To be honest, I would be very happy with Eiffert, Golic, and Welch holding down this position while Koyack sits out a year putting some muscle on that promising frame of his. If Eiffert has a good year, he may be even inclined to test the NFL waters, so it will be important to preserve Koyack's eligibility while we have the talent and numbers to do so. Just my opinion though.

I'm not sure he'll start this year, or even next, but personal opinion is he will be in the lineup this year and getting time as the number 3 TE and if Eifert or Welch get banged up, he will be in there. I do not see Golic ever getting any valuable minutes at the TE position, he's a special teamer for life and should be happy with that considering I never thought he was talented enough to play for the Irish. Much like his brother they were both the beneficiary of there dad's and uncle's success. I don't see either of them being brought back for a fifth year.

I think Ragone will get granted a 5th year to be honest. Eifert, Ragone and Welch will play Koyack will probably play. Koyack probably won't see the field this year.

Eiffert was more than successful this season pulling up the Rudy slack in my opinion.

Ben will see the field for sure though

Eifert has tremendous hands, good blocking and stretches the field....Koyack looks to be the exact type....i think he will see time this year, i think he is going to be very special just like i believe Eifert will be huuuuuge this year

IrishIllustrated.com - Koyack eyes TE U. roll call

Tim Prister
IrishIllustrated.com Senior Editor
8/21

It started in earnest with Dave Casper in 1973. From there, the honor roll just continued to grow.

Ken MacAfee, Dean Masztak, Tony Hunter, Mark Bavaro, Andy Heck, Derek Brown, Irv Smith, Oscar McBride, Pete Chryplewicz, Jabari Holloway, Dan O’Leary, Anthony Fasano, John Carlson, Kyle Rudolph.

Today, it’s Tyler Eifert. Tomorrow, or perhaps even sooner, it will be Alex Welch and/or freshman Ben Koyack, the latest in the long line of standout tight ends to come to Notre Dame over the last four decades.

...

Per TE Coach Mike Denbrock ...
“Now that he understands what we’re trying to do scheme-wise - he was a little bit cautious the first few days - he’s getting to the point where he can cut himself loose a little more. He is a big ol’ boy for a freshman. He’s got a nice developed lower body and he’s not afraid to put his face on people. He’s doing a pretty good job. He’s coming along. He’s an exciting guy.

“(As a receiver), I would say he’s in between Tyler Eifert and Alex Welch. I don’t know that he has quite as much speed down the field and vertical ability as Tyler, but certainly he can beat one-on-one coverage, move in space and do something with the ball after he catches it. He’s an exciting kid.”

Koyack on the Div 1 game:
“The speed of the game makes everything tough. I can’t point out one specific thing that’s tougher because blocking-wise, you’re dealing with bigger guys, and coverage-wise, you have faster guys. I just try to keep working to improve my game.”

When was the last time that joker actually posted? I'm far too lazy to actually look at this time.

Not to mention him running onto the field as the ball was being snapped on the first play of the game.

He has struggled this year. We will get a better feel for him next year when he splits time with Troy.

Hate to make excuses for him but he is just a soph., I know I know so are a lot of other guys who are showing a lot of promise but Ben has some big shoes to fill at TE. Just think of the all the guys we have had in the past and they all have practically made an imediate impact from first time they got on the field (Efiert, Rudolph, Carlson, Fasano). He just might require more time to develope which we he has time to do until next year when his play will become much more noticable.

Blocking isn't his game either. Really needs to improve on that during the course of this season.

i watched the first half of the msu game again last night and i am very concerned about #18. i hope he can get out of the funk he's in right now. i noticed him getting pushed around again and the penalties just need to stop. it w/b nice to see him get a great catch, maybe a td against scUM and see the light again.

what's bad is it seems to be getting worse and welch's injury is now a bigger issue than what i initially thought at the te position....

I agree, he really seems not to have his head in the game lately. Sometimes it just takes one great play to rebuild confidence and regain focus though. I think he'll start to play better as he gets more touches. I agree that a big TD this weekend could be all he needs to "see the light."

I hope the light goes on soon for him. I still think Mattingly plays TE with Huermann.

this is the biggest factor imo...he just looks lost, doesn't know who to block and just looks like he is running through the motions....his blocking wasn't bad at all last year towards the end...i wonder if it is a change in blocking schemes?? either way i love watching our TE's and here is to hoping he can turn it around...especially because he is a PA kid :)
