will do that to you).

To put this to rest once and for all, he is being recruited as an OLB.

He even mentioned in an interview posted earlier in this thread:

Notre Dame, just the education piece there. Education is key for me and they do a real good job with the books. There I’d play outside linebacker and they have a lot of tradition.”
