I don't think anyone really thinks of Pitt as being a rivalry... It just happens to be that we have played Pitt the 5th most times overall. scUM is a much more heated rivalry and we have only played each other 36 times total.

scUM may point out the 20-15-1 record they have over us. However, nine games (8-1, Michigan) were played before a touchdown was six points, a field goal was three points, and the football was in its current shape, more oval. In terms of records for "modern day football" with current rules, ND has a 14-12-1 record over Michigan.

I'd be interested in what everyones "definition" of a rivalry is. Is it that you play them often? Is it geography, or have some score to settle?

I think it can be a little of each. I think of Miami and Tennessee as rivals, but we hardly play either team anymore. The next time we do, I'll consider it a major, if infrequent, rivalry game. But, I also do not consider Pitt to be a rival, even though we play them often. I guess it has to do with the program being in the same class and if they are big, meaningful games.

Most teams have just a few rivalries. Michigan has MSU, Ohio State and us. USC probably considers only us and UCLA to be rivalry games.
So, for me, a rivalry is something rooted in history, a game both teams' fans circle the calendar date for and requires players to dig a little deeper physically and emotionally. Fans recall historical close contests, comebacks and last second wins.
