Your thinking of Tony Burnett. He was at a small college in Cali and eventually transferred to USC for track and field only.. He was invited to walk-on to the football team and made it. He got a scholarship from Kiffin after last year.

The article I read wasn't really definitive as to wether or not he dropped his track and field scholarship (if he had one) to walk on to the football team.

It won't work, it would be a football schollie. Goes by what is the higher grossing sport.

I think the NCAA's clever little rule makes you count the scholarship against whatever the higher revenue generating sport is. So it would be football at ND, but basketball at, say, UConn.

It's not the highest grossing nor higher revenue sport. The NCAA Bylaws 15.5. 9 specifies football takes precedence over all sports, basketball over all sports except football.

I think he could/would come in on a basketball scholie, but as soon as he plays 1 down in a football game, it switches over to a football scholie. So if he saved a year of eligibility (ND doesn't red shirt, remember) his first football season, his first year would be on a baskeball scholarship. At least that's how I think it goes.

Correct, mike. A freshman on a basketball scholarship could practice with the football but if he steps on the field in a game, he immediately counts against the football 25/85 rules.

Shane Walton came to ND on a soccer scholarship and played that sport as a freshman in '98 and made Second Team All Big East. In the Spring of '99 he walked on for football and was awarded a football scholarship. He did not count against football as a freshman but did from '99 (soph year) on. He was awarded a 5th year by the Faculty Board so he played on scholarship for 5 years, 1 year for soccer then 4 for football. He dropped soccer after going out for football but had he played both, he still would have counted against football regardless of which sport he played first.

I think this ship has sailed unless he wants to be a basketball first guy in the best basketball league in the country playing for the coach of the year.... assuming Brey wants him. Wouldn't that be epic if we took him as a basketball player just to get him away from USC? .1% chance it happens... but it's fun to think about.

plus get him on a basketball scholly and play football, but your right, that's less than a .1% chance.

This has been discussed before on IE and because football generates more revenue than basketball his scholarship would count against the football team and not the basketball team if he played both sports.

I remember this was brought up when the conspiracy theorists thought USC would offer Track and Basketball schollies to get around the sanctions

It was discussed 5 posts below. Revenue has no bearing on the rule. Football is specified as taking precedence over all sports.

It'd be funny if basketball schools like Kansas and Duke put excess basketball players under football scholarships lol

.... yes I know that would never happen and I'm sure they use their full 85. Just fun to think about. It's what I would do if I was an AD.

wow seriously...that's stupid.

Disagree. You think there's cheating now...what do you think would happen if programs could stash kids on basketball and track and baseball scholarships and then have them play football? You telling me Alabama wouldn't sacrifice a bball scholarship or a track scholly for a superstar running back? You don't think USC would be doing this to get around the sanctions?

Football is king, and teams will do ANYTHING to win. This is just a necessary restriction put out there to keep things on the up and up. Has to be there...

So much for signing a bunch of hybrid Chess/Football scholarship players.

Cal might have taken the lead for him per rivals. Mention schools he is most likely going to visit Arkansas, 'SC, Cal, Arizona, Miami, Alabama and Nevada. No ND

Tosh Lupoi is an amazing recruiter.

There's been whispers for quite some time that the Armsteads are not happy with Lane Kiffin. But I always kept in mind that those could be b.s. rumors as many of those things turn out to be. And then the older Armstead, a USC D-lineman, had some sort of condition that prevented him from playing this spring. Well, apparently they can't figure out what is wrong with him, and the doctors still won't clear him. Every day, reporters ask about Armstead (as stud), and Lane keeps saying there is no new news on him.

So yesterday, Lane finally came out and said that he will redshirt this year, as he hasn't been cleared by the doctors. Now, he could stay and hope to play next year, he could transfer, or he could turn pro after the year. He hasn't ruled out turning pro.

What does this have to do with Arik? Well, there are whispers once again that the Armsteads are not happy with USC. And as this is going on, suddenly the Cal mod writes an article saying that Cal leads for Arik. Hmmmmm. Now, I have never thought that Arik was coming to ND, and I still don't (even if he does visit). Never got that vibe from him, even though he tells ND reporters that his interest is sincere (hope I'm wrong). But if he doesn't go to USC, it'll be a nice consolation prize!

His brother seemed very upset and said that he had been cleared by other doctors not affiliated with SC to play and he didn't understand why they wouldn't clear him. This definately adds an interesting twist NDinLA...

I would think (without doing any research) that it was his brother. His brother was thinking about going with him to Bama this weekend with Arik (instead of going to his own school's game at ASU). It's being rumored that his older brother could join him in Bama for one season together. There's no way he'd be allowed to do that as a member of another school's team, even if he did pay his own way. I just can't see a school allowing that to happen.

But again, I haven't looked into this at all since I saw your post.

Will be at the USC game. (This may be old news)

Will be at Bama for the LSU game, where I expect him to commit to the Tide. Just an educated hunch.

I highly doubt that. Basketball is a huge factor is his recruitment and ALA just plain sucks. So does ARK. If anything, ND and CAL would be most likely to flip him.

Lol oh yea? Can you please tell me how much better Cal's basketball program was compared to Alabama last year? Or even USC for that matter?

Arkansas just got a top recruiting class in hoops and Alabama was screwed by the selection committee this past year, they'll be hovering around the top 25 this coming year. Oh, and they both have legitimate coaches that can also legitimately recruit. I'd say if he truly wants to play football and basketball, then Arkansas or Alabama would be pretty good places to go. Their football is better than Cal and USC and their basketball is too.

Over the past five years, ARK and ALA both sucked. I can't name one player that has gotten drafted. Have they even won an NCAA game in the past decade? ALA did get snubbed by Georgia last year, but they still would probably have been one and done. USC made the tourney and played a team that eventually made the final four. Cal was pretty bad last year because they lost their best player, Randall who single handledly beat Louisville in the tourney two years ago.
